Emma Raducanu News

what upsets me is that within the media's view in Britain players like Konta and Heather Watson will be forgotten,

That's fine. Konta has had years to post results. Let Emma now carry the torch.
Konta still has opportunity. Just win a major like Emma did.

I'm saying that she will almost certainly be a 1 slam wonder + she is lying in order to get a paycheck from sponsors. I'm not saying I don't like her.

Where did she lie?
She said it is an honor for her to wear Tiffany jewelry. And I believe her.
Same as it is an honor to get a Nobel Prize.

UK is where she resides. She holds Canadian citizenship by birth. She has not yet represented the UK in a competition.
Japan does not allow dual citizenship and Osaka had to renounce U.S. citizenship to play for Japan in Olympics. Not clear what the UK law is.

Looking at all these side deals she's making, it kind of feels inevitable somehow she'll go another 25 tournaments without winning one lol

Even if she never wins another slam though (I ultimately do believe she will win another), it's still a magical thing what she's done. To have a British player be the one to do it has really shaken up the sport over here. So many more people are now taking an interest.

British tennis was on the slide a bit before all this with Konta's injuries and Murray doing very little for years. This has been a MONUMENTAL boost.

Exactly why Murray is urging the LTA to take advantage of it and get young people interested in the sport. As for her side deals, it's not unexpected. It may be (hopefully it isn't) the biggest win of her career so there's no reason she shouldn't try to take advantage of it while she can.

She had that Wimbledon run. It was really hyped over there in London. But even with all that hype dont think anyone in the UK expected her to go deep in NYC. Although it was a bit disrespectful that NYC forced her to qualify after Wimbly run. But maybe that slight only toughened her resolve.
Don't think any qualifier has ever won a major. Male or female.

I get it. Totally. If it was me, I'd be signing that £20million watch deal asap lol. She might break her leg tomorrow crossing the road.

I just hope she turns out to be one of those that is never satisfied with what she's achieved (like Nadal), rather than someone who can never quite get the same motivation flowing again once the mansion has arrived.

She's a bright lass, and from the outside it appears that she's also well advised. I'm sure whatever happens she'll be ok. Tennis wise, my biggest concern for her is the UK media, they're scum. The Daily Fail has already searched for and found her Romanian grandmother for comment.

Emma is very marketable, she's very attractive and sorry to say objectification sells, I'm 14 years older than her and I'm into older Women anyway. Britain has a gem of a tennis player, what upsets me is that within the media's view in Britain players like Konta and Heather Watson will be forgotten, Konta held the torch of Woman's tennis for now at least 5 years.

Britain is not a great tennis nation for some reason, I think it's more to do with class issues that Tennis is seen as the sport for the "Upper crust" those who play water polo, inbreed and wear gold plated masks during Covid restrictions.

Football is the go to for our youngsters but I think more should be done to get the youngens into Tennis.

That's really nothing compared to canadians supporting Emma when they have Leylah. If you don't back your own you're basically a shallow traitor.

What Emma did was really special. Even Konta acknowledged this when she congratulated her. So she deserves the attention atm.

Indian Wells will likely be next, although to my knowledge they still haven't officially upgraded her to a main draw wildcard.

Maybe keeping her in the qualies (this time at least) is going to be their way of Tiger-proofing the draw kind of thing.

Qualies. o_O IW day 1 qualies schedule: 2021 USO champ v Jane Doe :-D

She’s the most talked about player in the world now. They’ll be lucky if they don’t have to slip her a very large under the table cash appearance fee in addition to obviously comping her travel/accommodations/meals and other de facto payments.

”Here’s your definitely not appearance $$$$$$. We all know the “rules“ so don’t tell anyone you got what is definitely not appearance money or you have to give it back. Also, you still have to play qualies. :p

LOL. they aren't going to make her qualify. US open win puts her in automatically into 1000 event.

i am not disputing the first part, cos no one knows, yet... but i have a query about the second part? can you share your thoughts about the "lying" bit, in order to get a pay check from sponsors? in addition to that, how do you think the "sponsorship" usually work in the really world? (genuine question)
Sponsorships work by you wearing/using their product, not speaking bad about the product and saying any "good" things you are told to say. You must have seen fitness people on instagram pretending that X clothing brand is so awesome for working out, or Y protein shake brand will give you huge muscle gains? Even though it's obvious marketing BS. But they say it for the paycheck. That's how sponsorships work.

