In earnest, one could see that Murray would lose this, even before he stepped on the court. Eurosport showed, how they entered the players tunnel from the locker room in the arena, and had a short interview there. Wile Djoker looked very dynamic and confident, Murray was nervous like hell. His whole outlook and body language signaled, that he felt uncomfortly there. Like in last years final his first serve percentage went down from his normal 60s to the mid 40s percentages. The serve is the only stroke, on which the opponent has no influence.

That was a boring servefest at the end. Nadal–Tsonga AO '08 and Nadal–Verdasco AO '09 were better.
You're probably right but I'm talking about the most recent great matches. But if we go off of what you're saying then its been 2 years since there has been a epic match.

Why is it that fed fans say any final without fed is boring if cannot appreciate good clean baseline tennis then watch matches from the eighties on youtube

All credit to Djokovic though. He played very very good and rightfully destroyed Murray, who brought nothing but trash to the final.

You call a short 3 setter with 79 unforced errors a clean baseline tennis match?

It was a crap match. Low quality.

Dindt you the rally with 38 shots in the first set was that CRAP?? there was some great rallies out there stop being jealous cos djoker destroyed fed in straight sets. I bet you think the us open 2010 final was bad too.

I don't like Federer. I like Djokovic more than Federer (I am a Nadal fan).

I thought the US Open final was great.

It was something like 94 winners and 78 UE in 4 sets. + 16

This match was 47 winners and 79 UE in 3 sets. It's - 32

The USO final was a great match. The match today was crap and boring.

I did see the point you are talking about and it was great, but it is an exception.

Nad/Berdych deserves a special mention, but yes. Poor final. Wimbo 2002 levels of excitement.

LOL the two matches shouldn't be compared. USO 2010 is in a whole other class. I am a Novak fan but today's match was Muzza mugging it up and Novak being solid but not amazing like in his match with Roger.

There were some who claimed Novak was tired or that he played bad but he saved the majority of 26 BP's that he had against him. He was rock solid in most of those moments.

I thought both men played great. Some people underrate it cause it wasn't Fedal but I liked it:

Can Nadal fans not be Federer fans now? Do we have to pick just one?

This was perhaps a dull match to some. but for myself i have come to expect that in a final, seems to me the semi finals are always the best matches. Especially when we have become accustomed to either Nadal or Federer in the final. Would take some exceptional play and the right matchup to equal their performance.

Novak's level was so much above Murray's that he had control the whole match, so no, not the best final. But don't blame Novak, he was just too good.

I am not blaming Djokovic, that's why I just said "I am not sure I want Murray in another finale".

Djokovic was not special today, he was average, but that's because he was not pushed. I am sure he had plenty great shot in reserve in case the match would have been close. But he did not need to use it.

It was a very easy win for Djokovic who did just enough to beat an horrible Murray.

who made a mistake slowing even more this year? its the same surface as last year

All the players said it was playing slower than last year, all the major hardcourts are resurfaced yearly, here is an article detailing the process from the company who did the work: http://www.forconstructionpros.com/...ennis-court-construction-Down-Under/3FCP10267

I thought it was obvious watching play, 30-40 stroke rallys, players going for lines to get a ball by someone.

Courts playing this dead equals high unforced errors and low winner counts across the board.

These courts did play very slow.

About the court speed, weather probably had a little something to do with it, Courier also said the balls were heavier this year. In the end the courts did seem very slow, I'd go as far as to say this was the slowest AO I have seen.

I'm glad we didn't have a champion named Federer or Nadal! (not hating on them, it's just nice to see someone else win).

He made more errors than winners. That's not "great".

I don't know which match you were watching. The conditions were pretty slow - that is what led to the W/UE count being negative . Djoker played very well .

As a matter of fact, I want to check what was the break percentage this year at the AO, compare it with the previous years at the AO and perhaps even @ RG !

jman

Semi-Pro
The USO 2004 final and the RG 2008 final were not close, but you were watching greatness from one player.

This match was just plain bad. Worst than Federer/Soderling.

Djokovic was very average and did a lot of UE, lost his serve when he was in control.

