watch out for Super Mario Galaxy to make a run for game of the year in 07....and Super Smash Bros. Brawl to take it in 08'. Both very hyped games that actually WILL live up to the hype

Nintendo powah, they have a lot of good titles and features coming up in the near future

Wii tennis isn't 1:1. It's good social fun, but not something that you should think of as tennis training :p

punch: Oh yeah. Mario Galaxy is looking superb, and while I never got into the Smash Bros. games (I was PC only from a bit after goldeneye until the Wii), the game is shaping up to be enormous... Sonic? Create your own level? I'll probably take the plunge and pick it up.

As for GOTY? Mario has some heavy competition. The Orange Box is absolutely superb; Portal, while short, is one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. That doesn't include the concentrated crack that is TF2. Bioshock was an excellent game as well. Halo 3 could be in the running on name basis alone, but does not deserve to be when compared to these other games. I have been hearing of Mass Effect as well, so I suppose that's another contender if it turns out as well as people hope.

There is no way galaxy will win goty. Sorry, I just can't see a wii game winning it. I'll eat my mario hat if mario wins that award.

That being said, halo 3 is going to win even though it doesn't deserve a single damn award compared to the incredible year in games we had.

I hope Bioshock wins it over Halo 3 if it comes to that....but seriously SMG has a shot. I hear this Cyrsis game will be good as well.

It's too bad that Gamespot has to hate on the Wii on a regular basis...

I played through the Crysis demo on the highest settings and at a very nice resolutions. While the game is quite gorgeous, one gets the feeling of playing Far Cry, in a nanosuite, fighting aliens instead of monsters, with better graphics thrown in.

Don't get me wrong, many people, including myself, will enjoy this game. I just don't think its worthy of GOTY, considering the amazing competition. Perhaps the full game will prove me wrong, but this doesn't look probable.

I don't know anything about video games, but just wanted to mention that my co-worker (who browses the TW forums once in a while out of curiosity, without having TW account) is an EVERQUEST Pro. With thousands of hours of experience, he really takes the stuff seriously; there is not a single day that he hasn’t spent plotting the next organized crime raid…. And there is not a single night that he hasn't slain a dragon or a creature worth murdering.

I saw the Crysis trailer and it looked great, although the terrain looked pretty darn close to FarCry. To be honest, if the gameplay was similar to FC and the graphics and story was better I'd call that a darn good success since I really enjoyed FC.

I am looking forward to 2008 as Jagged Alliance 3 and Fallout 3 should be released and GTA4 as well. I have the Orange Box purchased and ready to go and figure that with the Hitman movie coming out this month there should be another installment of that series.

I think Mass Effect has a bigger chance than Bioshock does. Either way though it's a win for the 360. Has anyone played Assasin's Creed? That looks like a good game. Cyrisis is going to be a beast of a game, but you will need a beastly computer to run it.

Alright guys,

I need some help. I'm a dad. All I know about video games is that I used to be an awesome player at Defender back in College during the 80's.

I have two duaghters 14 and 11. They both got staraight A's in schools this term and I want to get them a surprise present. I thought I would get them a video game. They've never had one. But seem to like them when they go to their friends homes.

I've heard WIi is the "cool" thing at the moment, but most press I read says PS 3 is the best.

What should I get..

They won't be into violent games. I'm sure thay would like a tennis game , Mario type games. etc.

I could use some guidance on the best console and a couple of game suggestions.

BTW, The only place I can find that Wii is available is Amazon or ****, It that right?

Do a bit of research. I'll boil it down.

Buy the Wii if you enjoy: First party Nintendo games, a wider variety of family games, social games (multiplayer on the same TV)/gaming with your family or friends, Motion control, or old school games for NES, Genesis, SNES, N64, Neo-Geo or TG16 (may have missed one!).

Buy a 360 if you enjoy: The best graphics (Better than the Wii, but as a PC gamer, I still love the Wii's graphics, so unless you are a complete resolution *****, don't sweat it), online gaming, access to a larger library of games, "mature" (read: guns, blood, sexual innuendo, swearing, drugs and other adolescent facinations) games, Any of the 360 specific games (eg. Halo 3),

Buy a PS3 if you enjoy: Getting reamed by Sony. Just kidding :) Nearly identical hardware *performance* (Vastly different architectures, but implementations vary minutely, with 360 titles looking the best currently), Blu-Ray movies, PS3 exclusive titles, "mature" games, online gaming (not quite as good as the 360's though).

Honestly, unless you are a diehard fan of a specific PS3 exclusive title (there are NOT many right now, most of the big name ones have been delayed majorly), I *strongly* urge you to avoid it like ebola/the plague/other terrible diseases.

Reasons:
Price
Developers - Due to the low adoption rate of the PS3, many titles are going cross platform to the cheaper 360, and in many crossplatform titles, development of the 360 title gets more attention, due to the larger user base. This results in most games being available for the 360, and being better on the 360.

Given your situation, I would definately recommend the Wii. If you choose this route... Good luck finding one. They have been sold out since day one. Financial reports indicate that Nintendo is stockpiling a good number of Wii's for this holiday, so you may have better luck than everyone did last year. If not, I would recommend hitting up a small shop (I hate gamestop, but they might work here), ask when they typically get deliveries (specify the Wii if they get multiple ones), and call during this time once a day. My father (a non-gamer) picked one up the second day he tried this scheme.

