If you could pick one of the following ex pros as your doubles partner, who would it be and why?

I'd go with Pete for his all around net play.

Although I'd love to play with Connors too..... :)

Somewhere there's a video of Sampras and Mac playing doubles together in Davis Cup against Switzerland. (I wonder if the young Fed was watching?)

How's that for a stellar doubles team?

Pete and Mac went on to win it a terrific comeback from two sets down: 6-7(5) 6-7(7) 7-5 6-1 6-2.

Is that the one Mac mentions in his book where he had to get Sampras really wound up to turn the match around?

I think this is a no brainer... there was no better doubles player than McEnroe in his time. No only did he have perhaps the best pair of hands ever in the game... he had a unique understanding for the game of doubles.

His partner Peter Fleming (yes I know... who...????) I think once said Mac could win with a fire hydrant as a partner. Hmmmm.. Peter you pretty much were one.

Mac certainly has an incredible doubles intimidation aura. I'd hate to have to face him in doubles.

If it was for my life, I'd take Mac as my partner.

Outta the ones listed, I go with McEnroe. I agrre that he had the best hands, his style was MADE for doubles play, he had his head around the game better than any other man.

The only other player I would pick would be Martina Navratilova. I think she was a better doubles specialist than anyone ever. I would take her over Johnnie Mac if I was playing a collge doubles team. I just think she found ways to win no matter what. Don't get me wrong, I think JM would be a more powerful player... but I think MN would still get it done.

Hell... I tell you THAT would be one helluva doubles team!!! Johnnie Mac and Martina Navratilova!!! Whew! I would pay money to see them play in a GS even at their current age.

Didn't she win a GS mixed title here awhile back with one of the Bryan twins? Help me out, y'all...

Yes, she won it (USO) at age 50 in 2006 with Bryan Bo.

I didn't think of her when thinking up this fail thread, and I agree with all you say.

She is amazing.

i would not want John McEnroe or Jimmy Connors as a doubles partner -- EVER.

Can you imagine what would happen if you failed (to put away an easy shot)? they would crucify you with their words and body languages.

Stefan Edberg would be my first choice and Pete Sampras would be my second choice because they aren't as temperamental as John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. Some people say Edberg is Mr. Nice guy.

See, I want to enjoy what I'm doing out there. Winning sure helps that likelihood. So does not being mortified by my own partner's behavior. Mick is right on the money. Edberg will make my job easy and and keep me from wanting the court to open up and let me drop through from shame. but I do think Martina would accomplish the above and be able to laugh.

Ah, Mick, you swiped my answer. McEnroe was the greatest doubles player I've ever seen (haven't seen 'em all, of course), but I only have so many hours left in my life, and I'd rather spend them with people of the sort Edberg appears to be.

Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan would be two other people that might be considered as well. Frew McMillan was incredible at the net with his handed everything.

But from my experience... no one was better at doubles than Mac, he was quick around the net... great variety in his serve that forced you to return to certain locations. He also had a knack for the doubles, plus he was unorthodox which always makes an opponent more difficult to deal with.

Absolutely agree has to be Edberg:)

He won lots of doubles titles, and if he had carried on playing doubles, he would have without a doubt been the best doubles player ever!

By the way, well done on reaching 5000 posts:shock:

(And as a special prize for this, I'm willing to buy all your Connors racquets and shirts off you for an extra special price:)

Connors was a good doubles player and actually won many doubles titles early in his career!

Whereas Sampras was never a great doubles player, but he is getting lots of votes just because he has more fans:(

McEnroe because of all of the choices he's the one who seems to
love doubles de best.
Another plus besides his skills, i think he was patient with his partners,
Peter Flemming was not a super player. The best doubles team was McEnroe and anybody else

LOL. As soon as I read that, I thought this was going to be the DC match with Pete. One of the most all-time exciting doubles matches. The crowd was hysterical, and Mac was on fire verbally and physically. That was the match where Mcenroe SCREAMED profanities in the locker room when they were down, trying to get them pumped up. Then Agassi, Courier and everyone else, cheered wildly from the bench, as Mac/Sampras took the match, and even Pete was out of control (um...for Sampras) by his own admission. Poor Hlasek though....a genuinely nice guy....Mac screamed at them to....

McEnroe in the hope that he promises not to put my life at risk if i missed some volleys...
also would not like it if he continuosly gave me some "friendly" advice like some of my doubles partners

Nice to see the mention of Hewitt and McMillan. Here are a few others from another generation to choose from:

Stan Smith
Bob Lutz
Eddie Dibbs
Harold Solomon
Ilie Nastase
Roscoe Tanner
Vijay Armitraj
......any others?
