Didn’t expect Tsitsipas to fall apart mentally and physically in 5th set

He made a potentially career altering comeback. It was great to see.
But then he loses 6 games so quickly after being up 1-0 in fifth set, with all the momentum. Disappointing.
Novak is amazing no doubt. If he beats Rafa, he could legitimately claim equal status to the top 2 because of winning 2 or more of each major and 2 or more of all the Masters.

i think he’d be equal to Nadal career wise in greatness and very, very close to Fed.

It's because of Novak's mental strength. It's unreal. His opponents usually don't have the courage to fight Novak when the Serbian is on FIRE. It's an impossible task.
Titspas was more mentally down than physically.

No excuses ... 33 year old Djokovic is in better physical shape than a young 22 year old ...

Hit the gym Stefanos, not Instagram ... work with nutritionists, trainers, PT's, fitness coaches ... expand your team, make the presence of your father smaller ...

Still plenty of time for Stefanos but hopefully he learned from this a lot !

Trust me, he did. He wants this.

He was injured.
From the Tsitsipas presser: "Unfortunately towards the end of the match an injury that I had during my match in Rome came back. It was difficult to close the match in a fighting way, in a fighting spirit".
Did they explain what injury?

The physio came out to work on Thiem's knee. Rest assured it was real, and he didn't fake it!

Even w/o injury, it was kind of expected. TC put up the 5-set match stats: now it's Djokovic 33-10 (.767), Tsisipas 2-4 (.333).

They also said Djokovic has: lost only one match after winning the first 2 sets (to Melzer); and has never lost in Majors after holding match point.

"Injury" often happens because lack of fitness or mental preparation ...

Stefanos is very fit but to get to that next level ... he has to find his "next level' where his body would not react adversely to the extreme and grueling 5 hour tennis match ... and expanding his team with experts will help ... Mouratoglou presence in his box is a good sign ... I know he trains there (Nice) but it is time to get his "team together" ...

"mental preparation/strength" is another aspect ... once your body start breaking down it is your mind that has to suppress those nagging aches and pains ... or if your mind focuses on those ... they start getting worse and starts resembling real injury ... "play through the pain" ...

He is getting closer and closer and I am happy to watch him ascending to the top ... not there yet !

I knew it,,, if it wasn't for the injury, stepanoe would have blown away novak in the 5th set. RAFA got this weakling gluten free man in the final now

He was not moving his legs at all towards the end. It was obvious he was in physical discomfort.

Why didn't he call a injury timeout and get off the court for extended injury treatment..... It would have been worth it,,, instead novak just ran away with it like freight train

During a full tennis season, I don't think anyone is truly 100%. So whether it's the neck niggles or groin issues, I tend to believe the players.

LOL,,,,,,,,,,,,, This was nothing but full season... very very short Covid season actually.

To my eyes, Tsitsipas looks like the most promising "young" player ...

Fantastic "Covid affected" season, he will get better and I am 100% seeing Tsitsipas as my favorite player once the Big 3 are gone.

Hopefully he hangs with the right crowd ... Stay away from the other "Greek" !!! (Australian/Malasian Greek)

Didn’t see this. Thanks. That makes more sense

Maybe he really could have won this match if he’d brought more maturity and confidence to the early sets.

Peak age for endurance is more in the 25-35 age range, he will improve in this regard.
Agree,

but also he better start winning before 25 or else ... he will become another Thiem ! Winning first major at the tender age of 27 !?

All he needed in this match to win was stronger box ...

Are there any other “Russian/Greek” Greek he can hang out with? How about the ones from (edited) Cyprus?

My bad ... very bad ... I did not mean anything bad by saying "Australian/Malasian Greek" ...

I meant to say - stay away from scumbag Nick Kyrgios !

Seems like you've done quite the 180 on the next gen potential front. Weren't you one of the few defenders about 6 months to a year ago?

Six months to a year ago? Try 3 years. I had said 2018 would be the official breakout year for the NextGens.

But hell, after a while you simply lose hope. Even with these conditions, they couldn't prevent another Nadalovic final? Heavens.

Who would be a good coach for Tsitsipas ?

I wish another Greek great decides to give it a go coaching ... Sampras

Say what you want but having the right coach at the right moment can bring you over the top ...

Time to go shopping ...

I agree.
It was disappointing to see that his physical condition did not give for more at the beginning of the fifth set.

And we are talking about a tennis player who has completed less than two months ago, 22 years, the beginning of his prime.

He reached the semifinals with a slight amount of minutes less than that of his opponent, who in addition to being more than 11 years older than the Greek, has played more matches in the last 2 and a half months.

The match did not arrive at 4 hours of play but Tsitsipas could not continue competing at the required level in this instance.

It is a wake-up call for young tennis players of this generation that winning Grand Slam tournaments requires impeccable physical condition, which is not the case with Stefanos today.
