I am sincerely sorry for Djokovic and his fans.
I will still enjoy the AO, this is gonna be a great tournament with high suspense but I wished he was able to compete. Grand Slams are always more interesting when he is in the draw. Bold chance for Nadal this year even if I still put Zverev and Medevdev favorite over him.
I blame this mess only 10-15% on Djokovic (unless he fixed his Pcr test, but I DON'T believe it at all). I blame mostly Tennis Australia for their lack of communication and the Australian government for changing the rules at the last moment and for their political views. At the end of the day what Pospisil says is right, ND wouldn't have boarded the plane if they had not given him the greenlight and if he wasn't 100% sure he could compete. He would have stayed home with his family, wished everyone well and come back later.
This tweet sums it up perfectly : shorturl.at/josNW . He didn't break any rules to get in the country, he didn't "lie", there is no investigation against him in Spain, (IMO) never bribed the judge or changed his Pcr results or any of the tricks he's been accused, he had a valid medical exemption. He is out for political stuff because the government dislikes his opinion about covid. I put most of the blame on them and TA. Still, I don't think he's blamess here but he doesn't get the lion's share.
I hope you're right and this is just a blessing in disguise. He had a pretty tough draw tbh, with Zverev in his half once again. Better he gets deported now and gets to rest for the next few weeks and comes back stronger later... Better this than another loss against Zverev in SF due to mental exhaustion, which would have been way more humiliating IMO.
Hopefully this colossal mess will make him reconsider his views about vaccination (I don't agree with him about this) or at least question himself about his tennis career and his next goals.
Either he gets vaccinated (only fools never change their mind) or he makes it clear he'll never get vaccinated and completely revolutionizes his calendar. Only plays RG and Wimbledon (if he can) and plays more european 250 and 500... I think for Monte-Carlo and Belgrade it should be ok... Maybe to compensate IW/Miami he'll play Rotterdam and Dubaï/Acapulco... Maybe Lyon before RG, and could play a few 250/500 on clay. The next few weeks will be interesting. I hope he'll communicate soon.
