Cindy are you playing 7.0 mixed at all? Have our teams played yet? If not we could both come to our matches in the pink dresses!
Our teams haven't played yet, and I don't know if I'm in the line-up. When we have a line-up, I'll e-mail you if I'm playing.
I will not be wearing a shrug over it!
Excuse me for sounding dumb, but what is a "shrug". I thought shrug was a verb.
It's a sweater that doubles as a boob sling.
boob sling
All righty. Now we're talking. All I need is a rose in my teeth!
And just for fun . . .
Here's a new offering from Tail:
And below is a pic of the back:
Bummer.
The search for the perfect red dress continues . . .
Hi, ladies (and the few male lurkers!)
Just stumbled on this thread (and it's Sat night w/hubs out doing community service...NOT court-ordered, mind you). It's been a hoot. Last time I wore a dress on court, I was pregnant. Really, really pregnant.
Funny (ironic) story...it was a cast-off from my partner who is several inches shorter than me and only a few pounds heavier. It was...too long on her...but perfect for me and my basketball sized belly.
Dealing with some tougher financial times atm so I haven't been able to do a decent shopping spree. So I'll just keep looking at the thread...and dreaming.
But my standards are fairly tough. I've got no boobs (despite nursing two babies) and no butt. Tall and skinny. And that makes for a rough sell. I also insist on having a decent place to stash an extra ball and I hate lollies. So, I'm mostly in separates with built-in shorts.
Keep posting those cool pics.
Oh, my... Seriously?
Those are all very nice dresses. Just curious which size did you get? :twisted:I'm so excited! I now own a tennis dress.
I got this little number here at TW for -- wait for it -- $15. It's a Yonex from the 2007 US Open series, and they just happened to have one in my size.
I wore it yesterday at practice because I've never worn a dress before. It felt OK, except for one thing. I got a whole lot more sunshine up my skirt when the wind blew than I am used to.
The other cool thing was that there were four guys playing on the court next to us. They were maybe 3.0s. As they were leaving, one of them asked me: "Are you an instructor?" Ha! Must have been the dress!
Anyway, I ordered pretty much every dress TW stocks that looked like it might look good on me, and I learned a few things.
First, dresses by Tail are very loose and not as fitted as I would like. They kind of hang straight down from the upper back to the butt and come off looking a bit boxy on me.
Second, I was very disappointed in a Reebok dress because the picture made it look like it had little mesh cut-outs on the back. In fact, they are rubbery appliques that made me look a bit reptilian:
I am still on the fence about this Yonex dress. It is very cute, but I wonder if it is a bit juvenile for someone who is my age:
Anyway, I think I may start moving toward dresses. They are very cute and fun, and there are no issues with weird-fitting skorts.
One gripe I have, however, is about the shelf bras. The blue Yonex, for instance, arrived with a shelf bra with cups, and the cups were all bent up. If someone came up with a dress with a removable shelf bra, I'd be a fan for life.
I have the Adidas dress, and I tried the Tail dress on this past weekend. The Tail dress is actually the better dress. On the Adidas dress, the pleated area is very baggy compared to the other side of the chest - it looks like some kind of failed experiment. On the Tail dress, both sides fit equally well, and the pleats fit snugly against the body. The bodice just doesn't look lopsided in the way that the Adidas dress does. And - bonus - you can actually wear your regular sports bra without it showing because of the asymmetric neckline. This is very bizarre. It's almost identical to an old Adidas dress, except done much more poorly.
I don't know... I know someone (peripherally) who is a clothing pattern maker, and she has a term for clothes that only have detail on the front: "coffin clothes." People do see us all the way around! I think it would be better if the trim wrapped around the body going across and down the back, tapering off fairly quickly. It might cause the dress to look a little less like some kind of fairy heat sink.Yeah, I know. I just do not understand this at all. Skirt would be OK, but putting those layers on the boobs *and* the back is just not on.
Also, the Adidas dress is designed to pool around the waistline. WHAT!?! Is anyone on earth actually calling for that "feature"? Not good. I wouldn't even own the Adidas dress, except that a bunch of my friends had swapped it among themselves, certain that it would look good on SOMEONE's body type - but it didn't. It doesn't even look good on Ivanovic. I kept it because it was comfortable, lightweight, matched my Interclub team's colors, and um... it was free.
I also tried the Lacoste dress that Stosur wears (in white with blue trim) and was surprised that the material was so thin - on TV it looks like a traditional pique knit, though I assumed it was more technical than that. They didn't have my size anyway, not that I would have bought it at retail.
And I tried on the white Sharapova "wedding dress" (Lawn Dress) - I actually liked it a lot, but again the store didn't have my size and it was too tight. If they'd had one size larger I would have gotten it, even though they only had it in white. I would LOVE it in black. Even with it being too small, everyone was commenting on how pretty the dress was. I just can't do the sausage casing thing.
