I completely agree. A tennis player who has just won the first 3 slams of the year for the first time in 40 years should not feel good about himself at all. In fact he should kneel down and praise Rafa and Roger as they are not here to vulture this weak era. Sound fair?

Absolutely. It is also the first time I call him the GOAT. He ties the GS titles and wins all top tiebreakers. Nadal has a chance to claim the GOAT for the first time if he wins USO. Federer is unlikely to reclaim it.

It’s funny, of everyone in the world I have the least issue with Novak himself believing he is the GOAT. The rest of us can debate weak eras and poly and surface homogenization, but the guy has dedicated his life to the sport since he was 5.
He has shown up and had to deal with the most pressure in tennis history and also beat the 2 greatest players ever in numerous Slam matches. And he has only himself to rely on in these moments, every single time.
I say let him believe whatever he wants. Same goes for Roger and Rafa. They deserve it for their ridiculous achievements. Let the fans debate hypotheticals, you’ll never convince a pro athlete that his titles mean less.

At that level, you better believe that you are the best. I am not a fan of Novak. But his belief of being the best(or even best ever) is nothing that we can hold against somebody at this level. Nadal and Federer likely believe it too. And if they don’t, then maybe that’s why Djoker caught them(at least caught them).

I believe that he wanted to say that he thinks he is the best in terms of best version of himself and that he believes in himself otherwise he won’t be talking about winning slams. About the GOAT he certainly want to be considered as (same as Rafa or Roger), but he said that he is honored of being part of that conversation. He has the edge in the GOAT statistics now and rightfully so, but the race is not finished yet.

I can respect that view, it’s clear that this doesn’t come from a place of bitterness as a Roger or Rafa fan but a place of love. Is your name Pepe Imaz by any chance?
I know a few pro athletes and they all say that mentally you must convince yourself you are the best, to win. For example, if Rafa truly felt Roger was the real GOAT he wouldn’t have hit to his BH so much. You do what you have to do to win, above all other costs. These guys have to have the utmost confidence in themselves to believe they will win. So, when a top athlete says that he believes he is the best, it’s the honest truth of how they actually think. In truth, Roger and Rafa 100% believed the same thing, whether they verbalize it or not is not the point.

Different eras my friend. Pretty much impossible to compare pre poly to post poly era especially with all the court changes. I don’t think you can reasonably compare Fed to Sampras but it makes sense to put them in the same tier as dominators of a certain decade 90/00s respectively
