Federer's Greatest Match

I was curious what you guys thought was Federer's greatest match was. How I'm defining greatest is one where he can't miss, where every shot he dreams up comes to fruition. Basically, a match he blows the guy away to a degree unparalleled. I was surfing the web, looking for tennis match videos, and curious to find a ridiculous match from Roger Federer, and thought that who better to ask then you guys. Thanks.

For me I still think 2005 AO semi's against Safin. That match was so epic, I remember watching it back then, just in complete awe. A close second would be Federer Vs Nadal final at MS Rome 2006.

Federer against Safin. He played out of his mind, it was amazing to see some of those shots and still see him lose. Another one would be the 2004 USO. I've never seen someone destroy Hewitt so easily as he did. Some of those forehands were unreal. I remember Hewitt would hit a shot that would have been a clear winner against anyone except Federer would get to it and hit a winner

Ones that come to mind:

03 Masters Cup Final vs. Agassi

04 US Open Final vs. Hewitt

05 Wimbledon Final vs. Roddick

06 Wimbledon vs. Gasquet

06 Wimbledon vs. Henman

06 Wimbledon vs. Bjorkman

06 Masters Cup Final vs. Blake

07 Australian Open vs. Roddick

It seems pretty ridiculous to list, as his best matches ever, two matches that he lost. Surely, he's played better.

AO 2007 vs. Roddick. He completely outclassed the guy. Fed could do no wrong and Roddick was powerless. I'm not sure god mode can get any more godlike than that.

TMC 2003 vs Agassi in the final. Outrageous! USO 2005 was fed in full flight. Sorry to Agassi fans but in the final, Federer went on a major mental walkabout. Even when Agassi was up in the match, Federer was routinely slapping outrageous winners.

Sampras at 1999 Wimbledon vs Andre Agassi or Federer 2007 AO vs Andy Roddick

Which was the better performance?

Sampras' service display was great in 1999 Wimbledon but his return game wasn't particularly memorable. He only broke Agassi 3 times even though Agassi was serving below 50%.

Federer's performance at the 2007 AO was a thorough domination in all areas and an amazing display all court tennis. I was more impressed by this one. Coincidentally enough, Gonzalez put on another quality beatdown in the other semi against Haas, hitting 40+ winners and committing 3 unforced errors in the entire match.

Federer had mono and a back injury against safin in the semis of that AO :(

No, the mono was in early '08 and the back injury was in late '08.

What I did like about the loss what how he threw himself at the ball on the last point.

That's what sold me as a fan of Sampras, was when he lost match point against Guy Forget in the Davis Cup finals of '91. He just flung himself after the ball.

When guys are willing to do that to stay in a match, I gotta hand it to them.....

Oh, to me, I learn more about players from their great losses than from their great wins.

He's won so many matches, his losses are more memorable. Plus in these two matches he did have match points. It was just awesome to see someone stand up to him when he was at his full potential.

Great list. The 2003 TMC Round Robin match vs Agassi should also be included...Amazing tennis and really the turning point when Fed truly became Fed.

Seriously NO ONE has said 2008 wimbledon final? I'm not saying it's definitely the best, but I'm shocked it's not even in the conversation.

Yeah, good call. I saw all of these except the Agassi. You could nominate a lot more. Pretty much that whole 2007 AO is up for grabs. That might be the most dominating performance at a GS ever.

That match was purely emotional and not as of great tennis federer could have produced.

i second this. I also remember a match in monte carlo when fed went an entire set without making an error.

throwing in a vote for fed roddick ao 07. Absolutely ridiculous, Federer himself couldn't really explain why he played so well in his interview I think.

Also he was almost on his way to a God-mode performance against Soderling at the US Open this year after 2 sets, just flawless with a bagel. Then it sort of caved in.

I think it's a tie between the Blake TMC Final and the 2007 AO semi against Roddick - both complete destructions of quality opponents. Blake's was especially impressive because he was actually playing pretty well - Roddick made it at least a little easier with poor net approaches.

AO 2007 was insane, the first set wasn't so good, because Federer got broken, but after that he played just unbelievably well. He won 10 straight games, and was 7/7 on break point conversions. In the second set he also only lost 6 points, and won 24, that's probably up there for being the closest anyone got to a golden set in like the the last 10 years at least. I feel gutted as well because I missed it due to the time difference and having to be at University, I felt gutted. He literally just could not miss in that match. Bearing in mind this is the semi-final of a GS and he's playing a quality opponent in Roddick, yeah he's beaten him loads of times, but c'mon letting him win only 6 points in one set, that's just unreal.

The question is his greatest match, though, which imo means his best performance. It seems almost insulting to say that the guy who has been unquestionably the best player of this decade, has played his best when he has lost. I.e., implying that these other guys are really better than him.

That can happen. Federer played out of his mind at the french open 2008 and lost to Nadal 6-1 6-3 6-0.

I thought he played crappy tennis..there was so much tentativeness in shots..pretty ridiculous.
Of course Nadal played great and probably would've won it in straights but I saw no willingness from Roger to even fight in that match.
He just wasnt there from the first point to the last.

In the TMC Final 2006, where I think that Blake played a really good match but he had nothing against Federer who fired backhand DTL the whole match. It's one of the best matches I've seen from Federer.

Against Haas at the FO this year, god that one was intense.
Maybe not his greatest match EVER, but totally incredible how he came back after losing the first two sets.
