Racket review – Kneissl white star 2011 version:
I thought you might all be interested to read about my playing experience with the 2011 version.
I’ve followed the TW review format, hope you find this useful. Obviously it’s just my opinion…..and also my first review so go easy :)

Groundstrokes – Score 89
Moving over from a recent series of Dunlop’s (most recently the max 200g), I was initially worried that the lighter weight of the racket would be a problem, but I was proved wrong. The lighter weight allowed me to swing faster, and generate great power with flatter forehands and massive topspin if I wanted that as well. I like ‘em tight, so to speak, so it was strung at 67lbs with Toalson synthetic tournament something or other. I don’t use a dampener, and it is still very comfortable at those tensions. Control is great, was able to hit deep, yet it retained the ability to really generate speed due to the aerodynamic bumper guard and even balance. Also found backhand slices very penetrating and not floaty, although I could hit those as well if I needed to, with good bite on the ball. Proper preparation and stroke mechanics helped me a lot, whereas with the max200g the weight of the racket would do some of the work for you (but that’s a legend).

Volleys – score 86
I’m more of an all court player, although naturally I stay back a little more than charge in. However I found the maneuverability of the white star really helped me get down low and still hit crisply and solidly. Very enjoyable, especially overhead where the extra racket speed allowed extra pace on the smash. Lovely touch too on angles and drops.

Serves – 88
The white star has allowed me to add maybe 10-15 mph to my serve coming from the max, due to increased racket speed. All serves are able to be hit, its especially good out wide on the forehand. Lots of slice and topspin available easily due to the maneuverability.

Returns – 86
Even though this isn't a very heavy racquet in comparison to some others, it certainly has characteristics of one, and you would think it heavier than its 300 grammes. It is very stable and permitted me to return deep on either wing, slicing a la Nadal to near the baseline. Taking the ball early with a good slap is also possible, and I was able to return flat and hard, or topped and dippy which was very nice against an incoming s+v’er.

Overall – 87
I’ve always been a fan of old school tech, but have taken a plunge here with the 2011 Kneissl white star. Not regretted it one bit. My arm is in better shape than after years of POGs and max 200gs, not aching the next day from the heft. It’s also always very interesting the comments you get from other players, e.g. where did you get those etc.

I’m in the uk so don’t know the comparisons to US ratings, but UK-wise I’m a 40 yr old playing national club league singles and doubles.

Racket specs are (pinched from Kneissl catalogue):
Länge | lenght [mm] 695
Rahmenhöhe | frame profile [mm] 23
Gewicht | weight [g] 300 / ±5
Balance | balance [mm] 318 / ±5
Schlagfläche | headsize [in´´] 98
Steifigkeit | stiffness [RA] 68
Bespannung | stringing [kg] 22 - 30

Hope you found this helpful and interesting.

Is it 16 or 18 mains?

How did you derive your rating score numbers?

strings are 18 mains by 19. sorry should have said.
ratings are just my own opinions after reading lots of reviews, and comparing internally mentally to other frames with which i have played.

I bought a Black Star 2011 and White Star 2011 from Kneissl North America. You have to call them they are not on the website. They may be totally gone now. They came brand new and pre-strung. I really like both of them, and used them a lot indoors over the winter. I have Gamma ZoTour Rough 16 in the Black, and Lux BB Ace 18 in the White.

Which one do you use the most ? What if any differences in the way the BS and WS play ?

I have two (2010)Black Stars I got from Kneissl NA (the last they had), and one on the way from Kneissl-UK. Have also played with the 2007 versions of the Tom's and the Red Star and liked them both, but find the current Black star to be the most impressive stick I've ever used.

I've also played with the whole 2011 range except the new white star tour. White star is my favourite, for the weight, but the black is next in line, it also is evenly balanced, and very manoeuvrable. Let me know if anyone needs info on where to get these frames easily.

I guess mine are the 2010s actually - I don't think there is a 2011 version out there.

The Black is the one I play the most. Easy to maneuver and generate spin, and surprisingly stable for a lighter racquet. Now, if I'm hitting with a really good player, I really need to time my swing right, because the racquet is too light to really block a shot back with any kind of pace.

The white seems to have a bit more mass and is stiffer. You need a longer swing to get that one to work. But, when you connect and do it correctly, it's great. As I develop my game (started 2 years and 3 months ago and am up to a 3.5 already), the white is what I will probably move to. I'm keeping those sticks for sure though - they are nice.

I don't know why Kneissl-NA won't get and stock racquets ...... the folks at Kneissl-UK have them and are quite willing to ship to customers in the USA. I just received my third one (1st from UK) today .... the weight and balance matches the other two (purchased over 2-3 months here in the USA) ... my contact there was Tim McCann at : tim@kneissl-uk.com, they are eager to sell racquets and I think would come here if they could find a market..... to bad TW can't hook-up with them as a supplier as they seem to be able to obtain product from Kneissl even tho Kneissl is undergoing hard times.

Great review Michael, I agree the white star is a fantastic frame. Made the switch from K90 about 9 months ago and haven't looked back. I have mine strung with volkl cyclone at 52 lbs and the power and control is tremendous! In spite of the dense string pattern access to spin is great whilst at the same time providing very good control on flat shots. Another outstanding feature is the stability, which I suspect is due to the use of kevlar, plus i have mine weighted up with 20g in the handle

an update to this

recently added 4 grams of lead to the 12 o clock position, 2 technifbre 2gr strips on each side of the 12. not a lot of extra weight, but what a difference. loads more solid, deeper sweetspot, easier depth and plowthrough. its like a different racket.

Hey Mike, it's Lee here (Rhiwbina Tennis). My brother Ian is still using the old White Stars and he loves them. One now has a crack though and he's looking for a couple more. Do you happen to know anyone who might be selling? Seems like the Kneisll website has sold out.
