Lets talk about the US open!

I feel like there hasnt been enough talk about the upcoming USO. This is the most exciting slam, ever. The slam that will decide and end the GOAT/BOAT debate. We have 3 active players tied on the slam leaderboard heading into the last slam of the year. This is totally unprecendented.

On top of all that we have novak attempting to complete the CYGS, a feat not achieved since 1969 by the great Laver. Now i realise that some fedal fans may not be quite as excited as they should given the year novaks had but regardless, we will never be in a situation like this again so lets enjoy it!

Hows everyone feeling? What is everyones prediction? How will the new surface affect play?

I'm super - excited! :giggle:

It will end the debate if Nole wins, reaching CYGS - making him undisputable GOAT forever.

If Nadal wins - it's a tie and the race is still on.

Fed has no chance, to be realistic.

Anybody else - Novak keeps GOATing. :giggle:

I think people are edgy because it's not yet clear how many of the Big 3 will be at the Open.

Right now Nadal leads GOAT debate by virtue of Olympic Gold so if Djokovic and Federer do not win then no matter what he does its all good.
Then again Nadal is going for a tied record 5th US open which would mean he holds record along with Federer for most Majors at 2 slams.
So if Nadal and Djokovic do not win, all good for Federer.
For Djokovic it is win or bust. Looking at his devastated reaction at the Olympics he knows as of now he will be below Fedal on the leaderboard so he must somehow have one final push.
It is going to be fascinating.
I really didn't want this to turn into a goat debate thread...

If he does not win the US Open the season will be a massive anti climax. 3 slam seasons have happened a few times.
Having a player going for the Grand Slam is an incredible climax to the season. Even if he fails there will be nothing anti-climactic about it. It will have been a marvellous ride.

Djoker has more advantages on its side - NCYGS, DCGS, 5 YEC titles (while Rafa have 0), more YE1 and weeks at No. 1, H2H against Rafa and Roger, 2 Grand Slam tournaments with at least 6 titles (AO & Wimbledon). Nole is the current leader of the GOAT debate, put up with it.

I'm excited. Two editions of USO points to roll off, it should be a very enlightening tournament for the post covid rankings. And 20-20-20...need anyone say more?

Imagine if all 3 pulled out injured LOL

Leaves an exciting slam for the rest, with a new winner being crowned.

I get no OG is frustrating but by Djokovic own admission he needed it. So i am unclear about the debate. Only people who do not follow sport would think the Olympics are not massive. If in doubt see the celebrations in Brazil right now over soccer. And soccer is not even full international teams.
Djokovic had his chance to be GOAT. He blew it. He has another shot in 3 weeks.
Djokovic has a shot in New York, but Nadal should be a massive favourite at his own pet slam. Also Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas are all in the mix. Should be interesting. So let's see what happens.

I’m pumped at the possibility of seeing a man finally win the calendar slam. Ideally its Rafa v Djoker in the final, but more realistically it’ll be a next gen final. Djoker is a little burnt out and the pressure on him is insane. He knows what this mean. It’ll finally put him clearly ahead of Fed/Rafa and a strong goat candidate. The 2 guys that will always be mentioned 1st will be Laver and Djokovic, the rest come after these 2. Nadal will struggle if a couple next gen push him to 5, like at AO.

There’s a reasonable chance the big 3 won’t win more slams after this yr, so Djoker v Nadal final to decide it would be awesome. And yes I think Rafa will have strong goat argument if he’s the only guy on 21. He’ll be goat at FO and equal open era USO goat too.

The slam that will decide and end the GOAT/BOAT debate.
How so? Is this the last slam that will be played in tennis? What if Zverev wins it? What if Nadal wins it and Djokovic wins AO and RG next year? What if Djokovic gets the CYGS but gets surpassed in slam count by Nadal?

Tsitispas will hate NY and is an early exit waiting to happen. Zverev i think could well win it. That Olympic Gold may be a massive catalyst. Medvedev needs momentum. If he wins one of m1000s in build up he has a good shot.
Nadal if fit will be a big threat. Djokovic if mentally recovered a big threat. Dark horse is Berretini. Italy seems to be having a massive sporting summer.
Yes pretty much spot on. I agree. There isn't a clear cut favourite as of now, basically 4 or 5 guys all in the mix, with Djokovic playing with tons of pressure on his back. Let's see what happens.

