Michael Llodra has apologised after being fined $2500 for the racial taunting of a Chinese couple.

He said this to the Chinese news site SINA.com: "I love Chinese — I can totally make love with a Chinese girl."

What a guy.

Now he's going to have to have to apologise to his family for announcing he's open to an affair. But I hear infidelity is par for the course for many Gallic men.

Oh, now I'm doing it, I'm no better than Llodra. Apology forthcoming.

i think that is a weak apology. the fact that he hasn't yet done what he said could do, is a good example. lol

don't worry: i'm sure his opponent of the day (aka ernests stockholm gulbis) will be pleased to join them in order to adjust the proportions to a more 'sexually equitable' balance, in order to prevent mika from getting another fine... ;)

Llodra probably said it that way to distinguish the individual from the crowd. It doesnt come across as racist.

I am actually more interested to find that Gulbis (prostitute connoisseur/tennis hobbyist) has some kind of rooting section that follows him around in the US.

Gulbis has this boyish, innocent charm that many women love. Kind of safe and charming kind of man. Lots of women go for that.

The pharmaceutical industry is now pushing the drug Propranolol as a possible treatment for racism. Sounds like a joke but that's what they are saying (an the name, Propranolol, sounds almost like laughing gas).

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/9128888/Heart-disease-drug-combats-racism.html

A common heart disease drug may have the unusual side-effect of combating racism, a new study suggests.

Volunteers given the beta-blocker, used to treat chest pains and lower heart rates, scored lower on a standard psychological test of "implicit" racist attitudes.

They appeared to be less racially prejudiced at a subconscious level than another group treated with a "dummy" placebo pill.

Scientists believe the discovery can be explained by the fact that racism is fundamentally founded on fear.

Propranolol acts both on nerve circuits that govern automatic functions such as heart rate, and the part of the brain involved in fear and emotional responses. The drug is also used to treat anxiety and panic.

Experimental psychologist Dr Sylvia Terbeck, from Oxford University, who led the study published in the journal Psychopharmacology, said: "Our results offer new evidence about the processes in the brain that shape implicit racial bias.
Related Articles

"Implicit racial bias can occur even in people with a sincere belief in equality. Given the key role that such implicit attitudes appear to play in discrimination against other ethnic groups, and the widespread use of propranolol for medical purposes, our findings are also of considerable ethical interest."

Two groups of 18 participants took part in the study. Each volunteer was asked to undertake a "racial Implicit Association Test" (IAT) one to two hours after taking propranolol or the placebo.

The test involved categorising positive and negative words, and pictures of black and white individuals, on a computer screen.

Differences in the time taken to carry out the tasks provided the basis of the result.

More than a third of the volunteers had a "negative" IAT score, meaning they were biased towards being non-racist at a subconscious level. This was not seen in any member of the placebo group.

Propranolol had no effect on a different measure of "explicit" racial prejudice, religious and sexual prejudice, or prejudice against drug addicts.

These were tested using a "feeling thermometer" psychological tool used for assessing explicit prejudice. Volunteers were asked to rate how "warm" they felt towards different groups on a 10-point scale analogous to a thermometer.

The scientists wrote: "The main finding of our study is that propranolol significantly reduced implicit but not explicit racial bias."

Despite the study's small size and limitations, the researchers believe it raises important ethical and philosophical questions.

Co-author Professor Julian Savulescu, from Oxford University's Faculty of Philosophy, said: "Such research raises the tantalising possibility that our unconscious racial attitudes could be modulated using drugs, a possibility that requires careful ethical analysis.

"Biological research aiming to make people morally better has a dark history. And propranolol is not a pill to cure racism. But given that many people are already using drugs like propranolol which have 'moral' side effects, we at least need to better understand what these effects are."

But Dr Chris Chambers, from the University of Cardiff's School of Psychology, said the results should be viewed with "extreme caution".

He said: "We don't know whether the drug influenced racial attitudes only or whether it altered implicit brain systems more generally.