But Murray was truely awful. 47 UE for 21 winners. That's unbelievable bad for someone like him who hit not a lot of errors usually.

He choked big time once again.

I was very excited before the match up. Now I hardly want the two to be matched up again in the future. And I am not sure I want Murray to be in another GS final.

Agree with OP, except for the quote Djokovic playing 'average'. He played EXCEPTIONAL! He was in God-Mode. He played to win, whereas Murray played not-to-lose.

Feelin for Murray =(, he really needed this win.

Murray disappointed in a Slam final once again. But how can someone who watched the match say that Djokovic didn't play so well?
He didn't play so well. There you go.

Djoker was of course good enough, in fact he was good enough to at least to double-breadstick Murray if not bagel him. He probably felt sorry for him. I find that unsportsmanly to hand out mercy like as if you are mother Theresa or something.

Especially in the late stages of the second set Djoker clearly took it down a notch or two. By the third set Djoko was so nonchalant that Murray was back into the foray WITHOUT actually playing better than before, so then suddenly Djoko put on the squeeze on him again and the Scot was toast.

At times it looked almost like a training session rather than a grand slam final.

Easily the worst final in at least half a decade.

It was hard to watch, thats for sure.

Its never entertaining to watch a match where one player is clearly so nervous and tense and is choking in front of our eyes while the other player just keeps the ball in play and wins easily.

The semis were so much better than the final

Wimby '10 Nadal-Berdych was worse.

Had to actually turn that one off mid match.

The Nadal-Berdych final was worse than this match? Totally wrong.

Nadal had 29 winners and 21 unforced errors
Berdych had 27 winners and 17 unforced errors

56 winners, 38 unforced errors

Djokovic 26 winners and 33 unforced errors
Murray 21 winners and 46 unforced errors

47 winners, 79 unforced errors

The quality of play was much higher in Nadal-Berdych last year.

Well it was no Nadal v. Federer 09, but I voted decent. In hindsight, one can say it sucked and Murray played like ****, but while watching there was at least some sense of Murray having the possiblity of turning the match around. He did break Djokovic several times and there a bunch of long, multiple deuce games. So overall, decent i say. Happy for Djokovic too!

I seriously don't know what eye problems have the people who voted "decent"

so you voted with your eyesight? like some here, i voted based on what my brain processed given the level of play Nole gave during the match. Use your brain, not your eyes, as your eyes can fool you.

Nole did his part. All of you who think the final was bad should talk to Andy. Dodig played better and took a set off Novak. Andy played so bad and showed no will and effort to win the title...
I agree. Murray was awful. Djoker was not challenged to do much, so he played well enough to win.

Hardly anyone on here is willing to accept other opinions.

Unfortunately, when someone disagrees, the response is usually "eye problems," or the person is "clueless," or "knows nothing about tennis, or "crazy," or a moronic 3-year-old.

You're pulling crap out of your ass. Generalizations never work in an argument's favor. And people are being too judgmental about this match. I personally thought it was a decent match, worth staying up at 4am to watch? Probably not but by no means the worst slam final in recent years. There was clean hitting from both guys and some good rallies. Murray just wasn't there mentally

And for people who were suggesting the FO 08' final was better because Nadal was dominating, of course if you play bad enough its easy to make your opponent look good. Fed played complete and utter trash that match but Nadal's solid form that tournament made it look even worse.

Yeah hopefully Murray never makes another slam final. If he does make another slam final though I will always put alot of money on him losing, and if he playing anyone in the top 5 put a fortune on it. Easy money.

Out of curiosity, exactly how much would you be putting on?
Wouldn't you want to do some research into Andy Murray before putting your life savings on it.
Would you seriously bet against a man who's made 3 slam finals, been number 2,3 and 4 in the world over the past two years, has a winning record over Federer, beaten on form Nadal twice, Delpotro and Cillic in slams, reached Wimbledon semi final twice, won 6 Masters Shields, beaten Federer in two Masters finals, beaten Djokovic in two Masters finals...
Are you seriously telling me you would place your life savings against a man like this?!
I'll bet my life savings you are talking BS.
