How to start mains without starting clamp

Using a dropweight, what's the best way to start the mains using a 2 piece string job? I have no starting clamp. I don't have a starting pin either. Currently, I pull both ends of the mains with one pull, then clamp, then pull main at a time after that... Someone told me that might be less consistent using a starting pin...

go to Youtube and search Gamma x-2 the guy there is using it with no starting clamp.

starting clamp is just to hold the string anyways. u can use the puller to do that or 1 of your floating clamps. Youtube is best for string Job and go to stringing machine section of this forum.

It won't take a genius...
Clamp the 2 previous mains of the the main you're going to pull... keep that clamp there, use the other clamp until you tie the short end(or any end for 2piece)... then you can alternate clamps for the other end...

This is what I do in a hurry with floating clamps - pull both center mains on the same pull and clamp at the start of the mains. Don't move this first clamp

Now, repull one side and clamp at the bottom of both mains. Go ahead for another two mains on that side, each time moving the second clamp.

Then go back to the untensioned center main, tighten this second main, remove the first clamp, and reclamp at the end of the center mains using the first clamp - continue until done.

You will get a slightly loser tension in the middle due to the half-tightened inch of the string at the top of the first mains, but I could not feel any difference. If you are really picky, yuo could increase the center main tension by a few pounds on the first, combined pull.

I'm not sure if i can use this method, or the video's method. I'm currently using a Alpha Pioneer DC Plus, which are fixed clamps, not floating clamps. These fixed clamps only grab onto one string at a time.

Sorry. Since you mentioned you had a drop-weight, I automatically assumed you were working with flying clamps.

But just so you know, Yulitle has a whole bunch of videos on Youtube as well on the sticky here. So do a search. Here's a freebie.

by the way, which way is superior; the starting pin( used with a string tied with a bulky knot) or YULitle's method? I'm about to string some more racquets, but the only time I used YULitle's lethod, the clamp at the throat slipped, so I stopped using it. Currently using a starting pin.

Thanks for the freebie, there were so many videos, got too lazy looking for the one I needed. This method makes perfect sense. But yea, I still don't know which method is more superior, but I don't like doing starting knots, so I like this way more.

well I think I'll be sticking to the starting pin method, as I've just bought a 3 dollar starting pin with 9 dollar shipping,.
