Murray's best chance for a slam win, 2010 AO??

Andy G

I think Murray best chance to win a slam will be 2010 AO. Not that he doesn't have a chance at 09 US. I'm just thinking of his best chance. I figure Fed has too much to play for right now, going for a 6th straight US. I figure him for a win. However, Fed has been inconsistent at the AO. 04, 06, 07. We all know about his clay performance. The AO is not clay, but at Wimby and US he has been utter domination the last few years, the AO he isn't. Nadal has only won the AO once and I don't see him winning it again soon. Murray is a favorite against anyone else. My prediction will be a SF loss by Fed(1), a QF loss by Nadal(3), and Murray(2) in the final against someone else (the field). Murray to win 2010 AO.

Hes had quite a few chances already. Including last year at the USO where he was whipped out by Fed. He had a chance at the AO. Lost to the inferior HC player Verdasco playing his best tennis.. He had a chance at Wimbeldon.. With all the support of his coutry behind him.. Fell short to Roddick.. HES HAD CHANCES!!!

Wouldn't Roger be super-distracted right now? And it'll be the first major without Mirka in a long time, I am guessing? Plus Nadal has that knee issue and Djokovic has been sucking?

Go for it Murray-O! But you suck and I hope you lose in the first round.

Weren't loads of bandwagoners saying he was the favourite for the AO this year? Didn't exactly come to fruition. I don't see him winning it.

Mirka will be in New York with their daughters , they have already hired 2 nannys to stay with them in NYC. I think that will give Roger a lot of comfort.

Murray was ill at the AO. He said he regurgitated the night before the Verdasco match.

I'm not saying he hasn't had his chances. Had is past tense. I'm talking right now, what his best chances are.

actually I think it will be a relief. I have a 5 day old boy, I play on a billiard league 2 days a week, and now I play better because I don't need to worry about my wife calling about being in labor.

Ohh geesh.. Fed was playing with mono..Sampras puked ON COURT at Louis Armstrong stadium. Murray was good to go, he played, Its all about winning. He was healthy at Wimbeldom..

In short, Murray needs to pick it up as far as slams are concerned

You're blaming him for losing a five-setter while having the flu to someone who almost beat the eventual champion?

No but Murray PLAYED!!!. If he was that sick he should have just forfeited.. But he went out and played. Champions play and win if they can when they are their mentallly or physically worse and go BEYOND expectations placed on them. Its one thing to get injured during a match.. Its another thing to committ to playing when you are sick or injured before. He had his chances to forfeit. But he played pretty well and didnt seem rough physically

I think the loss just had more or less to do with the fact was outclassed and outplayed by Verdasco. Not because he was on his death bed

I actually agree with this, if you are playing, then play, period. If he felt so terrible he could have retired.

No you wouldnt. But sometimes you just have to persevere and gut it out if you are sick.. Thats how champions are made, and careers are built. You arent always going to be 100 percent physically.

And thats a big problem I see with not just tennis player today but young studs in all sports in general.. Hell Larry Bird played with a concussion, bad back at one time during the final stretch of his career. Jordan played with the flu in the finals and scored 30 some points. Fed played with mono.. Pete played while he was pukin all over the court at the USO.

Kids today will sit out collect their million dollar check with a little sprained finger

I think he will go deep in all 4 majors next year, but if he hasn't won one by USO 2010, I fear his opportunity may pass.

The point is GS that Murray HAS to play his best if he wants to beat Federer and Nadal at the USO and AO. Murray can't beat those guys if he can't.

Well.... Maybe youre right.. But he also had to make it to them as well.. Not lose to likes of Verdasco and Roddick.

I don't think he'll win in Australia, the weather makes it very tough and I don't think it sits well with him.