"And we can't rule out the possibility that the effects were due to the drug incidentally reducing heart rate. So although interesting, in my view these preliminary results are a long way from suggesting that propranolol specifically influences racial attitudes."

I truly believe that are Westerners who still view Asians and Africans as objects, even in the modern, more politically-correct world. The women are for them to sexually exploit and the men for cheap labors. Whether Mr. Llodra is one of these, only he knows.

Perhaps the 'I can totally make love with a Chinese girl' comment is his way of expressing the more common 'some of my very best friends are Asians' expression among white Americans.

Either way, Mr. Llodra has to deal with it himself, whatever the 'it' is.

Political correctness is both an over-used and abused word.

There are still white men (and some non-white ones) with guns telling the non-white world what is in their best interest.

If that excites people they should pursue their interest, but they've left M. Llodra far behind in doing so.

Llodra denies making racist remark May 24, 2011

"Mohammed is a friend, we are always having a laugh together off the court," he said.

"My witness at my wedding is Congolese; my nanny is from Kabylie (in Algeria). There is zero problem with Mohammed, there is a lot of respect between us."

This just goes to show that Llodra is not only a racist, he's an idiot too. Sometimes the words don't convey the tone of the speaker. Read everything out there and you will get the full story. Read only what is posted in this forum and you will only get a small snapshot. I'm done with this.

Not sure which world you live in. In China the workers are exploited for their "labours" by their very own people, same goes with women etc. When it comes to money you can leave race at the door.

This is what Llodra claims to have said to the Chinese journalist who produced the fanciful version published here:

"Je suis allé présenter mes excuses aux Chinois par l'intermédiaire de ce journaliste, mais on s'est mal compris tous les deux. Je ne lui ai pas dit ce qu'il a rapporté. Je lui ai dit: "Qu'est ce qu'il faut que je fasse pour vous prouver que je ne suis pas raciste? Il faut que je fasse l'amour à une Chinoise?" Ce n'était pas péjoratif, c'était une forme de respect."

I totally agree that's a mistranslation. If that's true that's a big mistake by the journalist. That says the following (for those that don't speak French):

"I went to apologise to the Chinese via this journalist, but we misunderstood each other. What I said to her was "What do I have to do to prove to you that I'm not racist? Do I have to make love to a Chinese girl?". This wasn't meant in a disparaging manner but was a form of respect"

For me that's quite different to "I love Chinese — I can totally make love with a Chinese girl."

I'm not sure if that's in addition to what he said or otherwise but it's not the translation of the French above that's for sure.

To be clear I'm in no way condoning the initial incident. Personally I think he was wrong and should just come out and apologise for it. I don't think he's a racist personally having met the guy once but I do think this particular comment was out of order.

Here is a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Reagan, and former editor of the Wall Street Journal -- not exactly a marxist, I imagine -- describing some of the things that are "going on in the world".

Focusing one's indignation on an outburst by a clumsy tennis player is an effective way of diverting that indignation from issues that deserve it (including racial ones) and feeling good about your moral uprightness at the same time.

Nice dodge.

Just because there may be problems of greater magnitude in the world does not mean that problems of lesser magnitude should not be addressed.

Yes, you see in today's politically (unrealistic) world you are not allowed to say anything, in particular the following :

- As a man I would like to spend time with a woman (unacceptable for OBVIOUS reasons)
- Western men are not allowed to mention their admiration for Asian women (form of racism) Ironic thing is if a western male was to say he has no inclination for Asian women he would also be pulled up for being racist, logical right ??

Unfortunately that is the world we live in.

This whole issue has been interpreted politically by most people here.

The purported comment is a grossly scandalous case of bad reporting that has further politicised the issue.

He was fined correctly for abusive behaviour but most don't want to leave it there.

Good point, and true, but it doesn't make the history of white men raping other cultures around the world any less true. Colonialism is not all about money. While it is true that there is less evidence of racial oppression going on in today's socities, the ideology that fueled colonialism still exists in many cultures and families.

Also, I hope we can exchange and debate ideas without making things personal. I live in our world, with a slightly different point of view perhaps...I hope.
