Winning everything in the cycling was brilliant!

I also liked watching the fencing, although the scoring system was a bit strange.

Coming 4th overall in the medal table was also quite an achievement.

Phelps, basketball, Bolt.

And the ceremonies were absolutely amazing. No way tiny London can top that.

The fact that it's over and that the scumbag Chinese government's 2 week "party of goodwill and diplomacy" is over.

Did they ever approve a single protest application? The last I heard was that 77 groups had applied to "demonstrate" in the designated area, but none of them were approved by the Chinese government.

I'd agree. The Chinese government falsified documents about the gymnasts in question--no doubt about it. May their world and government crumble....

No one was EVER allowed to protest.

They were "allowed" to. They just had to let the government know who they were so that they could be given the proper paperwork (aka monitored more closely) to fill out.

According to NPR (national public radio) this week, no protest was officially or formally allowed to be held as no request was accepted nor recognized due to a delay....

My favourite moment of the Olympics was when I saw Matthias Steiner breaking the Olympic Record and though he was the strongest man on earth,go on celebrating like a small child and then crying and pulling up his dead's wife picture in the medal ceremony.

My second favourite moment was when I saw Du Toit finishing her race.Amazing.

Watching Oksana Chusovitina win silver in the vault.

For those that don't know: Her son has leukemia and she couldn't get a hospital bed for him in her native Uzbekistan. She struck a deal with German coaches that if she would compete for them, they would treat her son. She and her husband moved to Germany, waited out the three years for citizenship while her son was being treated. Once she got citizenship in 2006, she started competing for Germany, culminating in the silver medal in vault at the age of 33.

I was hoping she'd win gold. The last girl surpassed her.

Edit: Oh, and her son is doing well, his leukemia is in remission.

I'd say Bolt's 200 meters and Phelps' one hundredth of a second win were the greatest moments. Track was the most fun event, by far. The basketball final was quite entertaining as well.

Phelps winning 8 gold medals whilst the rest of the men's swimming won a combined amount of 7 gold medals.

Bolt pretty much raping the competition in both 100m and 200m (way to celebrate before the race is over).

And the two Thai gold medals in boxing and weightlifting (the silver, for Karate was pretty entertaining).

I never did see it but, is it true that Bryan Clay helped up Roman Serble in the 1500m yet came last? I read it from an article, but not that sure:

Clay, exhausted, slogged to a dead-last finish in his last and least favorite decathlon event, the 1500 meters, in 5 minutes, 6.22 seconds. He helped up a fallen competitor, 2004 champion Roman Sebrle, and walked slowly around the finish area, shaking hands with the rest of the field one by one. This was an exercise in perseverance, and survival. Clay, who battled pounding rain, wicked heat, sleep deprivation and tense competition over two grueling days, earned his title, too -- "World's Greatest Athlete."

You guys should read this article too.

Yes, Great Britain committed the money to cycling and it showed!

My favorites were the swimming, cycling, and distance races. No surprise there, eh? I was happy to see Rafa get the gold medal too. He's a great kid.

Yeah money well spent. Track cycling is really exciting to watch and it's something kids can get into easily enough.

This story is heartwarming. I was in tears when the story was aired on TV.

Especially since they have to steal them from their families at 3 to do it.

WTF.

too bad world respect is not related to gold medal count- lol

True. Their girls are still awesome.

My favorite part was the 100m Fly finish by Phelps. I closed my eyes 5 seconds before the finish. Then I knew he just won by .01 secs. Unbelievable.

Bryan Clay. I've always wanted to try decathlon. They should start awarding the decathlon winners during the closing ceremony rather than awarding the marathon winners.

Whao dude, it's just a joke. Calm down, man. We lost this Olympics because we still have this kind of mentality thinking that they're still third world country and poses no threat to us. The truth is China has already surpassed us in sport, and they will soon surpass us in millitary, economy, and political influence, if we still have this kind of mentality.

What exactly is a joke? That China takes children from their families at an early age and moves them to sports academies run by the Chinese government?

We didn't "lose" the Olympics. We got the second highest gold medal total and the highest overall medal total.

And as far as your other comments, anyone that knows anything about world politics knows that China has been a major military and economic power for a long, long time. Their political influence is limited by the fact that they are a communist country in a world that has pretty much abandoned communism.

So I guess the gymnastics commentators were lying during the olympics?

Those children were not forced by the government to do Gymnastics. They are willing to devote themselves, because they have passion for the sport. If you don't respect the chinese government, at least respect the athletes who devote their lives to the sport.

The chinese don't just take them away in the night, they have to ask permission to do so.

But once they do, then yes, the government has complete control over those kids. But they chose it. If not them, the government would probably find someone else, and it's a great chance for people in the country to escape the poverty that comes with agricultural life.

China an economic power? What do you base that on? Their GDP is 5th best in the world, slightly higher than Italy’s and lower than France’s. Meanwhile China has a population of 1.3 Billion+ while France and Italy have populations of 57-58 million (approximately). Somehow I fail see how China can be an economic power based on these facts.

Where do you get your "facts"? China hasn't surpassed anyone in sport. Just those sports that are held once every four years-like diving and ping pong. China didn't win a single TEAM SPORT medal and most of their medals were won on judging events-like the Chinese gymnast who fell on her butt and yet was STILL awarded a bronze medal.

As for the military and the economy, China will not "soon" pass the USA and, there's no guarantee that it will ever do so in those areas. I dunno about political influence-mainly it's just paying people off in places like Africa and the Middle East.

Anyway, the picture you paint is, as it always is with you, way too simplistic. While China is a military and economic power now, it is also still a developing country and there may be limits as to how much a fascist-governed country can actually grow until it reaches its limits (or implodes).

A very good ego booster for a third world country.

ha! technically you dont know what you're talking about. 3rd world country?
First, that term (as well as 1st world and 2nd world countries) are not being used anymore after the fall of berlin's wall and the desintegration of Soviet Union.
If any, China is a 2nd world country as it still remains as comunist one.

This is EXACTLY the type of mentality that I'm talking about. Typical american excuses to make themselves feeling better. America needs to accept losses rather than sitting in front of the computer and making non-sense excuses, or we better start getting used to second places.

That is not true. China's economy is second only to the US with PPP measurement, and 3rd with nominal measurement. In addition, their growth rate is over 11% which is astounding compared to the size of their economy.

"We" came in second in the Olympics a number of times-being beat out in the medal count by the Soviet Union. And like the China, the USSR was a fascist dictatorship desperate for international "respect". Didn't seem to bother us then. As someone else said, Olympic medal count doesn't confer status on a country. Takes a bit more than that...

i do have to agree here. but let me add the same goes for the US.

Well of course. The US won the Gold medal count in 2000 and 2004. I don't remember people thinking it was some huge deal. It is just sports not life or death or anything meaningful. Even among sporting events I would not even put the Olympics in the top 5 events as far as Americans are concerned. People just don't care about table tennis, synchronized diving, weightlifting, ect.

China has 1.3 billion people and they commit money and training of children to many obscure Olympic sports. It is inevitable what the results will be.
