The North Palm Beach Police Department is reportedly seeking an arrest warrant for former tennis-star Jennifer Capriati for allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend, Ivan Brannan.

According to Gossip Extra’s Jose Lambiet, Capriati could be facing charges of battery and stalking stemming from a Valentine Day’s incident with Brannan.

The report claims that Capriati and Brannan had some sort of altercation outside of the men’s locker room at the Oxygen Health and Fitness Gym in North Palm Beach, Florida. Capriati allegedly struck Brannan’s chest with her fist repeatedly before a yoga instructor intervened and called the cops.

Despite legal troubles during and after her playing career, Capriati was formerly a top-ranked player while winning 14 titles, including three Grand Slams. Capriati won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics.

Don't know what to make of this. I'm sure here's multiple sides to the story, but has to be fairly serious if an arrest warrant is being sought.

I never thought much of her shoplifting/marijuana thing when she was young - seemed like fairly common rebellion. Not that it wasn't wrong, but plenty of people have done something similarly stupid and didn't have any further issues when they were older.

I'm betting it doesn't lead to much and she won't be prosecuted. Yes, if the report is true, it technically is battery, but doesn't seem like something a prosecutor would pursue unless it's a pattern or there are other circumstances that we don't know about. If she's taken in, I'm sure she'll just say, "we got in a fight, I was pissed, I hit him."

But, sounds like she may have been following the guy around if there are suggestions of stalking.

I'm going to be a Devil's Advocate here. If Agassi was seen beating up Steffi Graf, there would be already 50+ posts here condemning or supporting Agassi... The social judgement of gender roles in this country still sets us as humans back according to progress.

Sure the boyfriend's 'manhood' can be called into question, but NOTHING is funny about abuse; whether it is the man or woman who is the victim.

I have no idea, but it sounds like criminal charges as the first step to filing a civil suit. The wimpy ex-boyfriend might be angling to relieve Capriati of some of her cash.

OMG.......as Sgt. Hulka would say "lighten up Francis!"

It's hysterical.........I cannot get the picture out of my head of the dude running into the men's locker room to hide (which he did) and have the Yoga instructor intervene and save him!!!!!! Yea a 36 yr old Capriati must have one hell of a right cross!

So, if 'wimpy' girl was being chased by a manly dude, everyone would be on the man's case. This is exactly the problem.

No matter how 'hysterical' the imagery is of this situation, that man is not the only one out there that is undergoing issues like these.

Laughing about it doesn't help, it makes you seem very insensitive. :|

The logical thing for the boyfriend to do is to sue Capriati for every penny he can get. :)

I'd generally agree. Plus, I think the guy may be smart enough to know that if he gets into a physical altercation with his ex and tensions are high and he does anything in response to her hitting him like shoving her, then he could be in a whole lot of trouble, as it would then be a man assaulting a female. Sure, some may think that it doesn't look good for him to retreat, but it's probably pretty smart.

there's a thread on this further down the page.

she's been on tmz a lot since retirement(dating a porn star, the 'accidental' overdose, stalking accusations etc. getting in a fight in a club with a girl over a guy. and that sad interview in the NY times a while back where she sounded pretty despondent over not being able to comeback on tour due to injuries)

I think Malisse said she was nutter after breaking up with her.

It was high time for her to hightail it outtahere: Records also show Capriati was the target of 10 — I counted — police complaints from an ex-boyfriend.

And that’s just for 2012!

Gate Crashing

The ex-boyfriend was identified as Ivan Brannan, 28, a former FSU golfer.

In August, Capriati allegedly sped through the guard gate of Brennan’s Singer Island condo building in her Porsche Cayenne after the guard refused to let her in.

She alleged blocked Brannan from leaving his car but left when he called police. Riviera cops caught up to her later and ordered her to stay off the property.

Brannan also accused Capriati of calling his work place, PGA Marina, over 100 times in a single day and questioning his co-workers about him.

Yeah, I think the smart thing to do was not to do anything at all. Sure, your manhood would be in question, but you won't have any charges pressed against you.

Now, the best thing to do is to execute a civil lawsuit against her for assault, battery, emotional distress, etc.

You may want to hear her side of all of this before you start handing over any of her money............bet NOTHING comes of this. She clearly has issues - according to past stories between these two he is quite a ******.

Nothing will happen.

There should be video recording when the event occurred. The yoga instructor is also a key witness including the other people who saw the altercation. But eyewitness testimony is one of those things that can be very skewed.

I don't think anything will happen either.. He probably went back to her house and made up the following night..

from 1996. sounds like there's a pattern here.

Five days after getting bounced from the French Open, Jennifer Capriati's thundering right hand accidentally caught the left eye of a nightclub waitress.

