Good LORD are commentators annoying...

I'm sitting trying to watch the Nole-Zverev match right?

Literally every other point that guy with the buzzy, Mosquito-like voice is going, "ohhhhhhhhhh...UNBELIEVABLE" every time Zverev manages to hit an overhead any top 50 player should manage, or Nole hits a routine drop-shot he pulls off every match at will, "TENNIS FROM ANOTHER DIE-MENTION!!!!!"

I've read Troll-posts on this forum with more insight than these clowns offer. Is being punchable, easily amused and exceeding 1000 dB on your commentary the only requirement for being a sports broadcaster these days?

There is this one commentator who literally whispers instead of saying out things aloud. Is he on the payroll like others?
I assume so. Passion is out the window as a motivator, so it must be money. Which channel was he on (so I know to avoid)?

I usually have it turned down. Sometimes if you are lucky you get a no commentary option.
But I do always listen to the following:
1. Frew Mcmillan- the king.
2. Jo Durie. So knowledgeable and really appreciates the game in an understated way.
3. Virginia Wade. Insightful and shady.
4. Nick Lester. Of the Petchy/Koenig crowd, he keeps fairly calm and focuses on the essentials. He's my least favorite on the list as he can slip into hype.
5. John Milman- I think it's nice to hear a current player talking about the game.
6. Boris Becker. Speaks his mind and is such a champ, I respect him.
7. Chris Bradnam. I like him most of the time. He's kept in check by the better commentator he works with.
8. Mary Jo Fernandez. I liked her as a player and like hearing her views.
9. Lindsay Davenport. Much like Fernandez, I just like hearing her take. TBH, you could put Pierce, Bartoli, here. I'll enjoy listening to them.
10. David Mercer. RIP. Icon.

I started and ended with the best.

Yeah true! I was referring more to his ridiculous phrases he comes out with.
"TENNIS FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION" after Nole hits a great drop-shot. He does that every match, every set he plays smdh.

There was one rally where Nole pulled Zverev out wide on the forehand, and Zverev surprised us all by hitting a great running forehand winner down the line to Nole's backhand, which Nole covered and returned with a slice to Zverev's backhand. The slice was a winner, granted, but only because Zverev stood still and decided not to run after it, and this guy is like wetting himself. I'm like, "bro...do you even tennis?"

Refreshing, funny and insightful. Some players make great commentators. Still remember that match between A-Rod and Fed in the Open quarters where Andre was commenting and it was so insightful, down to the mechanics of what makes for a strong two-hander. He also made fun of Mac's serve speed (to his face) which made for extra amusement.

Tweetle-dee and Tweetle-dumb. Pat McEnroe is so judgmental and boring (terrible combo). I remember that awful match at the Open a few years back where he kept degrading Donald Young, who I think had recently left his "academy".
Patrick "Oh, HELLO!" McEnroe

At least you don't have Eurosport's Serbs commentating...

The main Eurosport Serb commentator is a talkative racist who blathers during points and hates Nadal (even made anti-Spanish remarks during the 2013 FO SF), and just generally makes nasty comments about any player who dares beat or threaten Novak.

And the British Eurosport commentators... Utterly dull. The same two guys for several decades already.

Plus it always helps to have someone in the booth whose actually played the guys on court. It's better to hear Andre describe what it's like to face Fed & Andy than it is for 50 year old McEnroe to tell us how he thinks they should be playing.

Bradnam on Eurosport does this. He whispers "yeah" all the time and gasps during points

Yes, true. Andre especially since he's so modern and was one of the founders of the current baseline game, on both percentage aggression and fitness/stamina as well.

On the other hand, some of Mac's comments on the volleying ability of players even causes me trouble. But then again, he is one of the best volleyers in history, so what do I know?

Agassi is 50 and Mcenroe's are 54 and 62...

Robbie Koenig is the worst tennis commentator I've ever heard.

So annoying to listen.
Can't get his 'AWWWWWW YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDIN' ME!!!' yelling out of my head.

I could actually see him say his "comment" on the first point

They are, but the same is true of most sports if you're anything beyond the most casual sort of fan. Jim Courier is the only one I've heard a lot of in current times who I think tends to avoid that kind of absurd nonsense. I've heard good things about Todd Woodbridge too, but I've never had the pleasure.

I like Petchey's more analytical approach, but he still gets carried away too often and needs someone like a Courier to reel him in. They're awesome together.

Now, Pat Summerall and Tony Trabert. That was a dream team.

Russian commentators are hands down the worst.

They talk during the points, as if they are the stars of the show not the players. It's literally like a continuous dialogue between two or three idiots on Russian TV... No idea what they're saying but it can't be more interesting than the match...

By contrast, I think the Arabic speaking commentator who shouts as if every point is a celebration is awesome. Insightful? No clue, I don't speak the language, but his voice and joy make you enjoy even the dullest matches.

It's Channel 9. They are the NPC's channel of choice here in Aus, I am surprised they don't have gospel singing in the background, or express their commentary via interpretive dance. Everything is about "Eeeee-MO-tions" to them.

I wish you could pay for 3rd party commentary of your choice, like Roy & HG

The constant disrespect of Karatsev from the McEnroe bros was worse. Do yourself a favor and mute the TV.

"That's why this guy a challenger level guy" – McEnroe after he lost the first set to FAA
"That's why Karatsev in a 4rth round of a major!" – after he made 2:2 an hour later

American commentators are ignorant and disrespectful to MANY players, they do not even bother to pronounce their names correctly (it literally takes 10 seconds to acknowledge a pronunciation).

I give Johnny Mac a pass (much I like do Chrissie's incessant drivel) because he's an ATG. And I do think he's entertaining from time to time. But Patrick? He's SO smug and arrogant. He's total *********-iness is matched only by Chris Fowler.

I wish, wish Andre would commentate. He's knowledgable, funny, whip smart and articulate. Ditto Lyndsay Davenport. It'd be interesting to see if Venus goes that route in the future. Bet she'd be great at it.

Johnny Mac is so much easier to listen to on NBC than anybody on ESPN or Eurosports, the guy OP is referring to is ok but man he can get annoying. I watched the FO2020 final live on NBC and it was commentated by McEnroe and a few others, but he has such a clear idea of how to discuss the match in a way that isn’t annoying.

"He's as tough as a woodpeckers lips", that's a new one lol

One of the commentators then said 'Roger, smack him, would you?" Rasheed then replied "I've got him on mute" :-D

Robbie's just taking the **** at this stage

Everytime the big 3 are playing, these commentators end up kissing their ass all the time. When Novak was down a break in the first set, they were saying "is he having physical issues". Again in yesterday's match when Rafa was serving in lower speeds, they again were saying whther he has physical issues. I muted the TV after watching this post. Anyway the crowd wasn't there. So I wasn't missing the intensity. Also eff the fake crowd noise and the ads that follow in the changeover
