I was really impressed with her 1 handed BH in the Andalusia final against Jankovic. She is a poor-woman's Henin. But I have a feeling her style will not be conducive to faster surfaces. Not enough time for the loop setup. She should also develop a quick slice for those situations.

I am also working on a theory about women and 1 handed BHs, specially ones that have topspin. The theory is based on observations of Navarro and Henin. Maybe even Navratilova. To put it delicately, I wonder if women who are not well-endowed in certain respects are better suited for 1 handed backhands. Being well-endowed could interfere in the closed stance positioning and across the body movement of the dominant arm.

Please comment on my theory. Keep it decent. It is a scientific discussion.

she upset venus williams at the 2009 AO, and wasn't that match played on a fast surface ?

i don't know if her backhand was to blame for the loss. from what i have read, it seems she ran out of gas in the 3rd set.

I think there are too many other factors going on with the BH to make that analagy. It would be like saying the better movers in the men's game are all small, well, to put it delicately, in the crotch area. :) Sorry, but that is the best coorelation I could come up with.

ridiculous "theory" - the right arm crosses the chest with either 1H or 2H to prepare, and by the time the ball is struck the arms are exended. If anything, the one-hander allows more breathing room.

Exactly! You are much more constricted across the chest with a two-handed backhand than with a one-handed backhand. With a one-handed backhand, your right arm swings out and away from your body. With a two-handed backhand, your left arm comes across your chest and squeezes your chest. So if anything, big boobs would hinder 2HBH's much more than 1HBH's and small boobs would make it less constrictive to swing 2HBH's.

Navarro was an interesting player to watch at the Australian Open; she has a classic game with the one handed backhand. For an ugly looking girl with a goofy haircut and a funny walk shes a decent player who could possibly crack the top 10 someday.

Who is this girl?.........

Who is this girl?...She seems to be Argentine and she also seems to be the new Gabriela Sabatini.....
For the description everybody makes in this thread she must be playing like Gaby and in the same style....
I've never saw her playing a complete match,I saw her once in a news program on TV but her face was not shown...
So I think that we are welcoming a new Gaby....Please tell me where is she going to play her next tournament...thanks..

She's Spanish.

Her semis and final from the Andalucia Tennis Experience in Marabello, Spain were shown on Tennis Channel this past weekend. If they repeat it, you should watch it. You will be amazed by her backhand. :)

Yeah and with Mofils being one fo the better movers in the men's game, and him being of African American descent....you can see where I'm going with this :p Kinda disproves that xD

Not always. There are 4 variants - both arms stretched, one bent, the other bent, or both bent.

Do you agree that the open stance 2 hander is less likely to be "obstructed"?

How is Monfils "of African American descent"? He's French. He's not any kind of American at all.

What grip does she use, I'm watching it on youtube the AO match with Venus and the commentator says she is using the same side of the racquet. Like Jelena does with her FH/BH. That 1hander is awesome, deep and lots of pace.

Have you tried conducting a practical experiment yourself? For the sake of science, you know. ie : strap a couple of grapefruit or tie a pair of jugs on your chest hehe :)

It is possible. Extreme Eastern on the BH = Western on the FH. She can continue using the same racquet face on both sides, though usually players will come to the neutral (Continental) first, and then move the grip over to the opposite side, resulting in a different racquet face.

An analagy is a typo, sometimes inserted by mistake when trying to type the word analogy.

yeah, I also dislike that "expresion", especially when it is spelled incorrectly. Do you mean expression?

Muaahahaha, I'm just giving you grief. :)

Remains to be seen if the BH holds up on faster courts.

Agree with you. She still needs some work, but she is refreshing to watch. Same with the forehand. I think she will need to shorten that a bit for faster courts.

Uh, what does her looks and walk have to do with her possibly being top 10 talent?

Interesting.

How about this:

For a professional athlete who has worked very hard and has some great looking strokes she has a decent chance to crack the top 10 someday.

Its a patronymic name that stems from Navarra (Nafarroa in Basque) in the Basque country

That may be the origin but is a very common last name not only in spain but in latin america too. Im just wondering why on erth suresh would think that it was an "indigenous" name.

I agree, I don't think Suresh meant that though :)

Indigenous does not necessarily mean anything related to "indians".

Indigenous means "rooted in" or something from a particular place.

Indigenous peoples, population groups with ancestral connections to place prior to formally recorded (i.e. written) history (could be anywhere, Asia, Europe, America, etc), indigenous plants, indigenous minerals..etc.