According to police, Capriati got into an argument with her boyfriend late Sunday night at Bubba's Beach Club in Tampa, Fla. A punch intended for her boyfriend instead hit waitress Angela Larson, who was standing nearby.

Tampa police spokesman Steve Cole said Larson initially waived pressing charges but filed a battery complaint two days later.

``Now we will take a statement from the woman that's making the allegation and we will probably try to contact Jennifer Capriati to see if she wants to make a statement,'' Cole said yesterday.

Cole said the state attorney's office will determine whether battery charges will be filed against Capriati. Larson did not immediately return phone calls yesterday.

Linda Dozoretz, a representative for Capriati's agent, said they were unaware of the incident and had no comment.

Capriati, 20, rejoined the tennis circuit earlier this year after two stints in drug rehabilitation. She left the tour after the U.S. Open in 1993 because of burnout and was arrested in the spring of 1994 for marijuana possession.

Club owner Todd Clem, speaking from his radio studio Wednesday, confirmed the police account.

``Jennifer wanted to punch her boyfriend and I guess Angela was standing nearby,'' he said. ``And he ducked and she hit Angela in the left eye, and her tray of drinks went flying everywhere.''

Clem said Capriati was escorted from the club by security and held for police.

Agreed, lost in the sauce is that he has no wiggle room here. He so much as "lays his hands on a woman" he's dead meat (and rightly so, imho).

On the other hand if it turned out to be a case of him afraid she was gonna punch his lights out then he'd have had to claim in his defense that two tits and a vagina ganged up on him.

It may not be written that way into the law but, IN FACT, she can hit him as much as she wants and if he even touches her, the police will take him away and he will face criminal charges. He MUST just stand there and be hit with his arms down.

If this is an ongoing thing, I'm sure his lawyer advised him of this previously.

Womens' divorce lawyers will sometimes advise their clients to start an altercation and if the man responds at all, he will be hauled off as a spouse abuser and she will get everything she wants in the divorce, including not allowing him to see the children.

Be warned, guys!

I agree that it has generally gotten this bad in the states. I'm not really sure what the people criticizing him are getting at, as this is serious business. The only time you raise your hand to your partner/ex-partner is if you feel your life is in jeopardy (if you are male).

As has already been pointed out in this thread, she seems to have a history of lover issues, so maybe something should actually be done this time.

Why wouldn't she have the arrest warrant against her? She hit him and he did nothing, which is exactly what you should do, unless you have no other option.

At the very least, attitudes are slower to change than the legal system.

If the men actually fought the women, the women would be the ones in the ER with broken bones at least. Yes, men who defend themselves are arrested and carted off to jail. If they pay lots of $ for a really good lawyer and can show a pattern of abuse by the woman, they can avoid conviction. Best to let her hit you and get out of there as quckly as possible.

She's a mess. First, there was the entitlement issues born of the hype BS when she was young, pushed--with force--by the likes of Tracy Austin and Evert, who wanted to see another "cutesy American girl" image in women's tennis (which at that point was the punching bag of players such as Graf).

When she crashed & burned sans a major, she was still made to feel as though she was the special American, so her attitude was more obnoxious than ever. By the time she finally won majors, her on and off-court behavior was like her fathers: hostile, loud and offensive. Add in the drug use, theft, and posessive attitude toward boyfriends, and she is--as noted earlier--a mess.

The guys gotta be a Wuss ( he was a college GOLFER).......140lb chick beats on his chest and ANOTHER guy has to intervene and save him...ha ha ha ha - the YOGA instructor came to his rescue!!!!!! People in Love/hate so some dumb sh**, kinda rooting for her now and hopes she kicks his but.

I disagree, if the gender roles were REVERSED people would be furious. The man is doing the right thing he's going to the police, getting it in writing, and if Jennifer doesn't watch out she might have a lawsuit on her hands. Jennifer needs to move on and leave her ex boyfriend alone. I heard about this story before Jennifer is harassing the guy and he's going through the proper channels he wants NOTHING TO DO WITH HER. So why doesn't Jennifer get a clue and move on? Geesh.

Texting the man hundreds of times and tresspassing is pathetic.

Jennifer Capriati is so messed up she's such a loser chasing a man who doesn't want her girl get a life.

Jennifer is a hot-blooded Italian lady with a temper. She showed this often on-court during her career. Anyone having dated Jennifer knows this about her. I think her ex-boyfriend has pedaled this story to the media because he knew Jennifer's career-long struggles dealing with the media was her weakness.

Some folks will do anything for attention, even if its claiming their ex-girlfriend attacked them. Any real man wouldn't have involved law enforcement.

Being Italian has nothing to do with it. Having her head stuffed with entitlement issues as the "favorite American girl," when she never had the game to be the greatest American player (post Evert) played a significant part in her self-destruction. Add Capriati thinking she so favored that she could do anything she wanted (partying from one country to another, drug abuse), and when things do not go her way...anger, suicide attempt and assault.

