When will Hewitt retire?

After the retirements of Safin (2009) and Roddick (2012), when will this former no. 1 retire?

I seriously do not think Hewitt has any chance to compete with Tsonga, Del Potro, Berdych, Ferrer and the like, let alone the big 4.

I think it is just a matter of time he comes to realize that he is no longer a contender to win a slam, and should just retire.

What do you guys think?

I think that Hewitt is much better than Roddick. Better movement, much better backhand, made more money from Yonex, better wife and children, and his career still keeps going while Roddick is long gone from the tennis scene.

Lleyton is no idiot. He realized a long time ago that he's no serious slam contender anymore.
He's just playing for the love of the game that's pretty much it.
It ain't the money for sure. I mean the guy got enough money that his grandchildren can live like kings.

tough loss to Sexy Radek today. maybe it's time to call it off. Hewitt should keep playing as long as he feels passion for tennis.

Most likely scenario is that Hewitt will play until yet another injury sidelines him. Dude just doesn't know when to hang it up

He loves the game let him enjoy!!!

Exactly.

Jimmy Arias talked about how he regrets retiring too early. He said nothing can take the place of competing at the top level. And he also laughed at his comeback saying that once you retire and get out of playing condition, its nearly impossible to get back. He was saying how he could play one or maybe two good matches, but playing 5-7 (plus qualies) matches in such a short time period was impossible.

Hewitt should retire when he wants to or when they drag him from the court and force him to (ie, his ranking just drops too low and he no longer gets wildcards).

Good on ya Lleyton. Don't listen to these clowns. Keep having fun doing what you love.

Lleyton Hewitt likes the challenge of trying to win matches, of competing, like Jimmy Connors used to do, so I think Hewitt will carry on for a while yet.

If you look at Hewitt's AO, you see what he can still bring. i think it'll take a disappointing AO to make him exit.

When Hewitt does retire I hope he loses in an epic match like when he loss to Nalbandian in the first round of the Aussie open in 2011. Stayed up late watching it.

I also think he has plenty of unfinished business in Davis Cup. Getting Australia back into the world group will be tough and the rest of our players could do well to take on some of Hewitt's passion for his country and never say die attitude.

The guy likes playing the game. And as opposed to Roddick, he seems comfortable with the idea of just "existing" in the tour. And it still is a good living. I think he will play until he physically cannot.

Hewitt has been irrelevant for a long, long time. Other than the last year or so, Roddick was as relevant as anyone ranked outside the top 4.

I'd agree in his prime Hewitt was the better player but Roddick's prime was CLEARLY "longer" than Hewitt's.

I get the sense that Hewitt has been really frustrated by injuries lately. If he can stay healthy I wouldn't be surprised if he played all next year and maybe retired at AO 2014...but if injuries pop up again it will be a quiet retirement

When he's good and ready.
He's picked up some decent wins lately, including the scalp of a top 10 player.
He's also beaten Raonic, Roddick, Cilic, and Youzhny this year and taken sets off Djokovic.

These threads saying that player x 'should' retire are really stupid. Usually they are started by fans of the top 3/4 players who think that players who are not in regular grand slam contention are irrelevant.

Players should only retire when they feel like it is the right time to do so. If they enjoy competing on the tour they should continue for as long as they want.

Speaking of Ferrero, he will be coaching Almagro in 2013 I believe (and has been coaching him a bit this year as well), so it would be interesting if the final match of his pro career was to come against his current/future pupil at Valencia this Tuesday.

hewitt reminds me of connors. motivation isnt his problem its injuries and aging and even in the past year he can give pretty much any player trouble when hes healthy. in australia he beat roddick, raonic, and took a set off joker. he went 3 sets with the joker at olympics. got to finals of newport ...etc...etc...

He bent Monaco over a chair today. Nice win.

Hewitt has already set up a family, while Roddick is still in the sex phase.

He hasn't really been a contender to win slams since 2006, so this statement is idiotic. Let the man do what he loves until he feels ready to give it up.

I agree. If only contenders should continue to play tennis, almost everyone outside the top 4 should retire, haha. Or certainly the top 10-20.

He's still winning matches, he's still making money, if he enjoys playing and wants to do it, I hope he'll stay around as long as possible. There's guys ranked higher than him who often act like they just don't really care or take it seriously and are pretty boring to watch; I'd rather watch a lower ranked guy who seems to love it and try hard until the last point is played.

His recent win against Monaco says he has game still. His problem I think is his stamina in Grand Slams. He is running out of gas in the third and fourth sets. He has gained some weight, he should loose maybe 6-8 pounds.

Same story with Nalbandian. Both classy tennis players

Retire? yeah right. Hewitt is gearing up for one or two last runs at a major. His impressive run at the Olympics this year showed he still can compete at the elite level, just needs some luck and breaks like Gaudio or Sampras in his last US Open. You can never count out a player like Hewitt who has the heart of five lions.

I find it painful just to watch the wounded midget play, considering all the surgeries he had to endure.
I used to respect him for his fighting spirit when fighting made sense. Now he just prolongs the agony. Tennis players need to know when to leave with dignity - Roddick and Safin certainly knew.

This applies to Davydenko as well. He should retire in 2013 and not play a sad clown.

I think Hewitt will retire in either 2013 or 2014.
