Our teams haven't played yet, and I don't know if I'm in the line-up. When we have a line-up, I'll e-mail you if I'm playing.

I will not be wearing a shrug over it!

Excuse me for sounding dumb, but what is a "shrug". I thought shrug was a verb.

It's a sweater that doubles as a boob sling.

Oh. OK. I was trying to think of something that was sports related.

Hmmh. Doesn't look like something very practical for tennis. I'm wondering what happens when you serve or hit an overhead while wearing one of those.

hahahahaha!

I never quite thought of shrugs as something for tennis. I looks like it might be cute though. Course around here it's either too hot to wear sleeves or cold enough to need a real jacket never in the middle. That shrug would not keep the cold out around here lol

Bummer.

The red dress came, and it has to go back.

The color and fabric are great. The black trim along the bottom is spectacular. The craftmanship is good. The length is spot on. The fit is just right in medium.

The problem is the black yoke in front. It . . . it just does not work. There is a seam where the yoke attaches to the dress, and that seam is clearly visible as a ridge along the breast. And the yoke with the gold bedazzling just doesn't strike the right note. If this dress instead had a simple scoop neck with a bit of black trim, it would be perfect.

Since it is so showy but isn't perfect, it has to go back. The search for the perfect red dress continues . . .

Hi, ladies (and the few male lurkers!)

Just stumbled on this thread (and it's Sat night w/hubs out doing community service...NOT court-ordered, mind you). It's been a hoot. Last time I wore a dress on court, I was pregnant. Really, really pregnant.

Funny (ironic) story...it was a cast-off from my partner who is several inches shorter than me and only a few pounds heavier. It was...too long on her...but perfect for me and my basketball sized belly.

Dealing with some tougher financial times atm so I haven't been able to do a decent shopping spree. So I'll just keep looking at the thread...and dreaming.

But my standards are fairly tough. I've got no boobs (despite nursing two babies) and no butt. Tall and skinny. And that makes for a rough sell. I also insist on having a decent place to stash an extra ball and I hate lollies. So, I'm mostly in separates with built-in shorts.

Keep posting those cool pics.

Keep your eyes peeled. I have purchased dresses here at TW for $15. If I see any screaming deals, I'll shout at ya.

You sound like you have the perfect figure for some of the cami dresses or long-waisted dresses. And remember, you stash the ball in your compression shorts when you wear a dress, no problema.

Anyway, my team is having another "theme" night. The theme is Dress To Impress, where we all wear dresses or bling or whatever cool stuff we have. Last time saw some zebra print, patent leather, and quite an assortment of earrings and bracelets. Me, I'll be wearing that nail-head studded black dress.

Provided I can stay away from the Halloween candy for two more days.

I'm so excited! I now own a tennis dress.

I got this little number here at TW for -- wait for it -- $15. It's a Yonex from the 2007 US Open series, and they just happened to have one in my size.

I wore it yesterday at practice because I've never worn a dress before. It felt OK, except for one thing. I got a whole lot more sunshine up my skirt when the wind blew than I am used to.

The other cool thing was that there were four guys playing on the court next to us. They were maybe 3.0s. As they were leaving, one of them asked me: "Are you an instructor?" Ha! Must have been the dress! :)

Anyway, I ordered pretty much every dress TW stocks that looked like it might look good on me, and I learned a few things.

First, dresses by Tail are very loose and not as fitted as I would like. They kind of hang straight down from the upper back to the butt and come off looking a bit boxy on me.

TWPEPED-1.jpg

Second, I was very disappointed in a Reebok dress because the picture made it look like it had little mesh cut-outs on the back. In fact, they are rubbery appliques that made me look a bit reptilian:

RWSURD-PK-1.jpg

I am still on the fence about this Yonex dress. It is very cute, but I wonder if it is a bit juvenile for someone who is my age:

Anyway, I think I may start moving toward dresses. They are very cute and fun, and there are no issues with weird-fitting skorts.

One gripe I have, however, is about the shelf bras. The blue Yonex, for instance, arrived with a shelf bra with cups, and the cups were all bent up. If someone came up with a dress with a removable shelf bra, I'd be a fan for life.
Those are all very nice dresses. Just curious which size did you get?

