what if fed just switched to doubles, say with stan for example or maybe a more seasoned doubles guy?

you have to admit that he's probably made all the dent that he's going to in the singles arena, but he could likely clean up on the doubles circuit for years to come, allowing him to keep doing what he loves and keep padding it out as well

haters will say that doubles achievements don't count and the phrase "singles GOAT" would enter common usage on here I'm sure, but tennis is tennis and real heads know that mac and laver etc. were doubles gods and so are pretty underrated compared to the modern top players who barely ever play anything other than singles and even sometimes have losing records in doubles

most importantly, fed is the shot in the arm that doubles sorely needs

thoughts?

I like it.

While I don't necessarily think he's done doing singles damage (250 up, boss!), I don't see the harm in keeping active in that way.

Pandemic isn't going away tho, so it's all kind of a weird abstract thought experiment right now.

i was thinking the other day, imagine if Corona Extra™ had hit back when the tennis was good and we were really in the thick of it e.g. 2012 rather than now? at least it hit when things were boring anyway

'Rona did the chasing pack a solid with the timing. The asterisks are biologically outsourced! :D

Indeed, though in a twist of irony Novack getting it himself might have actually stuffed him. Remains to be seen
True enough.

At least he wasn't selfish about it though. Generously provided other stars of the Tour with the opportunity to ride the Tilt-a-Whirl themselves!

And paid 'em handsomely for the privilege!

We've had threads like this before. Roger's been emphatic for years he will not continue his tennis career in doubles.

"From my end, I have no interest or plans to play doubles after I retire. Maybe when I'm over 50 with my grown kids, I don't know. But professionally? No."

Yeah yeah gotta spoil it for us :p
Yeah no way does he actually do that but it's more of a "what if"

It's like saying "what if Rafa wins RG in 2086?" I guess I don't get the point of hypotheticals which are impossible or already have been answered by the subject of the hypothetical. He's not playing doubles when he retires, so there's no "what if?" Fed's already slammed that door shut multiple times.

Not if he wins RG in 2086, but when*

The what-if here is that basically nothing changes. Fed fans will get to enjoy watching him play for a few extra years, but in terms of legacy it does nothing for him. Rafa & Novak fans would be correct to not let Fed fans pretend like his doubles accomplishments are now part of the GOAT debate.

I suppose it's something Fraud could consider if his major records at Dubai/Halle/Basel/Cincy were ever broken, but I doubt that will happen any time soon.

just not enough reward to fit it into his schedule, the guy has so much going on. although yes he'd be the best doubles player in the world, at least for a year or two until age really starts to creep in.

it's been mentioned a bunch of times but in all honesty i'd watch a federer/nadal doubles matchup anytime, anywhere. nadal also extremely effective doubles player. they would clean up and it would be a lot of fun. also, never gonna happen.
