Federer Tips Murray To win Wimbledon

I have been saying same thing since last year, Murray's best chance at first slam is Wimbledon.

I would compare the pressure on him as FO for Roger, the expectations are HUGE. He better be ready, mentally and physically.

Federer is a great player, but I don't think he really calls it like it is too well. I remember him saying he expected Davydenko to advance to the finals in the FO, only to get destroyed by Soderling. I love Federer, but I really feel like Murray is not going to shine after reading that.

Lol. Well, I really think Murray stands a good chance this Wimbledon. But time will tell.

I wouldnt compare Soderling with Murray.

Soderling surprised everyone, came out of nowhere. Remember.. Sod..who?

Murray is well established, except for a major he has had a good year.

I like his chances.

a lot of people thought davy would win. it was impossible to tell if Soderling would maintain form or crumble after his big victory.

I think Djokovic may be a dark horse at Wimbledon this year......after going out early at Roland Garros....and last year at Wimbledon.....nobody's really talking about him......he may make a good run this year.....who knows?

Murray will make the semifinals of Wimbledon.

I am done with attempting to predict and just want to watch tennis. Though Murray seems like he is ready to make another run.

I don't know though. The article doesn't say that Federer tips Murray (I would be very surprised if he had) as far as I can tell. All it says to me is that he thinks the Scot can do well there. Which doesn't sound that unusual, because the Scot has done alright there in the past. Moreover, if someone asks you if the hometown hero has a chance it makes sense to be nice and play along, especially if that guy's a "rival" of yours.

I think Fed is too arrogant and insecure to tip anyone other than himself to win a slam. :-? What was Fed's exact quote? I think it's all British media sensationalism.

There seems to be a belief that if Murray is to win a major, it will be at the US Open or the Australian.

I think he has an excellent chance at Wimbledon though if i'm honest. If Nadal's injury forces him out then i'd be VERY confident.

Murray loves playing against Federer and with the crowd behind him, i'd like his chances.

Ask the Brits that, not winning the title is not alright.

Or look at the Videos they are making.

the title of this thread is misleadint. He doesn't tip Murray to win wimbledon,he says he will do well there.
Of course he doesn't tip somewhere else to win it,because he will do whatever he can to win it for himself!

The title of the thread is the title of the article, where are you looking??

It also says:

"but Roger Federer believes the Scot's maiden major title could come at Wimbledon next month".

I did not make this up.

Well, obviously. The Brits would only accept a win there, something they can put in their history books, knight someone for, etc. But my point is that the title of this thread is completely wrong. Federer did not "tip Murray to win Wimbledon". He simply told the Brits that their boy plays well on the surface, which isn't a lie, and comes off as very complimentary coming from a five-time champ. The Brits (who very cleverly worded the title of their article) took this to mean that their guy has an excellent chance of stealing it from under the noses of the defending champ (Nadal) and said record-holder (Federer). Which is simply jumping the boat a little.

I mean, Soderling had a chance this Sunday (unless you believe one can't fight history), so of course Murray certainly has a chance and a much better one than Sod.

this is not a direct quote of Federer saying, and the thread article was Murray to shine or something. Not to win it all.

edit to add:I don't blame the OP for this,it's most probably the english media talking out of his *** once again.
Until I see a quote from Federer saying I believe Murray will win Wimbledon NEXT MONTH,I don't believe it.

Again, it's out of character for him to tip anyone else to win a slam. I think it's just the British media liberally applying Fed's quote to please their readers' taste.

Here's a longer quote I found:
"I do think I'm the favourite, actually, with all the success I've had," Federer said. "There are a lot of tough players out there - Andy Murray's best surface might be grass and I think hes playing excellent.

"From Rafa we can only expect good tennis anyway. There are lots of dangerous players but I have the game and the experience to win at Wimbledon many more times. Id like to get this one this year."

it's not in the character of any last year finalist, former no.1,former Wimbledon champion of 5 times,to tip someone else over him. especially Murray.

Oh BTW, he said 'many more times'? Like 5 or 10? I guess Murray would have to wait at least five more years. :)

Federer tipping Murray to WIN over him?Are you serious? LOL

I agree. I'm not saying he should. Originally, I was going to point out that it would not be surprising to see another player come out and tip the hat to someone who is arguably a co-favorite. But I realized that it wouldn't make sense for a player who is very much a favorite to come out and tap a player who is probably at best a dark horse pick.

I agree. If he said it about Nadal,I would think it's possible, but Murray definitely not.

I totally disagree unless Nadal is out injured and Fed decides not to show up. The favorite has to be one of the two. They've clearly been the best grass court players over the last several years. It's not even close. I'm not saying Murray can't win it but favorite? Fed is way off. With Nadal seemingly injured why wouldn't he say himself? I don't get it.

The exact quote about Murray.

"Andy Murray's best surface might be grass – I think he's playing excellent"

Why Federer said that
- To please the British media. They didn't like him saying not so nice things about Murray in the past.
- He probably meant Murray has a good chance to make semis. I don't think he believes that Murray can beat Nadal or him on grass.

It's an OK way to get the pressure off his back.

"Hey, don't look at me. I expect Murray to win"

Then if he goes out and win it it'll be like

"Ooooohhh, well look at thaaaaaat!!!"

Smart thinking. Put even more pressure on Murray than there already is. I would say there is less than 0% chance he really feels this way, LOL!