This is very bizarre. It's almost identical to an old Adidas dress, except done much more poorly.

TWDBDD-1.jpg
I have the Adidas dress, and I tried the Tail dress on this past weekend. The Tail dress is actually the better dress. On the Adidas dress, the pleated area is very baggy compared to the other side of the chest - it looks like some kind of failed experiment. On the Tail dress, both sides fit equally well, and the pleats fit snugly against the body. The bodice just doesn't look lopsided in the way that the Adidas dress does. And - bonus - you can actually wear your regular sports bra without it showing because of the asymmetric neckline.

Also, the Adidas dress is designed to pool around the waistline. WHAT!?! Is anyone on earth actually calling for that "feature"? Not good. I wouldn't even own the Adidas dress, except that a bunch of my friends had swapped it among themselves, certain that it would look good on SOMEONE's body type - but it didn't. It doesn't even look good on Ivanovic. I kept it because it was comfortable, lightweight, matched my Interclub team's colors, and um... it was free.

The Tail dress doesn't have that god-awful waistline pooling thing going on, and I would have gotten it except for one thing: the color is a bit more grey than in this photo, and it didn't do anything for me. One thing I didn't like about the Tail dress, though: Do you see the twp spots on the left and right hem, at the dropped waist, where the stitching seems stiff and stands away from the body? It looked like that on, too. Like I had some kind of pointy body mod on each hip. It's possible that would soften after a few washings, but I doubt it.

I also tried the Lacoste dress that Stosur wears (in white with blue trim) and was surprised that the material was so thin - on TV it looks like a traditional pique knit, though I assumed it was more technical than that. They didn't have my size anyway, not that I would have bought it at retail.

And I tried on the white Sharapova "wedding dress" (Lawn Dress) - I actually liked it a lot, but again the store didn't have my size and it was too tight. If they'd had one size larger I would have gotten it, even though they only had it in white. I would LOVE it in black. Even with it being too small, everyone was commenting on how pretty the dress was. I just can't do the sausage casing thing.

I didn't manage to find a dress - the selection was too picked over. I ended up getting the Nike Holiday Accuracy knit skort in Red Plum - VERY flattering on pretty much everyone I've seen wearing it. It is a bit low-waisted but not as much as the Nike pleated skort I have, that always feels like it's sliding off.

I also got the Adidas Fall Adilibria skort in white, with the "Ultra Beauty" tank. The fabrics on these are very silky. Normally I would have gotten the skirt in a darker color, but this fabric has so much drape, the skirt hangs straighter than most skorts, and I felt like it looked better with the light on bottom/dark on top. I wish they'd had the cap sleeve top, or that they'd had my size in the pink Adilibria dress - the XS they had on the rack looked beautiful.

Yeah, I know. I just do not understand this at all. Skirt would be OK, but putting those layers on the boobs *and* the back is just not on.
I don't know... I know someone (peripherally) who is a clothing pattern maker, and she has a term for clothes that only have detail on the front: "coffin clothes." People do see us all the way around! I think it would be better if the trim wrapped around the body going across and down the back, tapering off fairly quickly. It might cause the dress to look a little less like some kind of fairy heat sink.

This dress was very strange, indeed. I don't know what the designers were smoking.

I actually really like that fabric. It just feels so silky and drapes so well. The purple dress is slightly thicker but still light enough to wear in hot weather. Only if I could get my hands on the white version...

I haven't liked or bought anything from Nike for over a year. Not crazy about their fabric.

Cghipp,

Where were you to be trying on all of these dresses? I envy you!

The pink Adidas is on sale at TW for $49 or something. Such an awesome deal if you really like it.

I'm curious. The Sharapova lawn dress and the Tail blue/gray dresses are totally different cuts from the Adidas. If the empire waist works for you generally, how is the fit in these longer-waisted dresses?

How was the hip measurement in the Stosur dress? I love that dress. It looks so athletic and really shows off the shoulders. I fear it would be too tight in the butt no matter what I did. (I assume you mean the white version of this.)

