Be top 3 in your high school, have great strokes and work ethics, then try out for the college team during tryouts.
Best advice is practice 5 days a week, at least 4 hours a day, and become a decent player before you enter college.

There are no rules for how high you need to be on your team, how many times a week you need to play, and how many hours a day you need to play. In the end, if you want to play college tennis, you need to start contacting college coaches. Some will be interested, some will not be. But the first step is communication.

I kinda agree with cadi. I've seen some guys on my college team that I think could get trounced by some of the top players in my old HS. Depending on which college and how good of the team they are will tell you what kind of regime you will need. Check out the college you wan to go to and see a few matches or team practices and see what you will be up against.

It also depends on the caliber of the school that you want to play at. If you want to play at a mid-range D3 school, and you are on a really good high school team, you definitely don't have to be anywhere close to top 3.

when you find out where you want to go to school look into there team. contact the coach and tell him who you are. let him see results of tournaments you play. some college sites tell you how good of a junior player people on the team where. if you dont compare to them not a good chance of you making the team.

exactly.
look at the freshmen on the roster, and look up their sectional/national ranking, and compare it to yours. if it's similar, you might want to look more in-depth into that team.
