Is roddick shortening his career by getting involved in such grueling rallies?

I think Roddick will have a long career,he always wins a ton of free points off his amazing serve and that's always a nice advantage over some of the other guys who waste a lot more energy in holding their serve.

Roddick and Grueling Rallies? When? Where?

Knock on wood - Roddick seems to be in relatively okay shape. Don't think his playing style is hurting him physically.

well he's going to start losing some pace on that serve in about 2-3 years, so he can't rely on that forever.

I think he is doing very well, he is having more patience in his game and more important, he is winning. I think it is more noticeable on clay where his serve is less lethal and he has to fight more for his points. Once he is back on a hard court rallies should be shorter.

Nevertheless, what is the point of having a long carrer of lost matches?

Unless Roddick is really confident, this is how he normally plays now adays. Big serve, stay consistent from the baseline, and hope he sneaks a break or wins in the tiebreaker.

I'm impressed with him this week. He's putting a lot more action on his FH in the last year or 2 as opposed to flattening things out and it's working really well on the dirt. His movement has been impressive as well. Then there's always the serve. Maybe you can teach an old(ish) dog new tricks.

at least he gets some free points off his serves. Contrast to Nadal who's got the shortest short shelf life in the top 10.

I wouldn't call those rallies grueling. Roddick doesn't even make any sound when he hits the ball, he usually looks pretty relaxed out there even though he does a lot of running. Compare that to a lot of the other clay courters who cry in agony every time they hit the ball. Roddick is a cornfed jock through and through, he can handle it.

not any more than any other player, its clay so they all have long rallies, his game is based on his serve anyway

He's playing the same style as michael chang.

NO SPOILERS

Roddick has a big serve so he won't have a hard time holding serve. On the return of serve he may have more longer rallies (especially on clay) but he can hit very powerful shots sometimes. This is a contrast to Michael Chang who does not have a big serve to help him nor very powerful groundstrokes.
