Poor Nadal only knows few English words and one of them is History. He will give you that as the answer for a dozen more questions.

I have absolutely no idea what they're talking about :(

The 2 biggest football rivals in Spain are Real madrid and Barcelona.
Ralph supports Real.
Barcelona has been pwning Real the past few years.
Barcelona pwned Real again a few days ago.

Tipsy trolls Ralph.

El Clásico is the football (soccer) match between Real Madrid and Barcelona; the biggest rivalry in Spain and probably the biggest match in club football right now. Rafa is a Real Madrid fan, but Barcelona have won most (all?) of their recent matches. So Tipsy is winding him up because his team aren't doing so well.

And he's doing an excellent job, I have to admit. That History Channel jibe had me snickering. :)

Haha, Real Madrid as brought to you by the History Channel: Celebrating Decades of Past Success.

I've got to say I'm surprised Nadal allowed himself to be forced into such an intimate position with Tipsy, especially after all the discord over that gun photo.

I suppose Nadal knows Tipsy better than we do, which might give him more insight into how joking or serious Tipsy was about the gun photo. :) It's different when you're acquainted with someone... you can read their tone better than fans who have never met them, you know?

Anyway, that was very funny. :)

What discord? :)

From the above link, I'm guessing there was little to no backlash from Nadal himself. If a few TW posters, and/or the mainstream media want to get in a frothy lather about it that's their business, but it seems like in the ATP locker room it wasn't a big deal.

Thanks for the context, but I don't get the History channel juxtaposition.

I mean, I kinda get it, Nadal used the word history ha ha...

But is the history channel big in Europe or Australia, or is the tipster tailoring the joke for an American audience.

Fyi, I'm high on cold medicine right now.

As in, the team is history. Best days are behind them. They're old news, belonging on the History Channel with all the other news of bygone days.

Hilarious vid.

But Tipsy, you really shouldn't tease a supporter of a team a few days after his team loses to bitter rivals AGAIN. I grew up with the stunning Madrid team from the end of the 90's(when they had peak raul) and what they are doing against Barca is simply  for their history.

Imagine the dominance Djoko had over Rafa in 2011 but over a few football(soccer) seasons.

Good to see Toni(Barcelona fan) having a good laugh.

The rivalry has deep historical connotations...

Real Madrid supported the fascist dictator Franco whereas people from Barcelona fought against him...so it goes beyond football...

Also, Real Madrid had one of the greatest teams of all times in the 50s and has generally been more successful than Barcelona in the past...

However, the past few years, Barcelona has been beating them, and everyone else with ease, leading many to consider the current Barcelona to be the best football team of all time...

That's what FC Barcelona's historians say. The reality is that the Real Madrid president was executed by the fascists during the Spanish Civil War.

Try again.

If Barça was a symbol of dissent to the Franco dictatorship, Real Madrid was the regime's — and the Generalísimo's — favored team. (Santiago Bernabeu, the former club president for whom the Galácticos' stadium is named, even fought with Franco's army during the Nationalist invasion of Catalonia).

I do know Spanish football, you know. All I'm saying is that it's not as clear cut as FC Barcelona's historians like to make out. People involved in Real Madrid were executed by the fascists, including the president. I can't stand either FC Barcelona nor Real Madrid. Real Madrid are mercenaries personified, and Barcelona have always had this annoying superiority complex and love playing the martyrs.

Time magazine belongs to Barcelona FC? That's shocking news!

No, but no history is neutral. It's a fact that the fascists executed some Real Madrid personnel in the civil war.

In the time immediately following the civil war, Franco had much closer ties to Atletico Madrid than he did Real; this was because Atletico had founding members from the Spanish airforce. But as Real Madrid became dominant, Franco allied himself to them chiefly because of their effectiveness as a propaganda tool.

Well, this is how I understand it anyway.

I'm sure the tipster's joke didn't have near the historical context that some on this forum have alluded to!

Some very interesting facts and or suggestions here.

You Europeans definitely take your 'football' seriously!

Oh, football is very tribal over here in Europe.

This is right.

But the idea of people from FC Barcelona "fighting" Franco or being some kind of anti-dictatorship club is just ludicrous. Franco helped the Real Madrid, but FC Barcelona still was the second most powerful club in the country and one of the most powerful clubs in Europe. It's not like they were some idealistic semi-clandestine club made of heroic prosecuted footballers playing on some isolated dusty field and being harrassed by policemen.

No Clint Eastwood's movie here.

Football it's the most similar thing to religion in Europe I think. Specially when religion is losing importance.

No quotes needed for football, it's played with the feet BTW.

now it's obvious that after Lopes is such a joke body with Tipsy, the too serious Nadal will not ignore this in their match and will come up full power to punish him...

What do you mean by "your football"? There is only one football. And one sport that is mistakenly called same.

Laughable. You must be from Madrid

FC Barcelona was on top of the list of organizations to be purged by the National faction, just after communists, anarchists and independentists.[9][12] During the Franco dictatorship, most citizens of Barcelona were in strong opposition to the fascist-like régime.

Ooooooooh, see what Tipsy should have said was after asking Nadal why it's 'classico' if Barcelona wins every time, then he should have said I guess your matches with Nole can also be called classics since the result is known beforehand :)

I think this is really funny.

for the americans who don't know soccer:

madrid and barcelona are the biggest rivals in spain.

madrid used to be the better club for decades but in the last decade (especially last 6-7 years) barcelona really whiped the floor with madrid.

that's why he called the former best club (madrid was like the yankees of soccer) "history".

Yeah, besides Nadal doesn't seem to be the type to get offended that easily by some stupid joke. I don't for sure of course but I get the impression that Nadal is a very laid back guy off court, completely different than the gladiator he is in a match. I know a few people like that, whose personalities differ quite a bit depending on whether they're at the job or at home/relaxing with friends etc.
