My friend, I am not opposed to your principle. In this case, it's a risk that you'll hate it just in the effort to not waste something. You can't just try it and come back later if you don't like it. Regardless, you're entitled to what you asked and paid for, so unlike mayo, you can't just scrape off the word Control and have regular NXT.
So I gave the stringer my racquets and told her
It's included with the string, whatever the string costs is whatever it costs to get it strung.
So if the string is 16.95 then I just gotta buy the string and the stringing is free
And you called me quite frankly a jerk for being suspicious? You just stated that you get your racquets strung for free, no labor cost whatsoever. And then, you seriously complained that she gave you a near $20 string for free but yet you wanted a different, cheaper string instead? Is this someone you know as in a friend, or someone at a shop/club? If the former, then yes, you screwed your friend over having just done you a huge favor, and if the latter, there is something extremely fishy. Please, correct me where I'm wrong, or I'm about to chalk this up to typical Babolatbarry half-truth garbage.Yeah I admit it was pretty much like bring the racquets in, tell her the string, tell her the tension, walk out. Lack of communication I definitely agree
After reading this soap opera I think it comes down to whether the OP values and wants to maintain a relationship with his/her stringer. Yes, there was an oversight in using the wrong version of NXT -- and there is a substantive difference in different versions of NXT. But it is not the most egregious mistake that could have been made. Going back and insisting the stringer cut out a brand new string job is fair, just and equitable in absolute terms. However, if an ongoing relationship with that stringer is desired, there are better ways to handle the situation. If you do not give a **** about your relationship with the stringer, I guess the response was fine.

No, not a friend. A person who's job is to string racquets. I don't know this person at all. Bottom line, I told you the truth. You can believe it, or not I dont really care! I posted this just wondering what others would do in the situation. I didn't ask to be bashed or b*tched at.
and zapvor - it was $22 If I do remember. There was a couple bucks difference between the NXT 16 but I let them keep the money because they had to redo the string job.

He's talking in terms of a business relationship.
If it was $22, then that means the place where you take your racquets charge about $5 for labor. At that price if they do good work, you'll want to stay on their good side. Hard to believe it was that cheap, but hey, great deal if it was.
Given his history of only lying about what he posts while claiming it's the truth, can I be excused for not believing that this is entirely true? I purposely undercut my string prices so that I get more clientele and make very littler per customer, but make it up in volume. In other words: the incentive to have me string is because if you come to me, you even get the string for less than what you can buy it for. I cannot recall the name of the economic principle at the moment, but after hearing about it in class years ago, I decided to implement it and it's allowed me to pay off 2 stringing machines now. That means that for a hybrid of Black Widow and Thunderblast, I charge 21 bucks. A full bed of PSGD is 14. These are labor included prices. My principle rounds literally to the lowest dollar per set, and up to the highest dollar per half self (say a string is 9.95, I'll charge 9/set, 5/half set). I lose money on the string, but make just enough on the labor that it works out in volume as I said. I can do this because I have no overhead since I'm private, and my audio designs are my primary income with stringing being secondary fun. Unless they are giving you free labor as in it's a friend, it is impossible to make any money at a shop stringing a $17 string for $22 total. You would never be able to break even. Ever.yea 22 for nxt anything is cheap. i would definitely be nice to them they arent even getting paid much!
Again, how do you not remember where you most recently got your racquet strung? I'm done with this thread, unless you have some miracle pro shop, then you're just not telling the entire truth again. It was in a place in Florida, in the Venice area I think

