The most unpredicted US OPEN 2021 Woman's Final

It is just a mind-blowing scenario that unfolded right before our eyes this evening in US OPEN 2021. Both finalists were unknown to most fans.
I never heard their names.

This is direct quote from NY Times " Two teenage women who were barely known to anyone other than the most devout tennis fans before this U.S. Open will vie for the singles championship on Saturday in what has to be the most improbable match up for a Grand Slam final since the modern era of tennis began more than 50 years ago."

Kind of a spoiler thread here:
It has been quite the amazing run for both young women this past fortnight (and then some, for Emma). Taking down 6 seeds and other higher ranked players (who had vanquished Ash Barty, Karo Pliskova & Iga Swiatek).

I was marginally aware of Emma. She made a bit of a splash at Wimbledon where, as a top British jr, she had received a wild card and managed to make it to the fourth round. She started off this USO ranked at 150. Including the qualifying rounds, she has managed to play 9 rounds without dropping a single set. She has not even had to play a TB. A very dominant run where she's taken down 2 seeds as well as players who, themselves, toppled a couple of top players.

Leylah is someone who was a bit more or the radar since she's been in the top 80 for a bit. And she was chosen by Simona Halep 2 years ago to play doubles at the Canadian Open.


Her run hasn't been as dominant since she did lose 4 sets along the way. But those were all against seeded players. And 3 of those were players who were seeded in the top 5 = Osaka, Svitolina and Sabalenka. No one really expected her to get past 3-slammer, Kerber, either.

Two other teens, Gauff (17) & McNally (19), are into the SF round today. It's looking like the WTA next gen is in fine shape.

is this conspiracy in attempt to bring in teenagers into the final of us open and making it interesting,, whereas same old vet pros ? to get the ratings up and tennis more popular

You've seen right thru the WTA's nefarious plan

Perhaps you should enlist your services with Team Orange to reinstate the ousted one. Or resurrect the rogue publication formerly written by Jerry Fletcher, aka Mel Gibson, in 1997 (Conspiracy Theory).

The men's tour is the same thing now. A bunch of weak players randomly advancing.

Yes because we know the better player always wins the 5th set let alone the 5th set tiebreak.

Disagree. I've been watching tennis for some five decades now. A lack of a dominant player or two is not a sign of a weak field. In fact, it's just the opposite. It is a sign of how competitive the field is and how much depth there is. These WTA players would easily destroy more than 90% of the guys on the planet who play tennis. It is laughable when 4.5 /5.0 guys on TT claim that they could prevail over a top 200 WTA player

Djokovic will become the GOAT of goats if he wins this tournament and yes he will become the first one to achieve CYGS in Open era.
My guess is he will. I think Zverev was a tougher opponent than Medvedev for Djokovic.

That was truly astounding.

OTOH, Leylah had to get past the 2nd, 3rd & 5 the seeds as well as Angelique Kerber. Those previous four 3-set rounds, in a short period of time, no doubt took a bit of a toll on her in the 7th round. So, kudos to Leylah as well.

Both played really well. Emma had to qualify so played ten rounds.

No player male or female has ever come through as a qualifier in any Grand Slam. So made history.

And didn't drop a set.

Quite the accomplishment. She is, no doubt, the real deal and had already showed that she was a force to be reckoned with, at Wimbledon, after receiving a WC and getting to 4R before having to retire cuz of breathing difficulties

But my post was really about Leylah rather than Emma. Emma did play 10 rounds over the course of 3 weeks (20 days). But I was really looking at that last week leading up to the final the final (9/3 thru 9/9) where LF had a particularly arduous path to the final. She had to prevail over Osaka (3), Kerber, Svitolina (5) & Sabalenka (2). Those were all tough 3-set matches that likely took a toll on her. Not insurmountable but those previous 4 rounds represented a very challenging path to the final.

While Emma's matches in those previous rounds were lasting 60-90 minutes, the 3-setters that Leylah was dealing with were about an hour longer. No intent to diminish Emma's accomplishment. My post was about giving more credit to Leylah for toppling the top players and having a bit less left in the tank for the last round.

Despite this, she is winning more than 2/3 (67.2%) of her singles matches -- compared to 62% for Leylah. And she is currently in the WTA top 20 (live ranking) -- still higher than Emma, now #23, and Leylah at #28.

3.5% & 4.5% younger. This will reduce every year of course.

I don't have any recollection of that since I wasn't playing or competing in tennis or other sports until 20/21. But even in the 20s and late teens, players are not truly invincible -- even tho they may feel that they are. Mentally & physically, those previous 4 battle rounds had to have some measure of wear -- perhaps not huge but still some impact.

Not sure how meaningful those percentages are. For most players, there is usually a significant difference between 17 or 17.5 and 19 (or very nearly 19).

This year’s USO indeed had the most unpredicted women’s final.
To compensate that, it had the most predicted men’s final (normally means whenever the #1 and #2 seeds face each other) as well.
