I’m on board with that more balanced and less whiny take on the issue
National Indoors unsurprisingly favors teams that routinely train in those conditions and you don’t hear much whining from the Gators when other teams raise that trophy
and yes it was fairly mild during the team event, especially with the night matches, and thank goodness the swarm of bugs from 2019 wasn’t back
then they lose if they don’t train at least part of the year in those conditions, knowing that at times they’ll have to compete in those conditions, fine with me, life is full of choices

i think football would be a better analogy than an indoor sport. Don't get me started on the pseudo sport of Golf. tennis players get enough grief anyway for playing a niche sport. this adds a additional element to a match which is great.

Paul Jubb from SC won it in 2019, the same year Tx won the team title, not 2020. There was no event in 2020. Jubb is from England. Jubb beat Borges (Miss St) for the title.

The UVA freshman Ema Navarro is good and fearless. She might beat the UNC Daavetila. Navarro is up 5-2 in the 3rd.

For what it's worth Liam Draxl, even though he is from Canada, trained at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel Florida in the latter part of his junior career.

Technically Jubb is the defending champion, which doesn't mean a lot in college. yes, i indicated that he was from England. The point is, you can't cry about the conditions. The humidity in College station is 58 compared to 38 in Orlando.

Would you take a player that is better indoors/ mid-season compared to a player that can hold up better in the humidity/ heat in the SF/ QF of NCAAs?
Typically holding up in humidity/heat is simply accomplished by high fitness and heat acclimation.

This was a great chance to promote college tennis more with these finals. Because usually they go up against the start of the French open so the attention of tennis fans is elsewhere.
how many players have won NCAA singles in recent memory that weren’t #1 slot during dual season - I remember Benjamin Becker for Baylor, and Ole Miss freshman wasn’t #1, right? Any others on the list that Riffice might join at the end of this next set?

Kwiatkowski wasn’t #1 for Virginia the year he won it. He has played #1 during the season but at the end of the year he was #2.

That UVA freshman Ema Navarro is like Stan Wawrinska. She took out the #1 seed Senior UNC Daavetila yesterday and #2 seed from Miami for the women single championship. For a freshman, that's unbelievable. Go Cavaliers.

She's pretty much a pro. Hard to see her coming back next year.

Highly unlikely, Paul Jubb who won the NCAA in 2019 is currently ranked 446th. Nuno Borges is currently 275th. Don't think Rodrigues and Riffice are better than Jubb or Borges.
Pro rankings are a mess right now due to the Covid exceptions or whatever they've done to them. There's guys who haven't played or won a pro match in 18 months or so still ranked. Saw a post recently (not sure of the accuracy) that you'd have to win 13 Futures titles now to get ranked high enough just to get close to being able to enter Challenger qualies. Needs to be fixed soon.
BTW. I think Jubb just won a Futures.

Interesting gentlemen, I don't really follow the college game. yes, the ranking are mess but they did the best the could do under the circumstances. Korda was 225 when Covid started. If you win, everything will take care of itself. the 2019 results should be coming off soon I think. I think the top 100 players have benefitted. based upon the past champions, winning the title is not an indicator of success in the pros. Mcdonald is probably the best of the bunch in last five years or so.

Borges and Riffice will be top-100 in time. Jubb is good but not as confident on him. Rodrigues I haven't seen too much.

Aren't most of the locations hot and humid (though maybe not this much) - College Station, Athens, Tulsa, Waco, Winson-Salem. Stanford is obviously the outlier. Champaign, Illinois too - I mean it can be "hot" and humid in May - though it's a whole lower level of hot and humid. Plus, there's the opposite problem - today it's 50 and rainy in Champaign.

No doubt it can get hot anywhere in May, but the statistical likelihood of serious heat and humidity is much higher at a place like Lake Nona. I'm not pulling out an almanac but I did attend the last NCAA tournaments in Athens and Winston-Salem and in both cases it was perfectly pleasant to sit in direct sunlight and watch tennis. In Athens I recall running back to my car to get a hoody while watching a 9 AM match. Lake Nona wasn't even that bad this year compared to last time, but the best seats largely went unused. That's because most people (myself included) crammed under the shade structures up on the breezeway. I grew up in Central Florida and played my tennis down there, but Lake Nona (or anywhere in TX) wouldn't be my first choice for staging a hard court tournament in late May.
Referencing former college players now in the pros, what has happened to your fellow Ohio State alum JJ Wolf? I enjoyed watching him play in the US open last year but it looks like he hasn't played since November. I miss the mullet. Speaking of former recent college players, Baylor's Jenson Brooksby plays the Lion, Aslan Karatsev in the French open tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how he holds up against a top 25 player. Brooksby will be ranked in the top 100 soon.
wolf had some kind of abdominal surgery months ago, he posted images with what looked like laparoscopy scars, I have no idea on the details - think he’s rehabbing and on the way back, but he clearly lost a lot of momentum in his climb up the rankings