On a side note, regarding the earlier GOTY discussion... http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/wii/supermariogalaxy

Friggen *97* with 14 ratings. Galaxies is officially a very serious GOTY candidate.

You could have built yourself a good system for that much money!

I didn't get this monitor in the end. Some reported problem with it. I will probably get the new acer 24in 2ms or Samsung 245BW. I heard 245B only have at most 8ms input lag and that's about the best among LCD.
Maybe I need suggestions...

...and who said I don't have a good system already? ;)

Is there any benefit for preordering PC games?

As far as I can tell PC games rarely sell out. If you get it through the internet you are not getting it on the day that is actually available, but 2-3 days later because of shipping.

I love Counterstrike. Wow, I spent more time playing this game than studying and attending classes in college combined...I'm sure. LOL. Don't play it as much anymore...just once in a while.

I am a fan of portable gaming (Nintendo DS!) PSP is ok i guess...
I have a modded DS...lol, can download any game for free..

I have a modded Xbox with a huge harddrive full of games, and

I am about to mod my Wii, which will let me download free games and burn them on DVD and they play perfectly. (my friend has one working already)..

I say no.

I only buy PC games online if they are cheaper and/or online only release and/or older, hard to find.

Sometimes the preorder either has a "gift" tee shirt, gift box or some other trivial junk of no value except to the diehard fan or it will have a slightly less than initial retail price. However, I am usually 2-3 games behind the ones I want to play when the next one comes out. I always can beat that price by the time I am ready to play the game, say 6 - 12 months after release.

I buy even later than this. I found the hardware can handle those games better (for example, Crysis now...)

And like you, I am many many games behind, some years and years...

OK, first off, skip the PS3, it's got no good games period, not to mention zero games they would be interested in. I'd look into a Wii, maybe, just maaaybe a 360, but most 360 games probably wouldn't interest them.

I'm looking forward to COD4 for sure. If anyone wants to play some Halo 1 I play a few nights a week on XBC my account is "BoKnows". I bought halo3 and think its pretty boring but if you want to play send me a friend request on my XBL account "SLOSRT4".

I've seen trailers for SMG, and I'm not really impressed. Is it seriously good enough to buy? I know all the reviews are bowing down to it, but Mario isn't my favorite franchise...

Well if you don't like Mario games, you probably won't like it.

But it will most likely be one of the greatest Wii games of the year, so if you have a Wii then it's worth it!

I know I will be getting it on Tuesday!

Oh and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is AWESOME!!!

Want to see whether corporate influence affects integrity in gaming journalism?

See if Super Mario Galaxy doesn't win the GOTY.

Absolutely *superb* game, if you enjoy games, and are not allergic to platformers of any type, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

good choice, i have only played oblivion from the elder scrolls though, are the others good?

mann..elder scrolls of oblivion was awesome, however i was doing nothing but playing it and it sorta consumed me for about a month straight (including no tennis), so i did the rightful thing, i sold my 360 on e bay. Playing elder scrolls was so good it was like a drug addiction. Finally i was back playing tennis again.

however...i might end up getting a 360 again if topspin 3 is any good, topspin 2 sucked, i liked (and still play) topspin 1, its the best tennis game still in my opinion, (even virtua tennis 3 for 360 sux because they dive for everything, totally unrealistic)

Did you read any crysis preview online? If I remember correct, even the GTX choke when running with high settings. You will have to wait for next-gen card probably.

I played it with my GTX.

W/ dx10 settings (very high hack) and decent resolution it was choppy. w/ high settings it was smoother, but if I jacked the resolution up to the highest... I've heard GTX in SLI (SLI is dumb.) doesn't even do full res/highest settings/highest image processing.

mucat: My guess is your trying to use too high of a resolution, and don't bother with higher AA either.

You probably did but have you tried gameFAQ?

Yeah, and the advice was like: "the hallway is full of ten elite troopers with heavy weapons, use grenades to take them out, there is a health powerup at the end of the corridor after you take out the troopers, next..."

I haven't been to gamespot for a long time, their web site become too commercialized. I was a long time reader (pre-cd-rom era...) of the computer gaming world mag (is it dead yet?), it used to be very good. Nowaday, I court on user reviews, they are the best.

Anyway, I was so ready to buy the AMD Phenom, because I already have a AM2 MB. However, I heard news that Gigabyte is NOT going to update the BIOS of some of their AM2 MB for the AMD Phenom, including mine. Crap, what the heck with the statement AMD Phenom should work with AM2 MB??? I don't know who should I blame (AMD or Gigabyte), but mine next upgrade will be neither AMD or Gigabyte...maybe I will upgrade my CPU to 6000+ for the last time though...

Replaying crysis and game looks much better now. 8800GT has a bloody noisy fan.

Who's played mario galaxy, it's getting good reviews. Should i buy it?

I got to build a system over christmas and I'm pretty pleased. I run bioshock on full at 1280x1024 no issues at all and I got some dip with crysis when I was on medium.

Bioshock PC is INCREDIBLE! It's like F.E.A.R., just hard.
