Can someone recommend a good instructor in San Diego

I've been trying to find the type of instructor I want lately but it doesn't seem to be working out. I've had 5 lessons in the last 3 weeks from 3 different instructors but they are all kind of the same. They are good and I'm learning some things and getting a good work out but I'm looking for someone who can help me improve the technical aspects of my strokes.

The lessons I've been taking from the 3 different guys are pretty much the same: volleys, drills, some groundstroke rallies and then serves but they all pretty much are centered on how to set up a point and strategy. That's great and all and I'll probably still take those kinds of lessons but I"ve been hitting the ball poorly lately and not one of these guys have tried to correct my strokes even once. And during the lessons I"m always asking questions like 'how do i improve that shot because i always put that shot in the net' or 'how's my follow through on that shot because I don't feel i'm doing it right' or 'i cant seem to hit down the line on that last shot. are my feet positioned wrong?' or 'Do i have the correct contact point on my open stance forehand'? etc etc. and all i get in response are 'You're thinking too much' or 'just hit it' or 'don't worry about that.'

Today I asked my instructor why is it that when i use a western grip i get a lot more power than when i use my regular sw grip and does that mean im doing something wrong with my sw because it should have more power than a W grip ... is my swing wrong for a SW grip? not pronating correctly? etc He just said 'Don't use a western'. I repeated the same question 3 times and he just wouldnt give me any data besides 'A Western grip has too much spin'. It was frustrating.

So the point of this thread is does anyone know of an instructor in San Diego that will teach me how to actually improve my ball striking? Are there any MTM instructors in San Diego? I want someone who will look at the mechanics of my swing and wrist movement and pronation and shoulder rotation and footwork etc and tell me what to change or what I'm doing wrong ot a better way to do this and that and feed me balls etc.
Anyone? Help me please!

Thanks.

I don't know where you're at but if you're in North County I know a GREAT pro in Encinitas. He's an older guy but I've been though a handful of them myself lately and he is AWESOME. I guarantee he can help with whatever problems you might be having. PM me if you're up in this area.

In interested too. I'm in Rancho Bernardo, close to Rancho Peñasquitos. If there was someone like Cheetah is describing, who is knowledgeable about stroke production, grips, pros and cons of different techniques, and can analyze a player's strokes and give constructive advice for improvement, I might be interested in a couple of sessions for my son.

Call Brad Humphries at the San Dieguito Tennis Club. He or 2 of the other pros there can all help you guys. They aren't cheap though. Brad charges $70 an hour. But if you have a particular "problem" with a stroke, I guarantee he can identify it and tell you how to fix it in one lesson.

You are in luck. Oscar Wegner, the originator of MTM, lives and coches in San Diego. He can be reached via his website www.tennisteacher.com.

How did it go? What instructor did you decide with?

I'm looking for help with my serve. Any instructor recommendations in San Diego would be appreciated.

I refer you to #7 above. You won't regret it!

In the mountains?

I "commute" 700 miles between my mountain retreat in Mount Shasta (Northern Cal) and San Diego, where I teach tennis at SDSU.

I'm working with Oscar right now.

In a word?

U-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e.

I looked oscar's site but all i could find for him were week long sessions
at something like $1500 or something like that. Do you know if he offers
single lessons?

Thanks

Just call/contact Oscar. Tell him you want to do a single lesson, and see, then arrange what you need. I've seen him take 'non-hitters' to surprisingly good, very quickly.

Are you currently his student? When you said you were working with him, I did not know if it meant as a student or as an assistant coach. And these other people you have observed - did you observe them while you have been a student (like, were they your co-students)?

I'm a student, training.

Just seen other people there as I arrive, hit with, or if I hang out a bit, after, from one girl who is rejoining the WTA (she was 80's in the world before a layoff), to absolute beginners who's progress is astounding.

Oscar Privates

If you're a San Diego local and there's any chance you could do a week with Oscar himself, at what seems to be a very good price ("A typical instruction rate is $1,200 for the week. Weekly rates are based on 15 hours of one-on-one training with Oscar."), you should do whatever you can to make that happen.

You will undoubtedly receive information about you and your game that no one else can give you. Even if you wind up going on to another coach or pro, you will learn what MTM is all about ... on-court ... from the source!

It appears to me that if someone commits to 15 hours of lessons a week, they are far more serious than your average club player. That alone will account for a lot of dramatic improvement. Most others will take 1 hour of lessons a week and hack out a couple more hours with their buddies. So, not sure whether it is an apples to apples comparison with other coaching situations.

If a former WTA player is refreshing her skills, she probably had all the fundamentals down long before, and also has an inherent athletic ability. Again, not an apples to apples comparison with other coaching situations.

Yeah, but keep the rates confidential and don't post negative comments if you don't like his teaching. Positive comments are OK. It is not fair to turn this site into a yelp.com kind of rating of tennis coaches. Again, not saying you will do it - just mentioning it for the others too.

I'll post what happens. good or bad.

I love it when i hear from people who have taken lessons from Oscar. Funny how they are very impressed and can't believe how good of a instructor he is.

Kind of different from the naysayers that you hear from on this site quite often. You know the ones that have never taken a lesson from him but sit back and criticize one of the best tennis teachers out there.

What do you think sureshs? Does this make you cringe to hear that a real life student is totally impressed with his instruction?

Sandiegoman and Cheetah, did you ever call Oscar?

I called him and left a message but he hasn't called me back. Right after that I found some guy who's quite a bit better than me so I've been playing him for last 2-3 weeks. I'm going to call again first thing tomorrow morning though.

I really need some lessons. The guy I have been playing has been killing me.

I have watched Oscar coach (for a very short time) and he seemed very sincere.

I think he can bring adult beginners to speed quicker than others, because at least he is aware of what others do wrong. And those who are willing to take 15 hours of lessons a week are really sincere, while it might be a case of garbage-in-garbage-out with other coaches.

We only debate what he has said about certain things (or others have said on his behalf), not his coaching skills. That could be entirely different from his other stuff. Also, he was a touring pro, and that itself lends a level of credibility not found in other coaches who may be 4.5 hacks max.

Just trained with Oscar this evening. His number was changed recently, and maybe the website didn't note it? He asked me to post, as he said he'd had no calls on a 'new' lesson:

six won niner......7 niner 5.......9 zero 95

Now that the intended person has seen it, please remove the phone number. Robot crawlers will be eating up that information as we speak and Oscar will be spammed to no end with calls.