I believe Wimbledon or the US Open are his best bets.

gamesampras has point there, you're not going to expect to have the best physical form and health for every match you play on your career, pro players have to deal with it 'cause you need results and nothing more, they have to play trough colds, viruses, mosquito bites, sore feet, foot fungus you name it... and on side of that... every disease they can catch from traveling as much as they do

Sampras won 14 slams with Thalassemia Minor. You don't really have any excuses now.

IMO USO is still his best shot at a slam title, not AO.Murray prefers faster conditions.

I think he has a good shot at the US Open. If he stays positive and focused he just might win his 1st slam.

I think US open 2011 will be his best chance Federer and Roddick will be getting old and this is Murray's best surface.

Clay RG:
Never
grass WMB:
Murray lost against Roddick this year and Nadal the year before. He will still have to face these players and probably also Federer the next 2 years. Although he could win it some day it is not the most likely to be the first.
HC AO:
2008 lost to Tsonga and Verdasco 2009
I think this surface is not ideal for him, I think this would be very unlikely if he can't even beat Verdasco or Tsonga he is never going to beat Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Roddick or even Del Potro here.
HC USO:
Best surface reached final beat Nadal and Del Potro last year.
This is the most likely tournament he is going to win. However I don't think it is going to be this or even next year. Roddick is playing very well and ofcourse Federer will also be at his best, not to mention Djokovic. 2011 would be his best chance with Federer and Roddick past there prime.

At the end of his career Murray will most likely have 2 or more USopen (2011,2012) slams and 1 or 2 Wimbledon's(2013 and or 2014). But I don't see him win RG and AO is not very likely either considering his defeats there last years.

Yeah, champions play and win. A bit like how Federer played and won at AO 08 after he had mono?

Not forfeiting means that he wanted to try. It doesn't mean that he was in good condition. He decided to try and he lost. And despite his condition (doctors suspected mono), he narrowly lost to a guy who was playing out of his skin.

He lost to Tsonga. He couldn't even beat him? Do you even remember that Tsonga absolutely schooled Nadal in the same tournament and cut through the draw?

He lost to Verdasco? Don't you recall Verdasco nearly beating Nadal?

Give the guy a break. He was so ill that the doctors suspected mono.

And if you think Roddick is a threat to him on hard, you're in for a shock. Grass is one thing. Hard is another thing entirely. My hope is that they meet at the USO.

^^^ Wasn't the whole mono episode with Murray a month & half after he lost to Verdasco? He may be sick but I don't think it was mono...

and doctors suspected mono but he was never diagnosed with it...

No, it was the same thing he had in Australia. He never allowed himself to actually recover from it after he lost in Australia. He ended up pulling out of Dubai. I recall my friend telling me how horrendous he looked when she saw him. He looked very ill, apparently.

I'll get some links if you don't want to take my word for it.

Here's a few:

"The British No 1 spent two days in bed before blowing Austrian Jurgen Melzer off court to power into the fourth round of the Australian Open. "

"The 21-year-old Scot admitted: "I have been sick for the last two days so I've spent a lot of time in bed. I had a sore head, sore throat and, generally, I wasn't feeling great. "

That was a very impressive win by Sampras. Murray (and Djokovic) would have both retired in that situation!

Just because some clown puked and decided to continue playing giving his 100% (rest would have been the best decision in that position), Murray should also give in 100% if he is extremely sick? That doesn't make sense.

he'll turn it on 110% and murray will have a hard time

Murray puked on court v Pavel during the USO in 2005 - he continued the match and won.

To my knowledge, Murray has only retired injured twice during a match - due to cramp as an 18 year old @ Queen's in 2005, and when he did his wrist @ Hamburg in 2007.

But don't let any of these facts get in the way of giving Murray a good bashing.

Think it's only once. Murray didn't retire against Johansson. He played on and lost. Think he retired with the wrist injury only. And even then he tried to play on.

Btw, I think that Murray will win a slam here coming up, and I think he's going to do it in impressive fashion, beating Nadal and Federer along the way. Could be next month, could be sometime next year, but I see it happening soon.
