If djokovic and rafa get to the final..

Who do you think will win? Im a big rafa fan but djokovic is playing extremely goo and i think the match would be straigth set win for djokovic or maybe nadal will tank in the semi

It could get really ugly, if that happens. Djokovic has beaten Nadal playing worse than he is now.

That said, I'd be surprised if Nadal makes the final given his current form. At this point, Nadal'd do well to play himself cautiously, avoid injuries, get rest for a final onslaught next year.

If Nadal does make the final, it would mean he's playing some decent tennis (relatively). Still, Djoko matches up so well with Rafa, and has the physical (not to mention mental) advantage...

Hard to see how Rafa would manage to win a single set against Nole.

Rafa would get destroyed if he made the final, which is unlikely. He would need to get through a few tough 4-5 setters most likely, and for any other player that would be a factor, but not for Rafa. And if he does make it, he's a terrible matchup with Djoker.

As it is now, Novak would win in straights...Nadal is in a bad place mentally and seems to have already laid out a plan for 2012 whilst Novak is brimming with confidence and his game has no holes at the moment...

In a way it makes me wish there were genuine, bitter rivalries in the sport...someone who looked to troll the tennis world and Novak's near perfect season with a "FU@K that guy, Im not going to let him win this title at all costs" mentality.

Nadal's history on hc is he can't repeat as champion. He better get this monkey of his back by winning this tournament. Otherwise he will be remember as a great player who can't defend his title. A big hole.

Didn't Djokovic just retire in a final a week ago with an injured shoulder?:lol:

I hope Murray destroys him again.

But if Fed gets to the final, then Rafa will have a field day :)

Not necessarily! Don't be so cocky. A few months ago you were saying Nadal was the Messiah in disguise. Things change in tennis quickly and you can never be sure about anything.

Well Rafa is full of surprises. As you well know he can play some dreadful matches and come through supreme. I have seen this now for so many years and wonder how he does it - but he does

I doubt that will happen this year. His form reminds me of what he looked like in 2009,except for he was faster back then. That should tell you how slow he has been this year since he was dragging it pretty bad at the USO that year.

If Rafa and Novak play here, it could get ugly really quick. Novak knows he is deep inside Rafa's head now, and Rafa's form is slipping day by day...which is not good.

If they meet in the final, I think Novak will be looking to put the final nail in Rafa's coffin. A heavy loss here could set a big downward spiral mentally for Nadal, who already looks fatigued playing year after year at the top of his game. If he loses badly, does he actually believe he would be able to turn it around? Novak takes his W and USO titles away from him.

This year has also been a shell shock for Rafa in general, with the unexpected rise of the Djoker, and Rafa has stated himself, that Novak is the real deal.

oh, thankfully we are all in agreement that finally the real deal is here. Last ten years we've been watching that Swiss guy who obviously was not.

I agree with this pretty much.

Which is why, as crazy as it sounds, it might be prudent for Nadal to lose before the final. Another loss to Djoko at the slam level will be very debilitating. Once you lose the mental edge, it is extremely hard to get it back. Those losses at IW/Miami (both matches where he could've won) end up costing Nadal dearly..

Sentinel - Roger, Rafa have been the real deal for many years. And for many years, they dominated, without a player who has been able to do what Novak has done. They might have been expecting Novak to win a bit and there, but he is the outright number one now, hence the Real Deal, just like they have been.

TennisFan3 - I don't know if Rafa would lose on purpose before a meeting with Novak. He will try to fight, it is who he is. He is just is a bad place with the whole Novak thing.

Those defeats in IW and Miami left some mental scars for sure.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!!

Are we talking about Rafa the beast, the mental giant, the guy that plays every point as if it's match point? The guy that recovered from a broken foot, broken knees, ruptured abdominal muscles? The guy that scares his opponents ****less with his jumping incessantly at the coin toss, the zigzag bursts of running before the match starts? THAT GUY???????

Oh ye of little faith! Rafa is par for course in this USO, he's biding his time as usual. Don't worry, he'll hit top gear in week 2, he's already shown a hint or 2 - the 131mph aces have appeared already.

You read it here first.

I hope you are right, by golly, I hope you are!

If Rafa loses again to Novak in the final he will be remembered as the player who went from mental giant to mental midget in less than six months time.:(

Fed says to Rafa - "Don't worry man I've got this "- proceeds to take Novak down again!

Two proven champs then meet in the US Open final Fed and Rafa. Who wins, I do not care, adore them both!

Where is Novak while final match is going on? Not laying an egg, but sitting inside one! Ha! Ha! (sorry I just had to go there :???:)

The saying "From hero to zero" will be the most over-used terms from his detractors. me thinks.

Well, he's started pretty much how he started last year. Just hope he can improve through the tournament like he did last year as well...

I think he could do with a couple of tough 4/5 setters to galvanize his shots and tactics before he comes up against the big guys. It worked out that way at the French. Obviously it's a different situation at the US completely, but he needs to replicate that trajectory again.

If Rafa serves big he can win, especially if he can sink his teeth into rallies with his forehand...but I would favor Nole slightly if money were on the line at this point, because of their recent history.

(Nadal only served at 116mph 1st serve average in last year's US Open final. In the 1st round of US Open this year he served 115mph on average. It's more about hitting the groundstrokes flatter I think)
