Animosity between Murray and Del Potro?

What happened during their match today to spark animosity? I heard the commentators discussing bad blood between the two toward the end of the match but didn't get to see what had caused it. Do these two have history?

Del Potro hit a ball on Murray and he did not apologize, Murray got pissed off and started to curse on him, got a warning.

Shoulder clash in the change sides...

Anyway, this was the first time they met.

Murray was caught cursing near the beginning of the match and was issued a warning. It's a bit sad that he would continue cursing like a brat.

If anybody noticed the break point during the 8th game in the 2nd set, JMDP hit a backhand that clipped the net and almost hit murray who was approaching the net.

I don't see what's the big deal with Murray making a big deal out of it, is that the way he behaves when things aren't going his way?

Del Potro should have apologized and Murray should have just let it go and stay focused.

I didn't see the match and am just judging by this.

It's on again right now. To add to everything already been said, Murray seems to be feeding Del Potro intentionally bad overheads during warmups.

On the last point, after a pretty good baseline exchange, Murray hit a drop shop, whereupon Del Potro tried to get to it and apparently pulled something in his lower back. Then he goes to his chair and calls for a trainer. Del Potro then starts to cry big time. Sobbing like a little girl. End of match. I have never seen a man cry like that before during a tennis match. Pretty pathetic.

If you knew what JMDP had been through the last few months because of his back, you might be a little bit more understanding. He's a very young player, and his back issues are a big concern for him right now (he might have come back too soon, just have to wait and see).

That's because you can't tear a back muscle sitting on your couch, drinking beer and eating chips like you are right now. If anything, your position is way more pathetic than Del Potro's. At least, he has a reason to cry, you can't injure yourself from your couch. Maybe dislocating your fingers using the remote control.

Federer cried because he won a title, Del Potro cried because he ****ed up his back. IMO, JMDP had a better reason to cry.

No need to get overexcited defending your countryman. I hate to say it, but Del Potro did cry like a little girl. I've experienced torn ligaments, muscle tissue, and a shattered ankle playing soccer a few years back. Was it painful, hell yes. But the pain was so great that there is not even a chance to shed a tear, because my brain was preoccupied with trying to stabilize my body.

I've also been hit by a car while on a bicycle. That hurt pretty bad, and I was lucky not to break anything. No need to shed any tears there as well.

I don't think source of Del Potro's crying is only physical. I think Andy Murray had something to do with it.

But why do you think it is "pathetic"? That is very harsh thing to say, when someone is hurt and crying.

I am sorry, but physical pain is not a good reason to cry like that. Especially if you are a grown man. Since Del Potro is a grown man, I don't think he is crying because of just the pain. Any grown man who cries like that is due to acute emotional distress. What's the cause of this distress? Here are some possible reasons:

- Upset for the way Murray has treated him during the match
- Upset at how the match turned against him
- Upset at how he had the bad luck to get injured during the match

Let's say that he is very upset about these things. He should not let Murray see him like this. I'm not a big fan of Andy Murray, and I would have liked Del Potro stand up to Murray.

Good for you tough guy, tell me, was your promising soccer/cycling career at risk from your injuries??

Believe me, Del P. isn't crying from the pain.

It doesn't matter what I think about Del Potro's crying, because I'm just a nobody. However it does matter what Andy Murray thinks, because they are opponents on the tour, and the fact that he's from the UK makes it worse. Did you see Andy Murray go and check to see if Del Potro was okay? Did Andy Murray even shake his end to end the match? Murray is a big time punk, so if you are playing a punk, you don't let him see yourself in any weak state whatsover. I understand why Del Potro cried, but I'll bet you that Andy Murray doesn't. That's why Del Potro should have tried his best not to let Andy Murray see him in that pathetic state. Believe me, I would have loved to see Del Potro clean Murray's clock, just like I enjoy watching Argentina beat England in the World Cup.

it was funny when the commentators were talking about del potro's crying: "Have you ever seen anything like this?" "Not on a Tennis Court"

i mean crying after winning a grand slam is different than crying from pain.