The South Carolina Combo state championships were in the Charleston area this weekend, so I tried some on at the Family Circle Tennis Center shop, and some at the Daniel Island Club.

Well, the two dresses do have one thing in common, and that is neckline detail that brings the focus upward. I'm pretty... "stramlined" up top, let's say, so I have some flexibility there. The Sharapova dress has some of the bust-area details that I like without being low-cut. And the empire waist style also brings the eye level up, and of course is very flattering to the hips. The Sharapova dress is definitely more body conscious than some of the other styles. I have a bit of a waist but am relatively straight through the body, except that I do have a slight swayback and a full seat. As long as the dress doesn't dip too low in the front or pool too much in the middle of the back, I can usually do OK with it. But the drop-waisted dresses do need some neck/bust area detail or flattering waist seaming/trim, or else I will look like a brick.

How was the hip measurement in the Stosur dress? I love that dress. It looks so athletic and really shows off the shoulders. I fear it would be too tight in the butt no matter what I did. (I assume you mean the white version of this.)
It was the white one. I couldn't give you a good estimate of the hip measurement, because I would probably want two full sizes larger than the one I tried. (Not sure, because I haven't tried Lacoste clothing before and there were only a couple of sizes left: teeny and tiny.) I will say this: My first comment after trying it on was "How does Sam Stosur look more feminine than me in this dress?" (Just kidding - I think she looks fantastic.) That is a good example of a dress that is too straight up and down for me. I don't think the purple one would do anything for me either.

I forgot to mention that I also tried a couple of pieces in the new Fila Fall Center Court group (tank and skort). I didn't love the colors, and Fila clothes in general seem very unforgiving in the hips to me. When I think of some of the great players they sponsored, I always wonder why they didn't cut their skirts just a little more A-line, to be more flattering, because I think they make most people look dumpy. However, if they had had the black dress in this group, I would have definitely tried it on.

You seem to have a very good eye for this stuff. "Dumpy" is exactly the word I would use to describe Kim Clijsters black/blue dress from the US Open. Kind of like it was sewn by . . . someone like me who can't sew and so doesn't want to take any chances. The result was very much like a brick, lacking in shape.

Anyway, I am gearing up to wear my new bling-covered dress tomorrow night, and of course there is a problem:

DTLB3DD-5.JPG

See the keyhole in the back? See the wrinkled, scrunched area beneath the keyhole? On me, the scrunching is very pronounced. It just doesn't lie flat. I can't think of a thing to do about it.

But what's really getting me is a bra problem. If I put on a regular racer-back black bra, you lose the keyhole completely and you see that big ol' bra instead. When I try it with a cami strap, it's worse because you see straps and hardware and a big center back patch of bra.

The dress comes with a shelf bra. Which means I could . . .

:: shudder ::

go commando with no bra.

I don't think I can do it. I would worry about it the entire match, what with all the bouncing. And it's November. It might be cold in there . . .

:: shudder ::

I think I'd better just slap on a regular racerback bra and deal with it.

I would do the racerback, too. I don't know why they don't sell a bra to go with these dresses, so that you can wear them without losing the cool details you bought the dress for in the first place!

That issue with the extra fabric under the keyhole is an error that should have been corrected in the pattern making process - that's ridiculous. It reminds me of a dress I saw on a mannequin that had a bunch of fabric pooled in the center of the lower back. I tried it on, and guess what? The fabric pooled there. Seriously, people? Are you designing for some subset of players who have a mid-back hump or a concave butt?

I do love the argyle nailhead pattern on that dress. For my body type, it would be more flattering with the argyle pattern on top with a plain black waist and skirt. I like the "3 Diamond Tank" in that line, too.

Here are a few styles that I would love to try on. The horizontal stripes at the empire/waistline of this DTL dress should actually narrow the waist, but it might be a bit too dressy for me:

This Court Blu dress would either accentuate or invent a waistline:

Hmm. Can't say I've ever heard the words "perfect" and "figure" used when discussing me. LOL. Even though I'm quite skinny, with few curves (top or bottom)...I usually have to wear a medium (broad shoulders and super-long torso). As for the compression shorts...guess I'll have to buy some of those but I've found that their legs are usually too long to go under the dresses. I'll keep looking for some that work. I've got a pair of "yoga" shorts that will do the trick in a pinch...