Raducanu is saying it's an "honour" to wear the jewelry, not because she actually thinks that (seriously who in their right mind would voluntarily say it's an "honour" to wear a random piece of jewelry on their social media pages - use some common sense please!) but because she's been paid to say it.

so you obviously understand how "it" works. so if everyone is doing it.... what is your really issue then?

LOL. they aren't going to make her qualify. US open win puts her in automatically into 1000 event.

It would do under normal circumstances, but the Indian Wells entry list closed before the US Open happened. Hence why she's only in the qualifying draw.

I imagine they will absolutely upgrade her once she confirms she intends to play. She's leaving it as long as possible to do so, it seems.

really, that's your argument? "everyone does it so it's ok" anyway i'm done talking about this. i'm just amazed there are people gullible enough to think she wasn't getting paid to say this.

oh well..... as much as you like what you are saying..... when push comes to shove, let's say Hublot wants you and your best buddy to be their ambassadors (with hefty paycheck)... i am sure you'd be bending over backwards to say whatever they want you to say.... isnt that how sponsorship/endorsement work?

Wildcard can be used at any time. Murray is given wild card like its supermario brother video game in nintendo all the time.

Would not be surprised if she skips Indian Wells.
She had to play 10 matches in NYC. She might decide it's a good time for a break. Or play tournaments closer to home.

Why don't you tell your boy to endorse the racquet he actually plays with for starters rather than the paintjob he lies about?

When did she compete for Britain? Did she play in the Olympics?

Been part of Fed cup teams I think, or at least travelled with the team. She competes as British. You saw the flag pop up on the coverage in the final, yes? Considered the first British female slam winner since the 70’s? I mean, you have eyes right, you’ve seen all this??? If she didn’t consider herself British we’d know by now.

You’re getting a bit petty now, you need to accept that she’s British mate. Come on, you can do it! ;)

I bet this thread will not go over 100 replies. Raducanu will be a one slam wonder but every slam winner deserves its News thread.
Times running out to not get to 100.. shoulda known even a 1 slam wonder would get to 100 replies when that 1 slam was the first ever qualifier to win in either ATP or WTA.

It's pretty obvious she was told to say that by her sponsors. People will say a lot of nonsense they don't believe in to get a paycheck and I don't see a reason why Raducanu would be any different. The fact she said it is an "honour" sounds like the kind of fake, over the top garbage that sponsors get you to say. Who considers wearing an item of jewelry as an "honour"? lol

While I worry that too many sponsorship obligations will take away from Racucanu's tennis focus, it's pretty ridiculous to take this as some kind of affront even if she is being fake. Would you refuse to do that advertisement if you were offered a million dollars to do so? Would anyone in this forum?

Do these people take everyone for idiots? The nonsense that sponsored people come out with just because they're paid to say it lol.

This is just performative corporate/PR speak, though.

Just like being called a "valued customer" by a company that you do business with.

I doubt that most people would be influenced by these shenanigans, but I suspect that there are a minority who would be influenced by this.

No way she only wins one slam. She is a phenomenal player and still only 18. 10 matches won without dropping a set or even going to a tie break. She is the real deal.

So she only has 1 year contracts with Wilson and Nike,, 100,000 dollars per year. Now murray brands and Adidas want to take over by offering her millions

yeah. Her current contracts are on year by year basis with Wilson, Nike. So, she will probably get much bigger contracts (probably more 10x) when she renews it, especially with Nike. One of the British papers was reporting that her contract with Tiffany is somewhere in the range of 2-3 Million Euros per year

if she changes racket company to something like head or yonex, i wonder if it would cause problems for her ? i think she would be perfect for yonex but not sure if they can afford her ??

that definitely is a possibility...I have seen some players experiencing dip in their play for a while when they change rackets. That's why I am hoping she can stick with her current racket if she is comfortable with it instead of switching rackets for a better contract. She can easily make that money from the other sponsorships she is getting anyways

it's always been the case where they are making plenty of money from other contracts, but they always want more. If another company like Babolat offers her 10 year contract worth more than any other company can offer and this contract will stick even if she gets injured and has to take extended time off,,,, Then do you think she can refuse that ??? That's the kind of contract that babolat gave Rafa.
