Jura -- very interesting and many thanks for going to the trouble of posting this. Other than out and out volleyers, most racket grips are size 3. Most racket weights are either around 12ozs or less. Many of the players seem to be playing with rackets that are about the weight of the rackets they appear to be playing with eg Davydenko and Djokovic.

Regarding the grip sizes I'm not that sure that all of them are correct. In the list are just indicated the grip sizes written on the rackets. But as we know lot of players have customized grips, some of them even with half grip sizes.
Regarding the weight I was also surprised that some players really use quit light weighted frames. But still lot of them have very heavy sticks, (look at Blake!).

How much weight, on average, would you say is added when you add strings?

From what I've seen on my racquets it adds around .5 ounces, but it depends on the string type and gauge, although I wouldn't expect it to vary too much.

I've been messing with those numbers to convert them to the inches, ounces, and points Headlight measurements that I'm more used to and here are some interesting numbers:

Nadal's racquet unstrung is 11.3 ounces and 8 pts. head light. Agassi's unstrung is 12.1 ounces and 8 pts. headlight. Gaudio's is 12.8 ounces and 11 pts. head light. Moya's is 10.8 ounces and 8 points head heavy.

Wow. Awesome post.
The balance seems to average between 30-32. What does that mean in Tennis Warehouse terms (points Head light, even, Head heavy)?

nice post Jura!!!!

Blake and gaudio´s racquets are the heaviest (364 and 363 grs.)...
And moya´s racquet is really light...and head heavy

how many grams in an ounce??? i did my own vague math and came to about 25 grams. but that's either wrong or far too imprecise.

does anyone know???

and curious as to balance, but doesn't it matter how long the racquet is???

echo others and say thank you for posting this.

This page can convert grams to ounces:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/7116/jv_gr2oz.html

Actually, Daniel Nestor had the heaviest at 375 grams (13.2 ounces) unstrung! That racquet was also 15 pts. head light unstrung.

Balance does have to take into account the length. You figure the center point of the racquet. Then the balance point. If the balance point is towards the handle from the center then the racquet is Head Light. If the balance point is towards the head from the center then it is Head Heavy. Each 1/8 of an inch from that center is one point. So, if a racquet balances one inch towards the handle of the center of a racquet then that racquet is 8 pts. head light.

my math on head-light and head-heavy for the more extreme players =

daniel nestor 29.5 cm balance, 69.3 cm length. so middle = 34.65 cm, so 5.15 cm head light, 2.54 cm per inch. so 2 inches head-light. a point = 1/8 inch. so 16 points headlight (sorry, did someone say this earlier).

carlos moya 36.6 on 68.5. so, 36.6 on 34.25 = 2.35 cm headlight. so 0.9 of inch. so 7 points head heavy.

hope those are right.????

Moya's racquet is somewhere between 7 and 8 points head heavy. ...and that's unstrung! How head heavy is it strung!?

Man, Nestor's racquet must be almost 14 oz. strung!! How does he get that racquet up in position for all of those quick volley exchanges at the net?

For those like me who are used to ounces and such here are the stats on Daniel Nestor's racquet (the heaviest racquet on this list):

13.2 ounces unstrung, 15 pts. headlight unstrung, standard 27", strung with Babolat Thermogut/BB Alu Power at 57 pounds mains and crosses.

hey, i was going to start that exact thread.

but as a layman who plays some tennis, i always thought the whole light racquet is more maneuvrable argument didn't make huge sense.. the theory is fine but even the heaviest racquets are pretty light in the grand scheme of things.

So given that all the rackets are at least 68.5 cm (middle 34.25) and most of the balance points are 30-32 then one conclusion (from this layman) is that most pros use head-light rackets (unstrung) in a range of 13 points to 7 points.

How many points does the average string shift the balance towards the head?

Now, if that's true then when a pro adds lead to 3 and 9 then they must be adding a similar amount inside the handle to keep it head-light right?
Or have pros mostly stopped adding lead tape at 3 and 9?

Thanks all!

As far as I know Fed never uses the official string service at a tournament.

One thing about the specs posted is that we don't know whether the models that they use are stock to start with. So if a player's racket only weighs 10ozs before he puts the lead where he wants it the amount of lead added is much greater than we are thinking is the case. In a way it makes sense to me that this is what would happen because it gives the player the chance to customise his racket much more flexibly for the conditions. I would love a 10.5 oz Prestige Classic that I could add lead to according to whether I was playing on clay or a hard court, and according to whether it was the middle of winter or not. It would never weigh more than the stock PC available to the public, and usually less. But the extra weight where I wanted it on that racket as and when I wanted it would be a dream.

Hey crosscourt: TFight 325 is a great racket, isn't it?! Did you customized it? Mines are 348 gramms without strings.

i found it solid and stable enough that i didn't have to add lead to mine. nice frame. not very popular in my neck of the woods so they are going cheap at the pro shops!!!

Jura -- I like Prestige type rackets and the TFight 325 is the best that you can get of that type at the moment. I haven't really customised it at all. I love the fact that I can play it stock without a dampener.

What I love most is the 1 cm extra length. So I dn't have to enlarge it as my older sticks:)

nestor's racket balance is 29.5cm, right? well then 29.5 from the center? like the other guy said. well, if 2.54cm is one inch, them 29.5cm = 11inches. if one point = 1/8 inch then 11inches = 88points!! well, as i understood reading what Ash Doyle wrote: "Balance does have to take into account the length. well, then nestor racquet is 88points?!?!? please, somebody explain me

That's pretty faulty. In that case, you'd see negative numbers pertaining to balance points that are on the other side of the frame's midpoint. Also, in that case, *all* of the numbers would convert to an exteme points figure. Usually, when you arrive at such grotesque numbers, it means you're doing something wrong. A metric balance point is measured from the butt end of the frame and taken unstrung unless told differently.

To convert from points head-light/head-heavy to metric balance, not only do you have to perform another step than you did, but it's so much simpler to keep with metric measurements alltogether. All you have to realize is that a lower number = more head-light, etc.

Ash Doyle

I appoligize my description wasn't worded well. For the example, if the balance is 11 inches, that is 11 inches from the butt, that puts it 1 1/2 inches on the head-light side FROM THE CENTER. That would be about 12 pts head light.

Sorry I didn't make it clear which number I meant to be in relation to the center.