Yep, on my inventory, Wilson NXT 16 is $26/frame w/ labor.Hehe I hear ya, PV, but I have no history with this gentleman, so I merely responded to what he wrote, nothing more.
I found it interesting, however, that a shop would string NXT that cheap when I'd charge $27 to do it. Anyway, if his claim is true, and they do good work, it's a heck of a deal.
That doesn't sound right. Certainly not for a shop.
For example Sport Chalet charges $16.99 for PSGD, $31.99 for NXT, and $12 if you bring your own string, which is quite reasonable.
...and you live in NC and got your racquet strung in FL?
Where, exactly, is this shop?
I'm sure there will be plenty flocking to that place at those prices.
I shall save them their graces, but I know of a pro shop in my home town which literally charges $5 extra for polyester. It doesn't matter if it's your string or theirs, if you want poly, you pay the "poly charge". Keep in mind this pro shop has been in business far longer than I've been alive even. That's kind of strange, too. Unless I'm missing something, the labor rate for PSGD is about $12, but $15 for NXT?
And there, my friends, we have it. May I now forever be excused for not believing a SINGLE WORD that kid says in the future?Hi Everyone,
Looks like my store is getting some buzz over here at TW!
Blogs are fun and can be informative, but can also be misleading or confusing when you only get to hear one side of the story. So, in the interest of "fair play" I'd like a chance to "defend" my store in this situation. The gentleman's story has quite a few inconstancies, which need addressing. First and foremost, we would NEVER substitute a string for a customer without express permission! When our players come in for restringing, we attach a detailed repair tag to their racquet and discuss (often at length) their stringing options. We note the string, gauge, tension and any other repairs, along with the player's name and phone (so we can contact them with any unforeseeable issues that may arise). If this person would like to give me his name and the general date he was in the store, I would happily look in my computer records and discuss the particulars of his stringing. (And to be exact, we are not in Tampa, we are in Clearwater, which is not close to Venice-are you sure you were in MY store?)
So, having said all that, if we still somehow managed to string his racquet with the wrong string we would restring it (on the spot) for no charge. Again, the problem with his story, is that we do not carry NXT Control (never have). We do carry Sensation, NXT and Sensation Control (entirely different make-up's). We DO have quite a competitive area in regards to pricing, but we string NXT for $31.99 and basic Sensation and Sensation Control for $26.99 (sorry to disappoint-but I WOULD be out of business if I only charged $21.99 for NXT. We charge $15 labor for ALL strings). We will restring while you wait or same day, though-and yes we have some "girl" stringers, but we're nice, funny and cute, not to mention great stringers, so we're worth it. (this IS a JOKE everyone)
As for the "uptight" comment, all I can say is that we take our stringing very seriously, and our reputation is vital to us. For the past 26 years we have strived to exceed our client's expectations on a daily basis. I can only assume we were confused by the perceived mistake. I'm happy that we restrung his racquet at no charge, as that is our policy whenever a customer is unhappy for any plausible reason.
I tend to look on the positive side of things, so I will use this as a learning experience, and strive for even better communication with my customers in the future. Thanks to TW for allowing us this "forum" to exchange information. To all you players out there.....remember to support your stringers and local tennis stores......we are here to help you play your best tennis! And if you are ever in Clearwater Florida, come on by and say "hi"!
You know that you've really done it when you try to smear a shop on the internet by name, and the shop owner creates an account JUST to set the record straight. That is extreme professionalism and shows that someone takes quite a bit of pride in their reputation. Lucikly for the ladies at Advantage Yours, not really anyone believes a word that you say. Nonetheless, I applaud them for coming on here, finding this thread (somehow, unless someone told them about it), and then telling what the truth is. The simple fact that they do not even stock the string you claim to have gotten is enough in itself. My dad lives down there, I was visiting for the weekend, missed a friday to go see him. The shop is in Tampa* not Venice, I apologize. My sister lives in Tampa and my dad in Venice, relatively close to eachother. It's called Advantage Yours Tennis.
wow.......interesting. who told the shop????
There's obviously lots of floridians on here, maybe someone gets their sticks strung there? There is no way she would randomly decide to check the tennis warehouse message board, go to the string section and just happen to find this thread hahawow.......interesting. who told the shop????
Got home, looked at them and she strung them with NXT Control ):
Those lies were a while back, I've grown up since then. This is the whole story.
Bottom line, I told you the truth. You can believe it, or not I dont really care!

I'm out of popcorn. Should I get a refill?