Ha! I think they call it a Quasimodo cut! :)

Yeah, it is kind of weird. I come across things all the time and I wonder, "Who on earth is built like this?" And then I think, "And what buyer staked her career on buying hundreds of these for retail?" Designing/fitting for mass market must be so much harder than it looks, judging by the failure rate.

I do love the argyle nailhead pattern on that dress. For my body type, it would be more flattering with the argyle pattern on top with a plain black waist and skirt. I like the "3 Diamond Tank" in that line, too.

I think they were smart to keep the nailhead pattern on the skirt. If you put it on the boobs, you would have all sorts of curves to deal with. The pattern might stretch and bunch, and that would be unfortunate. Also, the mesh is not a stretch fabric. My main concern is I hope the mesh is strong enough for tennis. I would hate to have the mesh catch on my racket or something.

Here are a few styles that I would love to try on. The horizontal stripes at the empire/waistline of this DTL dress should actually narrow the waist, but it might be a bit too dressy for me:

That's a striking dress.

You know, I no longer worry too much about things being too dressy (within reason). When I see a woman wearing something really nice, I think "Wow, that looks really nice!" I don't think "Where does she think she's going?" I think the fact that you put tennis shoes and socks on and then pop a visor or bandana on your head dresses these outfits down enough.

AngleQueen, I swear by the Bolle compression shorts. They are the only ones I have found that don't ride up, and the length works under everything. The material in the compression skorts I have tried can be so flimsy that it doesn't hold the ball securely. When I practice, I can jam 4 balls under these Bolle shorts on the left hip and they don't fall out.

They also last a long time. I just had to toss a pair in the trash because they developed a crotch hole. I have probably had them for 2 years. Not bad for $19.

Well, how about that?

I found that Champion makes a cross-strap cami-strap bra that has its own keyhole in back. Under Armor also makes a cami-strap bra that goes straight across the back, but it was more expensive. So I went with the Champion.

What will they think of next?

I think, Topaz, you're north of me. I'm down in Richmond.

And...I probably should have been a bit more specific. I'm a stay-at-home mommy...of two pre-school aged children (4 and 2). I also have an indifferent/unsupportive spouse who does "get" me playing so much tennis (even though I'm lucky to be on-court twice or thrice a week). So, I usually have to play a weekday league AND can only play home matches (at best). Our club does have reasonable daycare...actually, it's disgustingly cheap. But my 4-year old is in pre-school on Wed/Thurs/Fri and the 3.5s here play on Wednesdays. I have to drop eldest off at 9am...and matches start at, guess what, 9am. Can't very well be in two places at once. I do have some options; my 78-year old father can sometimes drop off (or pick up) eldest...but (shhhhh....) he still works, sporadically, part-time and doesn't always know his schedule.

Didn't mean to tell such a long story...but it is a bit more complicated than...I have kids. In and of itself, I agree, it shouldn't be a problem as most of my contemporaries have school-aged kids...or even better...college-aged one. LOL. I'm a late-in-life Mommy. Had my first at 40. You do the math. Not complaining, really; just tellin' it like it is.

I do often worry that the "tennis" community is leaving behind the mothers/parents of young children. Babysitters/child care can get expensive and when what one is pursing is merely a "hobby," it's often hard to justify.

Thanks for hearing me out. *sigh*

Yeah, I can't figure out why the designers dont understand that we wear bras for more than one reason. Support, of course. But also to avoid this: "Look! Her nips are THERE and THERE!" And that issue is the same no matter what size you are.

Not on me it wouldn't! But I take your point - I didn't realize that wasn't a stretch fabric. I just bought Calvin Klein sweater tee with tiny nailheads around the neckline, and I'm interested to see how those embellishments hold up in the wash. It seems like they'd hang on to a woven better than a knit, but maybe that depends on whether they actually pronged or if they are heat-applied.

