I posted on this in the Classic Rackets forum, but I thought I'd ask here as Nate Ferguson, Ron Yu, et al. at Priority One are stringers.....

I was pointed to your media page on your website and saw some interesting pictures of Wilson Pro Staff Midsizes in various states:

I'm curious about the frames....

Is the broken one the one I've heard mentioned as the frame that Pete Sampras smashed in Stockholm in '98 while he was stressed out (playing against Jason Stoltenberg, IIRC) trying to secure the #1 ranking for the sixth consecutive year?

(a far, far underrated accomplishment IMO)

Also, is that the one that's subsequently dissected?

Also, there's a pristine example as well. I assume Sampras had stocked up on what was left of the St. Vincents. How many did he acquire during his playing days. I've read that post-retirement that he only kept eight of his St. Vincent Pro Staff Midsize frames. Have the rest gone to Aaron Krickstein as I've seen him still using it on the OCS?

Here's a link to a wiki page to which I've been contributing. I was wondering if I had P1's permission add any interesting info on the PS85 straight from the pro stringers themselves. I'm just an enthusiast of this particular model.

I don't believe Nate has ever been on these boards to my knowledge and I don't believe Ron has posted in a year or two so you probably won't hear from them.

not sure about, Nate..... buy Ron does post from time to time, and he has recently posted.

Ron actually posted on the board yesterday, and again about a month ago. So maybe he'll chime in.

What you see in the second picture is why the PS 85 is so good, you see the endless fibres which is, in my opinion, not easy to produce fast.
The new rackets have short fibres which are injected and the cyclus-time is verry short and the rackets are easy to produce and what is most important cheap. I think , but I'm not shure, that the paint is the expensiest part of the racket. This is why we never know what kind of racket are really using, they can look equal but maybe not inside.
I will make clear, this is an idea which can be true but I don't know.
As I know basalt is a kind of stone often used to make isolation for buildings, fibres are verry short and often used as cheap fillers.

Well it's already very obvious why Basalt is now being used by Wilson, and it's not because it's expensive!

Does anyone know if Sampras counterbalanced with lead in handle. If so, was it countered to orig SV specs or made more head heavy?

Yes and I'm going to take a guess at 4 points head light (13 inches) just because that's what my Wilson Jack Kramer Autograph Wood racket is at, and I heard his racket is very similar in specs to that racket.

I'm a believer that you do not mess with the balance of a racket. You can add weight but need to add it to maintain original balance. That way you optimize racket performance.

This may be a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. In the second picture, the one of the throat....is that wood?

I have no idea what's in the throat. Maybe it's part of the alchemy of the previous versions of the PS85.

You can see the inner braid of Kevlar and graphite, along with foam in the cross section......

Hoping someone at Priority 1 or Wilson might be willing to discuss it.

But, I do understand if the information is proprietary.

Hi to all tennis friends,

I would need the help of any Sampras racquets expert.
I know this thread probably is not exactly the most proper one for such a question, but I thought that such a thing did not worth to create a new one :)
Question is: did Sampras ever played with a "J...B" buttcap coded PS Midsize (Belgium made by Donnay, if I'm right) early on his career?

Yep, if I'm correct he used to play with Pro Cynetic 1 model from Donnay before his Wilson days.
But my question was about a specific production model of Pro Staff Midsize...I always gave as a fact that he only played with Saint Vincent frames, but I would like to get a confirm from users more expert than me on this topic.