I also got the Adidas Fall Adilibria skort in white, with the "Ultra Beauty" tank. The fabrics on these are very silky. Normally I would have gotten the skirt in a darker color, but this fabric has so much drape, the skirt hangs straighter than most skorts, and I felt like it looked better with the light on bottom/dark on top. I wish they'd had the cap sleeve top, or that they'd had my size in the pink Adilibria dress - the XS they had on the rack looked beautiful.
The South Carolina Combo state championships were in the Charleston area this weekend, so I tried some on at the Family Circle Tennis Center shop, and some at the Daniel Island Club.Cghipp,
Where were you to be trying on all of these dresses? I envy you!
Yes, I am eying it!The pink Adidas is on sale at TW for $49 or something. Such an awesome deal if you really like it.
Well, the two dresses do have one thing in common, and that is neckline detail that brings the focus upward. I'm pretty... "stramlined" up top, let's say, so I have some flexibility there. The Sharapova dress has some of the bust-area details that I like without being low-cut. And the empire waist style also brings the eye level up, and of course is very flattering to the hips. The Sharapova dress is definitely more body conscious than some of the other styles. I have a bit of a waist but am relatively straight through the body, except that I do have a slight swayback and a full seat. As long as the dress doesn't dip too low in the front or pool too much in the middle of the back, I can usually do OK with it. But the drop-waisted dresses do need some neck/bust area detail or flattering waist seaming/trim, or else I will look like a brick.I'm curious. The Sharapova lawn dress and the Tail blue/gray dresses are totally different cuts from the Adidas. If the empire waist works for you generally, how is the fit in these longer-waisted dresses?
It was the white one. I couldn't give you a good estimate of the hip measurement, because I would probably want two full sizes larger than the one I tried. (Not sure, because I haven't tried Lacoste clothing before and there were only a couple of sizes left: teeny and tiny.) I will say this: My first comment after trying it on was "How does Sam Stosur look more feminine than me in this dress?" (Just kidding - I think she looks fantastic.) That is a good example of a dress that is too straight up and down for me. I don't think the purple one would do anything for me either. How was the hip measurement in the Stosur dress? I love that dress. It looks so athletic and really shows off the shoulders. I fear it would be too tight in the butt no matter what I did. (I assume you mean the white version of this.)
I forgot to mention that I also tried a couple of pieces in the new Fila Fall Center Court group (tank and skort). I didn't love the colors, and Fila clothes in general seem very unforgiving in the hips to me. When I think of some of the great players they sponsored, I always wonder why they didn't cut their skirts just a little more A-line, to be more flattering, because I think they make most people look dumpy. However, if they had had the black dress in this group, I would have definitely tried it on.
Thanks. Shoutouts always appreciated.Welcome aboard!
Keep your eyes peeled. I have purchased dresses here at TW for $15. If I see any screaming deals, I'll shout at ya.
Hmm. Can't say I've ever heard the words "perfect" and "figure" used when discussing me. LOL. Even though I'm quite skinny, with few curves (top or bottom)...I usually have to wear a medium (broad shoulders and super-long torso). As for the compression shorts...guess I'll have to buy some of those but I've found that their legs are usually too long to go under the dresses. I'll keep looking for some that work. I've got a pair of "yoga" shorts that will do the trick in a pinch...You sound like you have the perfect figure for some of the cami dresses or long-waisted dresses. And remember, you stash the ball in your compression shorts when you wear a dress, no problema.
I'll have to suggest one of these to me team. Oh wait. What team is that? Not sure what's gonna happen to me come year-end rating time....not sure there's a 4.0 team willing to pick me up (should it come to that). I come with significant baggage (read: kids).Anyway, my team is having another "theme" night. The theme is Dress To Impress, where we all wear dresses or bling or whatever cool stuff we have. Last time saw some zebra print, patent leather, and quite an assortment of earrings and bracelets. Me, I'll be wearing that nail-head studded black dress.
Why bother? Just go for it...and work it off, on court.Provided I can stay away from the Halloween candy for two more days.
you know what would resolve the racerback/cami bra problem? a halter bra. does tt sell those? I can't find one. the only ones I can find are on cheerleader uniform sites.
I would do the racerback, too. I don't know why they don't sell a bra to go with these dresses, so that you can wear them without losing the cool details you bought the dress for in the first place!
That issue with the extra fabric under the keyhole is an error that should have been corrected in the pattern making process - that's ridiculous. It reminds me of a dress I saw on a mannequin that had a bunch of fabric pooled in the center of the lower back. I tried it on, and guess what? The fabric pooled there. Seriously, people? Are you designing for some subset of players who have a mid-back hump or a concave butt?