Ill take the opinion of the pros. Beijing 2008 now looks colossal. Opelka the latest to comply.

LOL.

The Olympic gold winner, Zverev, say Djokovic is the GOAT.
Zverev>Opelka. Rafa was Opelka's childhood hero, dressed like him for Halloween, the reason he said that.

In all other stats, Djokovic is by far the best.
Weeks number one, H2H, all 1000 twice, NCYGS, DCGS, etc.

Nadal - 0 YEC.
Clay specialist only.
You cannot argue with numbers sorry, learn to accept it and go on.

Can't touch Novak.

Not the view of the professionals. And if you offer any sportsman a choice of career Nadal or Djokovic 20 Majors plus two OG or 20 Majors 0 OG every single sportsman goes for 20 plus 2.
Professionals? No way, in the fact, many professional tennis players have missed the Olympics in the past because they didn't consider it such an important event. An example from the present is Thiem.

0 YEC titles is a bigger hole in a tennis player's resume than 0 gold medals from the Olympics.

This is a very interesting question. If this scenario comes true, there will definitely be a lot of thread and controversy around this topic.

My opinion is that CYGS is such a monumental achievement that tennis player X with 21 GS titles and CYGS is greater for me than tennis player Y with 24 GS titles without CYGS.

nadal does not lead the GOAT debate due to an olympic gold..an olympic gold isnt even a slam. It has no ranking points. It isnt an ATP tournament. Your statement is completely untrue. Nearly the vast majority of his slams are on 1 surface clay (13/20) Feds and Djokovic are more spread out through all 3 surfaces. Its difficult to justify Nadal being the GOAT if he's primarily a clay court specialist. His recent Slam head to head versus federer and djokovic is atrocious..

currently they are tied on 20 slams each, the olympic gold does not factor into the GOAT debate whatsoever. Its a tie currently is the true fact, but personally with nadal's form and federer's injuries, you'd have to give to djokovic to end the debate at some point within the next 12- 18 months.

Nope. Zverev qualified his comment and said Djokovic will win more to to become GOAT. Sorry but we are talking as of now.
Nadal is definitely GOAT as of now. The Golden Slam plus joint most Majors and a 20-11 h2h over his rivals at the Majors clearly gives him the edge. Hence the pros saying Nadal. Opelka Rublev sharapova and many others. Evert also slyly saying so on twitter.
4-3 and 2-1 open is massive bud! I agree bud!

Not according to the pros. Djokovic himself said Olympics bigger than Majors. As has Federer. Murray nadal zverev and many others.
This is fake news! Djoker said that the Olympics are his highest season goal next to grandslams, not above grandslams!

For all tennis players, grandslams are the biggest goal in a professional career. That is a very obvious thing. The tennis players, who in the past said the Olympics were bigger than the Majors, obviously meant the Olympics as a whole, not the Olympic tennis tournament.

Post No.1 - This slam won't decide nor will it end the debate. Djok is already the GOAT. If he wins he remains the GOAT. If Nadl wins the debate continues. Fedr won't win it because he won't even play it..

You think roger will pull out? Id be terribly disappointed.
Post No 2. You better start with your disappointment now. If Fedr (40) has a knee problem that problem won't go away in a couple of weeks. Whoever is counting on that is crazy. Even if Fedr plays at the USO (which I think he won't) all we need is Harris.

Djokovic is 3rd currently. Nadal is clearly GOAT for now as he has Golden Slam.
The pros all are saying so. Beijing 2008 semi final now looks massive.
Djokovic nor his team have said anything after Tokyo. That speaks volumes.
Back in 2010 or 2011 i remember Djokovic putting Nadal ahead of Federer because he had won all 4 Majors and the Olympics. I shall therefore take Djokovics recommendation on this issue. As of today Nadal the main man. Federer 2nd as he has got doubles at least.
When your New User status changes to something more substantial I will consider your opinion. Until then go back to your hole.

Maybe he is delaying announcing pulling out of the uso till the last minute. Bit of an anti climax if true.
