When Federer Loses a Set Before 3rd Round

Since his first Grand Slam - Wimbledon 2003 - Federer has played 35 Grand Slams.

He has lost a set before the 4th round in 16 of the Grand Slams.

He went on to win the Major that he lost a set in the first week in 7 of the Grand Slams.

In his last three wins at Majors, he lost a set in the first week and went on to win the Major. Nothing to be too concerned about fellow Federer worshipers.

I am not understanding the etymology of your most recent pseudonym for Novak Djokovic.

Please enlighten me?

Don't you know? The interaction of Rolaids and Adderall can lead to deletrious over-stimulating effects in the latter resulting from faster metabolization thus resulting in a more intense but less prolonged "high". Clarky knows this because of her addition to "(N)adderall", thus her aversion to "Rolaids/Tums" and the other various brands of antacids Novak represents.

If Fed loses a set, and Nadal and Djokovic don't, it is real bad news for Fed by the time he faces them. You need to be perfect to beat either of them.

First week form might not be too relevant by the time the QF, SF, and F are played. All that matters is what form the players round themselves into and getting far enough in.

Even if a player loses sets in all his matches, yet still wins, he is a valid champion. Look at RG 09.

I'd have thought blowing the cobwebs out earlier would be the main factor in peaking towards the end of the tournament.

I don't recall Federer trying any less in a match than in the 3rd set earlier. He was in cruise mode almost. It probably means no more than Djokovic's inability to do anything meaningful in the second set of his match until the 9th game.

Fed looks bad right now... Spraying forehands awful foot work and way too many framed shots...

Yeah, the scores look better than the way he's playing. The last time I saw him look this uninterested/sloppy was AO2011. And we all know how well that tournament turned out for him. Though, I'm sure he'll pick it up as the tournament goes on. He didn't drop a set before the semis last year, but dropped five on his way to the title in 2009, so I guess his play now doesn't mean much so long as it gets better with every match.

With that said, even though he lost a set against Ungur, he looked much better against him than he did against Kamke. Ungur was just playing really well late into the third set. Kamke was simply worse than Federer at committing the errors.

All his opponents in the first 4 rounds are win-in-his-sleep type matchups.
Wouldn't be surprised if the focus isn't all there.

Lol Federer losing a set.

Ungur played well. Basicaly played like a man with nothing to lose. He was blasting the ball around. It was awesome. Forcing Federer to make errors, it was a valient effort. He deserved more than a set.

Look, we all know Fed likes to play. He's been known to say things like "I thought I set up the match pretty well" in interviews in the past (last year this was said I think during the US Open match where he lost to Novak because he was surprised by that crosscourt forehand winner and subsequent turnaround from Novak at match point). Basically, he expected another ACE victory with Novak letting that last serve go and bowing out. Unfortunately, he slapped the man in the face at the last second and while I personally think Roger was celebrating in his mind already, he kind of screwed himself by thinking Novak would not just try something.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Roger is sometimes just trying different things to extend a few games out and maybe sometimes just gives up on a set instead of killing himself to come back into it, knowing full well, he'll just break early in the next and try to run away with it. We've seen it before when he plays lesser players and while some can consider it dangerous to play with fire like that, I honestly think the man just likes to be out on the court a bit longer than he needs to be. I think he's comfortable playing 4 (non close) sets if need be. You generally don't see him mess around too much in other tourneys where it's best 2 out of 3. I think between last year and this year, we've seen him not mess around too much with higher ranked and dangerous players. In those instances, if he's too careless, he could screw himself quickly.

The other aspect is, he's making a lot of unforced errors (averages 40) in the past two matches, yet still wins. He said in the interview at the start of RG that he likes 3 out of 5 more because he feels that you can mess up a bit more and still dig it out. This proves it because in 2 out of 3 set matches where he's lost, he made those same kind of 40ish UEs and it bit him.

We won't know what happens with Novak and Nadal until Fed gets to that point in this tournament. I think right now, only the top 3 players are in a battle for themselves, no one else in the rankings is playing at the same level. Also, you guys need to remember the facts (and it has nothing to do with fannism or anything) but Fed's won the most titles this year out of the 3 top guys on tour. Sure, he didn't win a major title, but to have more consistant wins on tour than the other guys speaks for his abilities and skill. Bandwagon jumping fans, as I like to call them, keep hopping from player to player based on how popular or how many major wins they have in a year. I ask you this, would you rather be a constantly hot player for years or be a flash in the pan kind of guy? Novak is good, Fed is good, so is Nadal, but until their careers are over and you look at the bottom line of achivements, all arguments are moot. Enjoy your favorite player and go with that... but for once and for all, stop hopping on the latest and greatest. You're not a true fan of a player if you do that.

I'm happy that Fed has 4 titles already this year and that he is beating the players that he should (except that stupid loss to Roddick), but he's still 0-1 against Nadal this year and 0-1 against Djokovic. No one is doubting that Fed is in the top 3, it's whether he still has it to be #1. I think he does, but that is what he has to prove by winning a Slam or two. Getting to the final at RG should be his goal this year. Whether he wins the title or not doesn't matter, if he can get past the SF that will set him up nicely for Wimbledon and the Olympics. If he loses to Djoko in the semis then regardless of his titles and W-L record this year, it would just confirm that he is at #3, a clear rung below #1 and #2.

He's 1-1 against Nadal.

Do you mean IW doesn't count because it was windy? (Or because Madrid wasn't "real clay") ;)

Well, he made it to the final last year and I believe would have won it had it not been for being jerked around by Nadal and all his **** MTO tactics because he was losing and was hella surprised by the way Fed came out swinging. Basically, I think that final would have gone like the match this year where he beat Nadal by rushing him and playing him in the wind where his bs moonballing grinder-pusher tactics don't work too well. Fed got dealt three mental blows at the French final last year: the MTO, the barely missed drop shot (was it out?), and the rain delay (I think there was one). Anyway, I'm not making excuses because a pro of his caliber should be able to focus better, but I know for a fact that he pulls his hair out each time he has to "wait" to play Rafa. Take a look at his face when he walks out on court against the guy... he's like "Oh great, this should be a fun match, I can't wait to wait..."

Just think of this happy Ungur guy.

He will play on, eventually retire, and become a tennis coach or something. And in his resume he'll have

"Won a set against R.F."

Profit, unforgettable memories, and a story to tell.

Another Suresh gem...SexiRogi lost sets to both Raonic and Bellucci @IW'12 two months ago. Who did he straight-set in the SF? Yeah, your guy! Keep it up, brain boy!

It's not that they don't count - they just count less because they're not Slams. Anyway, Rog is one win away from making the final. Let's see what happens.