I do love the argyle nailhead pattern on that dress. For my body type, it would be more flattering with the argyle pattern on top with a plain black waist and skirt. I like the "3 Diamond Tank" in that line, too.
Here are a few styles that I would love to try on. The horizontal stripes at the empire/waistline of this DTL dress should actually narrow the waist, but it might be a bit too dressy for me:
*scratches head*AQ, in my parts most women at any level have kids...do you really think that will hamper your efforts to find a team should you get bumped? I hope not! Would seem a bit unrealistic IMO.
*hugs* (Isn't there one of those emoticons here?)AngleQueen, I swear by the Bolle compression shorts.

Cindy -- whose kids have decided they are too old for trick-or-treating and who therefore does not have 10 pounds of random candy in the house to tempt her
Yeah, I can't figure out why the designers dont understand that we wear bras for more than one reason. Support, of course. But also to avoid this: "Look! Her nips are THERE and THERE!" And that issue is the same no matter what size you are.I'm going to take the black nailhead dress with me to a sports retailer and see if I can solve the problem. I guess the dress manufacturers would reply, "Oh, but we *do* sell a bra that is perfect for the dress. It is the shelf bra!" Doh!
Not on me it wouldn't! But I take your point - I didn't realize that wasn't a stretch fabric. I just bought Calvin Klein sweater tee with tiny nailheads around the neckline, and I'm interested to see how those embellishments hold up in the wash. It seems like they'd hang on to a woven better than a knit, but maybe that depends on whether they actually pronged or if they are heat-applied.I think they were smart to keep the nailhead pattern on the skirt. If you put it on the boobs, you would have all sorts of curves to deal with...
True - not to mention the wristbands, and various and sundry braces, wraps, and supports we may be wearing at any given moment. Actually, my backhand may be all the dressing down I need.I think the fact that you put tennis shoes and socks on and then pop a visor or bandana on your head dresses these outfits down enough.
True. This. We call it a "headlights" problem around here. The only ones who don't seem to have the problem are the ones who've had, um, work.Yeah, I can't figure out why the designers dont understand that we wear bras for more than one reason. Support, of course. But also to avoid this: "Look! Her nips are THERE and THERE!" And that issue is the same no matter what size you are.
Quick tip: turn it inside-out to wash and try it in a lingerie bag on a gentle cycle. If they don't make it through that...they weren't gonna make it. Fingers-crossed for ya!Not on me it wouldn't! ROTFLMAO. Oh my gosh. But I'll tell ya. My partner and I count how many games we consider ourselves behind...by how many medical aids appear on our opponents. The ladies who play through the pain...are some playahs!True - not to mention the wristbands, and various and sundry braces, wraps, and supports we may be wearing at any given moment. I think, Topaz, you're north of me. I'm down in Richmond.
And...I probably should have been a bit more specific. I'm a stay-at-home mommy...of two pre-school aged children (4 and 2). I also have an indifferent/unsupportive spouse who does "get" me playing so much tennis (even though I'm lucky to be on-court twice or thrice a week). So, I usually have to play a weekday league AND can only play home matches (at best). Our club does have reasonable daycare...actually, it's disgustingly cheap. But my 4-year old is in pre-school on Wed/Thurs/Fri and the 3.5s here play on Wednesdays. I have to drop eldest off at 9am...and matches start at, guess what, 9am. Can't very well be in two places at once. I do have some options; my 78-year old father can sometimes drop off (or pick up) eldest...but (shhhhh....) he still works, sporadically, part-time and doesn't always know his schedule.
Didn't mean to tell such a long story...but it is a bit more complicated than...I have kids. In and of itself, I agree, it shouldn't be a problem as most of my contemporaries have school-aged kids...or even better...college-aged one. LOL. I'm a late-in-life Mommy. Had my first at 40. You do the math. Not complaining, really; just tellin' it like it is.
I do often worry that the "tennis" community is leaving behind the mothers/parents of young children. Babysitters/child care can get expensive and when what one is pursing is merely a "hobby," it's often hard to justify.
Thanks for hearing me out. *sigh*
Why not just bedazzle "THESE ARE MY BREASTS" across the bodice?
What are the good folks at Tail thinking these days?
I agree about the drawstring. If you take that small feature away, that skirt would be amazing. I would be willing to suffer the drawstring, though. It is placed so it wouldn't add to the gut size.
I have to say, I am a sucker for metal detailing (bars, studs, etc.) on tennis clothing. One of my first skirts had metal studs running up both sides. I got so many compliments on it because of the studs.
I can't abide sequins and rhinestones, though. Go figure.
