Since no one else is stepping up to set up a thread...here we go. No doubt I will make a mess of it.
Who is going to win? Who are the quarter-finalists going to be?

Zverev the Saint actually sounds very good! I’ll use this nickname from here on out. Archangel Alexander, the Djokovic purifier.

I really should have put a bit more thought into his nickname. Shame on me!

Indeed, we just took on and beat the entire world didn't we? Hugs and kisses right back to you!

Not sure what happened to my response, so I'll try again...
Yup, we are taking on the world!

(So what happened to everyone else? Little Canada can't support this thread. We love all of you! ...well maybe not ALL of you. We are obediant in terms of masking and vaccinces here in Canada. So I understand that not all of you buy into our caring culture.)

Meanwhile, what's up with Raonic? He's ranked at 70 now due to that ongoing leg problem? He was in 18 events in 2021 - have you heard if he'll be returning at all to the big courts?

Raonic just finishing packing for Australia when he bent down to tie his shoelaces and pulled his groin muscles, then he got up to hop to the hospital and bumped his head on the door and suffered a severe concussion, then the ambulance workers accidently dropped him from the stretcher aggravating an old knee injury. When they finally got him to hospital he caught covid and then they accidently gave him anabolic steroids making him ineligible to play.

Imagine if FAA wins his first singles title here? Or someone like Hurkacz, Ruud or Shapo? So unlikely but I'd love to see it.
II have nothing against hyped players - they usually can't help that, but I'd like to see some hardworking career journeyman win. Someone considered negligible and dull, in the 40-100 ranking range. Without these workers to step on and over, the top ranked people wouldn't exist.

Like Thomas Johansson? :p

Is this a trick question?
It's AO. Novak Djokovic always wins.
Expect #21 slam, 10th AO and formal GOAT coronation soon.

You know what's obvious now? It's that Americans, and others, HATE people who aren't #1. Yet they will cheer for a football team of 30 people, as well as the top people of other teams. But for tennis, it can only be one person. It's embarrassing. What a messed up society. (That's not to say that other societies aren't messed up as well!)

Glad you're so confident.
So who are the quarter-finalists going to be?

I gave my predictions in another thread. But here they are again:

QF
Djokovic beats Nadal in 3
Titspas beats Rublev in 5
Medvedev beats Berrettinni in 4
Zverev beats Rudd in 5

SF

Djokovic beats Titspas in 4
Medvedev beats Zverev in 5

Final

Djokovic beats Medvedev in 3.

#21 and 10th historical AO for the world #1.

Well, I voted other because I’m not Canadian but I am a full-fledged Sinner.

I voted for other - I think you can guess who!!!!

So if Djokovic is deported (please let this happen) does someone take his place or does Kecmanovic move on to the second round automatically?

Here to repay the OP’s disrespect for the reigning Sydney champ and last year’s semi-finalist. The calves, the kinetic chain, the drive volleys, the 2HBH of doom and the OHBH of WTF. Mind you, I’d go broke trying to repay all the disrespect heaped on him.

The only acceptable alternative is Alcatraz coming like a truck tyre outta nowhere. Also in stock in my I’ll-allow-it department, absolute dominance from Zodvedev, crushing Djokodal in straights, with double faults permitted only if both serves are 200kph+.

I think it'll be a Zverev-Medvedev final, with Med taking the whole enchilada. Nadal's draw is looking worse every day. In form Kokkinakis, Karatsev, Hurcakz, and THEN Zverev? Not looking good for him.

Is this possible? Isn't Ruud in the opposite half from Zed?

QF:

Nadal (or Hurkacz or Karatsev or Kokkinakis) vs. Shapovalov
Alcaraz vs Djokovic (or Monfils)
Sinner vs Fritz
FAA vs Humbert

The draw is a massacre, and few of the usual suspects make it through....ready, set, action!

I am ready to accept lashings for this oversight! (figuratively or linguistically, not literally, of course)
Here's to Karatsev's calves!

I'm torn.
I'm glad the Fed/Nadal/Djoko warrior diehards aren't here, blasting everyone else out of the discussion. It gives us a chance to talk about other players.
But, where the heck is everyone else? aren't there broad tennis fans here? Was this forum always about those obsessive posters?
Let's discuss.

I've been around. It's been hard to get into tennis with the thing looming over the entire party. Medvedev wins, with or without Nole, is my final answer ;)

Medvedev, Zverev, and Nadal each have their chances.

Medvedev's probably the favorite of those three. Zverev would be a top contender in a best-of-three non-slam, but in slams he still hasn't figured out how to stay mentally strong, so he's more likely to lose in a SF or QF than to win the whole thing. And Nadal... well, can never count him out, but he's not won here in a really long time and is yet again coming back from injury. He'd need an easy draw to win, IMO.

Tsits is also coming back from injury.

So I think Med's got this one.

What matches are you looking forward to tomorrow/Monday?

Several interesting first round matches. Nice that ESPN+ has the early round coverage. I always enjoy being able to watch nearly every match of the first week. Korda v. Norrie, Demon v. the young Italian, Murray v. the Basher: just a few of the interesting matches coming...

Women's side will be quite interesting this year as well. Here's to hoping that Australia's home favorite doesn't disappoint.
