For any longtime WTA followers would you consider todays field the worst one in the history of womens tennis. I certainly do.

I haven't watched tennis during the days of Seles/Graf or Evert/Navratilova, so I wouldn't know for sure, but women's tennis does suck these days so quite possibly yes.
I don't keep up with the WTA, but the latest stuff I know is that Mauresmo won the Open Gaz de France (beating Jankovic along the way).
I know Jankovic is just sucking.

Too bad you didn't watch or keep up with Mauresmo's wins in Paris...she played spectacular tennis.

Not really even entirely true. You sort of a know a fat grossly out of shape Serena will be gifted every slam these days from her choking opponents.

Doesn't really make sense that with so many more (former Soviet countries) and better conditioned athletes playing the game, that the quality of play would suddenly and inexplicably decline. I don't think it has. What's changed is the STYLE rather than the LEVEL of play, because the women now have more shot power than leg speed/agility, so they feel they have to go for broke on almost every shot, a very different style than what was played in past decades. This makes the experience of watching the game less satisfying, but I think there's as much or more talent than ever.

Even if I agreed with your accessment (and I personally dont but respect your opinion) that wouldnt explain the biggest problem of all of the current womens game. The biggest problem of all in the current womens game is that 99% of the current women including 90% of the top women (aka everyone but Serena) are chronic chokers with the most feeble mental games imaginable.

Well, the game has changed so much since the days of Evert and Navratilova but I think that what the WTA is lacking is a continually dominant player as well as a fun and entertaining rivalry (like Fed and Nadal have, for example). Many of these women seem to be total head cases nowaday...wonder why...any ideas?
The dominant player (s) are the Williams sisters, especially Serena, but their lives are so filled with things other than tennis that they drift in and out of the tennis scene...and miraculously come back and play each other in a lot of finals. and Serena becomes #1 ...just like that.
When they play they are very, very good, and when they don't play the quality of WTA tennis is quite awful.
And when they retire...(at age 40 maybe) god help the crediility of the TWA.
And credit to the gene pool and Richard Williams. Without him/it it would have meant the dumming down of women's tennis.
And Safina is so erratic...just like her frustrating brother..both drive me crazy

Mauresmo is actaully cracking her one hander now. It's quite a joy to see. She was doing far too much looping before now.

The field is just like it has always been in women's tennis mediocrity with greatness. Just the problem is the greatness of this generation does not care. If Serena Williams and Venus were in shape, Justine Henin did not quit and Sharapova was not always injured you would have four vastly talented women at the top. Serena Williams is a great player as many seem to forget the fact that she is out of shape and can beat the rest of the field is a testimony to herself not to the weakness of the field. If Serena upped her own fitness and raised the bar we would see either good things or Serena get 8 straight slams, but I think Sharapova will be back and healthy soon and hopefully finally in her prime.

I know what you mean. But none of the other women are very interesting. I thought i could root for jankovic and Ivanovic but alas i just don't care. Maybe Martina Hingis will come back.:roll:

Its truly in an utterly pathetic state. So bad overweight Serena can dedicate herself part time to the game, eat Krispy Kremes for training and win the last two slams.