^^^I do kinda feel for the kid, hes got all this pressure and people talking about his talent and expecting him to make a move (hes been on the cusp for over a year now), and he feels he good enough im sure but he just can't healthy long enough to do so...it would be very frustrating

I've got nothing against anyone crying - but please tell me why we never saw Mac, Jimmy, Borg, and all those greats clearing off mid tournament?

How was 2002 for ya fella? ;)

As for the crying, if he did insult Murray's Mom and then start crying because of an injury then that's a pretty poor showing from Del Potro.

Murray did go over and pat him on the back at the end but Del Potro was too busy talking with the trainer/crying his eyes out for Andy to say any words.... Good gesture towards someone who had just insulted your Mother there by Andy.

Again it was probably not the pain that caused him to cry. I don't blame him for crying. Being plagued by injuries that keep you from playing is a very difficult thing. I dealt with it in college for an entire year and it was horrible though I never cried. God knows what it is like on the pro tour when you are a potential top 10 player and have a whole country's expectations on you.

This isn't like Djokovic though. This guy isn't faking.

Those players you mentioned aren't 6'5" 120 lbs like Del Potro. He's built like he's made of popsicle sticks.

Murray and many other players on tour have some idea of the extent of JMDP's back injury, I'm sure. There is probably more empathy than disgust for him in the locker room. None of them want to be in his shoes right now.

JMDP is not a 'fully grown' man. He is somewhat immature, so even though I did not see the match I'm not surprised to hear that he was so emotional on court in public.

Del Potro is listed as 20 years old, 6' 5", 172 lbs. How much more is he going to grow? And at what age is he suppose to be a man?

Murray's performance was pretty impressive once he became angry. He channeled that energy to his advantage, which I think he should learn to do rather than try to be something he's not: the iceman.

Del Potro should have raised a hand when he hit the ball at him. That's customary. He did not. I think this backfired on him because Murray started playing better.

ya and you know, I jump off cliffs w/o parachutes and takes hits from semis....honestly people like you say all that crap whenever someone calls you out and apparently you type of people have sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many experiences that one wouldn't believe. Like someone who gets bit by a dog and says that's pathetic, i've been bitten by an alligator and t-rex before. Stop being full of it please.:-?

He had his claws dug deep into a good match against a top player, one whom he was apparently emotionally involved with, and he had to quit due to a lingering injury.

It's hard to judge the guy unless you're in his shoes. Then again, it's not like it's the finals of Roland Garros.

Perhaps he was getting all emotional, pessimistically thinking about the end of his tennis career? Maybe those presumptions just suddenly hit him like a ton of bricks? If that's the case, I'd give him an excuse -- remember, adults should try to be understanding towards kids' actions/behaviors.

Breaking an ankle playing soccer, and getting hit by a car while riding a bike is not an uncommon experience.

The bottom line is this: physical pain is never a reason to cry for a grown man, ever. Hence it is most likely that Del Potro is not crying because of the injury. When Seles was stabbed, she wasn't sobbing. Her brain is preoccupied with dealing with the immediate injury and shock.

This is not like Sampras crying during his match against Courier at the US Open (which Sampras fought to win) because his coach had a terminal disease.

Even the British commentators were dismissive of Del Potro's sobbing, perhaps because they are biased for Andy Murray. In any case, you don't want to let your opponent see you in that state, especially having earlier altercations with Murray and his mom.

I guess I am just disappointed that I lost money on Del Potro beating Murray, and I'm taking it out on the poor guy.

When Nadal lost to Federer in that all great Wimbledon final last year - heaven knows what injury he had - he waited until he had got off court and according to him had a long bath and had a good cry - he was just 21 years of age but mature enough to be the true professional he is and never show his reaction to such a big loss .

DP hitting that ball to Murray's face signaled "GAME ON!"

So? It was Federer's hometown tournament so I think it's understandable he had a lot of emotion going on,coicidentally he also cried that year when he beat your hero Sampras at Wimbledon(I guess you were crying then as well). It's funny how guys like you constatly bash Federer fans for being too fanatical and then proceed to discuss Federer in a thread which has absolutely nothing to do with him.

Del Potro had back issues plaguing him for quite a while and he's only 20,tennis is his life and his career. You're not nearly in the same situation as him as tennis(and other sports you might play)is just a hobby for you,it's not your proffesion on which you depend on so you can't compare his situation and yours because they're very different.
