Sampras' tough grass competion is a myth.
I agree completely. Not to mention, he also played on 'easy' grass, a surface tailor made for booming serves. Him winning 7 titles playing in his prime in modern Wimbledon conditions would be a much harder task.

You didn't need to post, we already know.

I went with Fed, he has 9 slams but also the WTF's.

A beautiful and deadly game on the hards, so many videos of OMG shots testifies to the impact his game has had.

Obviously, you don't know! I'm here to change your mind, or grind you in to dust trying.

I like the way you turned the court speed argument on its head here :) lol!

Sure it would be a harder task... Guys grow to play on the conditions AT THE TIME. Chances are Sampras wouldn't play today like he did then.. As most guys wouldn't be able to play the way they do today back in Pete's time

Federer holds the record for most hc titles. With 9 slams, 6 WTFs I don't think it's even an argument as to who's the king of hc. The distant second place is up for debate. I would say

2. Sampras
3. Agassi
4. Lendl
5. Connors
6. McEnroe

I mean, really the answer is completely unquestionable. I just chose my favorite guy. Here is my ranking order:

1. Federer
2. Sampras
3. Lendl
4. Agassi
5. Connors
6. McEnroe

Lol at the 5 ****s who picked Sampras on this poll. They're either on some heavy duty meds or are so up the Fed hating ladder it's worth taking note.

Sampras's biggest rival who also happens to be on this poll has repeatedly put Fed on a different level, no need to look further for a reliable source for this answer than Andre.

Where's the option "Rod Laver", for kiki and Limpinhitter?

Well as far as I'm aware, hardcourts became a dominant surface in the late 1970s when all the tournaments in America switched from green clay to hardcourt to mirror the US Open. I would loved to have seen the likes of Indianapolis and Cincinnati on green clay! But I assume Limphitter is joking when he mentions the Rocket :)

Federer is clear leader here, I would have thought some of the other guys in the poll would have had good mentions, I think the margins between the players are closer than the poll suggests.

Now, I wonder which players in future will be joing this illustrious company? Djokovic so far is the obvious choice but who else? I can't think of too many young up and coming exciting talents on hardcourt at the moment.

Well guys like NadalAgassi and kik despise Federer so it's no surprise they will never vote for him.

Agassi knows best because he played them both in their prime.
"Pete was great, I mean, no question. But there was a place to get to with Pete. You knew what you had to do. If you do it, it could be on your terms. There's no such place like that with Roger.
"I think he's the best I've played against. He does things that others just can't do," said Agassi, playing in his 20th consecutive US Open.

"I've played a lot of them over the years, but there's a safety zone, there's a place to get to, there's something to focus on, there's a way," he said about attacking those other esteemed rivals.

"Anything you try to do, he potentially has an answer for, and it's just a function of when he starts pulling the triggers necessary to get you to change to that decision.
"He plays the game in a very special way. I haven't seen it before."

Waiting for a "Agassi played Federer in his 30's so there's no comparison" comment from NadalAgassi or kiki

Well NadalAgassi and kiki have nothing to support their biased opinion, and they actually think people will buy their story. LOL

Agassi in his 30s also said he was playing some of his best tennis. And after his loss to Roger, he pointed out that if he can play this high level, he likes his chance against anybody(including Pete). I can't find his quote anymore.

Lol dude I know that. It's just that Laver has so much talent in his pinky, according to kiki, that he would have won all the imaginary matches against HC greats like Lendl, Sampras, Federer and Mac.

What post is that? All of my posts are there to be seen and relished by those few members of TT capable of independent, critical thinking, which would exclude you.

WHAT? All of the tournaments turned from green clay to hard courts in the late 70's? That's ridiculous! Where did you get that from?

And, NO, I'm not joking about The Rocket. His best surface was hard courts, and IMO, he has as strong a claim to the greatest player who ever lived as anyone.

Love how this thread completely turned into a grass court debate! Great stuff. :)

To answer the OP question. I can't say greatest, since too many variables come into play. Different generations, changes in equipment etc etc etc. But I will say that Federer is the most accomplished player on hardcourts.

Please refrain yourself from being a fanatic. Laver isn't the best player on hc, clay or grass.

We have many debates about the greatest player on grass, clay and hc, and Laver was NEVER mentioned as the best.

This thread is not about Laver. Stop trolling !

This thread is about the greatest hard court player of the open era. IMO, that's Laver. I understand that you are a severe, OCD suffering, *******, for whom every thread on TT is about Federer. But, please don't tell me what I can and cannot post. You don't have that authority, and you make yourself look like a fool. If you don't like my posts, feel free to ignore them.

Based on what? Your assumptions that Laver would've been successful on hard courts if it was used in more tournaments in his time?

The same way Federer should be in the top 5 as far as best carpet players are concerned, despite him playing maybe 70 matches on the surface, the vast majority of them in his early years on tour.

Because everyone knows Laver doesn't belongs on the list. Come on...he never won a slam on HC and you're trying to compare to guys like Roger who won 9 times ?? Ridiculous, to say the least !

Like/dislike your post is one thing. But wouldn't you rather post something that's worthwhile for other members to read? Frankly, you're not doing a good job.

In the former pro talk forum, Limpin stated that Roger doesn't belong in the top 40 greatest clay courter. Now he wants to crown Laver on hc. ****ism at it's finest !!

TMF talking to himself once again, both under his main username and his multiple aliases that come across even dumber than his main one.

As for best on clay, grass, and hard, well of course ****s will say it is Federer for all 3, which means it couldnt be Laver or anyone else. They even try and argue him as the best on clay amazingly when has only 1 French Open.

I also have a problem with the surface thing. All respect to Laver, but he played on grass and clay only. and as much as I hate comparing different eras, what Fed has done is out of this world.

Obviously this is a lie because you can't list any names.

Just like i asked you on the former pro player talk forum when you stated fed fans claimed Roger > Nadal/Borg on clay. Of course you refuse to answer my post.

This just isn't true, with respect. Laver has around 30 hard court titles on his resume He also won even more titles indoor.

yes, but none of the slams were played on HC at the time. W, the USO and the AO were all played on grass ...

Didn't they play these tournaments on green clay for a few years in the 1970s, then switched to hardcourts in line with the US Open?

Nothing the OP said restricted this selection to Grand Slam tournament play.

Anyway, I wouldn't pick Laver anyway (even though he was a great hard Court player). I would pick Federer. I was thinking of Sampras on fast hard court, but overall Federer.

That just makes it all the more incredible Laver won so many hard court tournaments. Hardly any opportunities and still that successful. It also indicates what most people think, that hard courts would have been Laver's best surface. I dont agree he should be picked the best hard court player though, as he never got to play/win slams on the surface, but it should also end the ridiculous dismissal of his Grand Slams, and the people suggesting they wouldnt have happened with any of the slams on hard courts (nonsense).

No! What tournaments are you talking about? There were some clay court tournaments but most tournaments in the U.S. were always played on hard courts and grass and some indoor carpet.

I'm not making any assumptions. First, Laver won over 30 hard court events in the open era. Second, I personally saw him win one of them, singles and doubles. He was a force of nature. No one played on hard courts at his level. The fact that he had to win what few majors he was allowed to play on grass and clay isn't his fault. If they were held on hard court, his record would have been even greater.