I think the fact that you put tennis shoes and socks on and then pop a visor or bandana on your head dresses these outfits down enough.
True - not to mention the wristbands, and various and sundry braces, wraps, and supports we may be wearing at any given moment. Actually, my backhand may be all the dressing down I need.

True. This. We call it a "headlights" problem around here. The only ones who don't seem to have the problem are the ones who've had, um, work.

Quick tip: turn it inside-out to wash and try it in a lingerie bag on a gentle cycle. If they don't make it through that...they weren't gonna make it. Fingers-crossed for ya!

*sigh*

Ah yes, I remember now!

No worries...most of the women on my teams who have kids have either older kids and/or very supportive hubby (often who also plays). We've had older kids sometimes be dragged along to matches, but we immediately dub them as our mascot and good luck charms!

And the fact that you're a late in life mommy gives me some hope!!!

Do you ever get a chance to play any of the tournaments in Richmond? There are some pretty big $$$ tournaments down there if I'm remembering correctly!

I wore the black nail-head dress last night. It was really comfy and I thought it looked boss.

Now I have to wash it. I have a front loader, so I'll do it by itself on delicate.

Light a candle for me, will ya?

Thought I'd throw out things that kinda float my boat.

Normally won't go for anything with Maria's name on it (out of principle)...but I like(d) this skort. Too bad it's already gone. Never would have bought it at MSRP but I should've been watching the sales. I don't get the retro-pleat comeback. Not for me. But I think these gentle ruffles might work.

oh, I am still lamenting not having bought that white pleated k-swiss skirt with the black grosgrain ribbon while I had the chance. I love love love the new interpretations of old classics.

They're not doing women's clothes yet, but I love the relaunch of the 80s brand Boast:

(I bought a shirt from them -- small in pale blue -- to wear with that awful lacoste skirt I bought that's so white you can't wear it with anything else that's white. I'm a small (skinny, tall-ish) girl and after shrinking the shirt in a very hot dryer, it fits exactly right. I love it.)

Why not just bedazzle "THESE ARE MY BREASTS" across the bodice?

What are the good folks at Tail thinking these days?

And who places a seam right across the bustline? Owwwwww!

Wait, is there actually someone on this board whose breasts sit up high enough for this seam to be an empire waist?

I think we need to spend a bit of time dissing Tail.

Worse is the side view, which has a distinctive Housecoat vibe to me:

Tail characterizes this dress as an athletic cut. Uh huh.

This black Breast Bedazzled dress goes for $76, which is the highest price you'll usually see on a Tail dress. The other dress for $76 right now is this one in white and pink:

It's an interesting pricing strategy. The less desireable it is, the more it costs!

Sorry to be so hard on Tail, but I think they (and Bolle) have the strongest workmanship and fabrics. So when they put out a dress that is disappointing, I feel disappointed.

Seems to be a bit of an identity crisis over at Tail. Their core business is the club player who is willing to pay a bit more for classic, well made tennis clothing. They are trying very hard to be more edgy, and their efforts have produced some rather bizarre pieces.

The housecoat cut on the bedazzled dress would actually work for me. If you take away the studs and do it in a fun pattern instead of a solid black, I would be all over that dress.

That pink and white dress is hideous. I can't think of anyone who would look good in it.

This skirt with the pointless ribbons and off-center drawstring baffles me. I'm trying to make my waistline smooth, why would I want to add a drawstring? There is nothing trendy or chic about this. It just looks poorly conceived and executed. And of course we have the painful breast seam tank in red too.

Nothing here that makes me loosen the purse strings...

I agree about the drawstring. If you take that small feature away, that skirt would be amazing. I would be willing to suffer the drawstring, though. It is placed so it wouldn't add to the gut size.

I have to say, I am a sucker for metal detailing (bars, studs, etc.) on tennis clothing. One of my first skirts had metal studs running up both sides. I got so many compliments on it because of the studs.

I can't abide sequins and rhinestones, though. Go figure.

Detailing? Did you like Serena's denim getup at the USO a few years ago? I looooved the boots!

I thought the boots were cool. Then again, I wear black shoes most of the time, so I am a weirdo.

Cindy -- whose black shoes now have a hole in the toe and are slick on the bottoms