Jail is the only answer for her--if not for punishment, then to keep her off of the streets.

Another whacked out child star. All too predictable. At least she didn't cut his throat.

Sounds like a fairly minor incident that was blown out of proportion. I don't think she would have been arrested if she was not well known and there had not been prior incidents with the same guy. She needs to avoid him entirely until she gets over the break up once and for all.

Probably a good wake up call for her. At 36, it is time to act like an adult.

I just don't why such a big deal is made out of Jennifer's youthful indiscretions. We've all done stupid things as teenagers and Jennifer was likely acting-out in an attempt to just feel like a normal human being. A lot of pressure was placed upon her shoulders before the age of 16.

I don't recall there ever being any proof that Jennifer attempted suicide. In fact, she and her family denied it. Drug interactions are more common-place these days, with much worse consequence (see Heath Ledger, etc.).

Jennifer sure looked and sounded great at her Hall of Fame induction, not the type of person some of you are attempting to portray her as.

I suspect that given the history of the media stalking Jennifer throughout her life, it would be no surprise to me if this isn't a failed extortion attempt by an ex-lover who decided to get even.

This Ivan dude is a major ahole........
I suspect Jennifer is the actual victim here, but the media will once again promote unsubustantiated lies, only to sensationalize a trivial story. The media is no longer about news, but about unproven tabloidish trash. They definitely appeal to the lowest common denominator of society these days. Tennis fans should be more sceptical and guarded of this nonsense. We're better than that.

How many times are people going to use this excuse? Hello Jennifer is irty six years old age! The woman is a grown up!

They DID put too much pressure on her as a kid. It's not an excuse just a fact. Teenage phenoms in pretty much all areas usually have some trouble, big or small, as adult. Many people have failings and troubles and do stupid things. But they don't get written up in some BS celebrity's behaving badly piece. I will remember JC as I did when I was a budding junior tennis player at age 13 and she was like 15. She was my hero then and I will always be rooting for her.

Shoplifting is normal? Not even close, but for anyone else, its a trip to county lockup and the orange jumpsuit--no excuses. Same with drug use.

A lot of pressure was placed upon her shoulders before the age of 16

She's not the only one, but every prodigy does not end up being a drug-addled, violent, shoplifting ass with entitlement issues (among many).

I don't recall there ever being any proof that Jennifer attempted suicide. In fact, she and her family denied it.

Of course they will deny it--which is part of the problem. She was a train wreck up to that point, so they tried to avoid adding insult to injury by admitting anything...not that it helps matters.

Drug interactions are more common-place these days, with much worse consequence (see Heath Ledger, etc.).

Knowledge of drug interactions are more commonplace than ever before; every perscription and over the counter drug has warnings (to avoid lawsuits), so unless she's remarkably stupid, it's a thin excuse that her overdose was was an accident.

Jennifer sure looked and sounded great at her Hall of Fame induction, not the type of person some of you are attempting to portray her as.

No one needs to plot against her; all one needs to do is stand there, and she will start swinging. She's not being forced to commit assault (or steal, abuse drugs, etc.).

Gender roles in this country is just very odd to me. I can say the same thing about inappropriate relationships.. A older male-younger woman would be bad, but vice-versa would be 'hot'..

That's an interesting report.

Also, besides the pride, men try to 'make' up towards angry women by charm and you know what they expect after that.. It's looked upon as an arousing act or something at the end..

Hey, it's the celebrity fan-girl again.

And there are studies that counter that study as well.
I didn't offer any studies. I offered statistics gathered by the US Department of Justice which details the majority of domestic assault victims being women.

You and your partner in crime claim to have studies which prove the opposite, that men are the one's abused by women. You haven't provided any link to a study or proof which would change my mind, or even for the casual viewer.

But I can understand your viewpoint in one regard. Men aren't what they used to be. I blame that on poor parenting and absent fathers. Men are largely inferior human beings.

the numbers i saw in my "former life" (1st responder about 13 years ago) estimated that men were the victim in approximately 10% of domestic violence cases but admitted that percentage might actually be a bit higher due to many such incidents going unreported.

on a side note, gender roles are very wonky. i'm a stay at home dad and people who pride themselves on being "progressive, forward thinkers" either shoot me a look that says "you couldn't get a job, huh?" or they assume that my lack of a second x chromosome renders me incompetent in all matters concerning my child. they'd probably really freak if they found out that i stay at home with him because (in addition to being infant/ child cpr/ first responder trained) i'm by far the more patient parent.

anyway, on topic now, this seems to me to be an instance of a person who grew up without learning there were consequences to her actions or at a more basic level never learned how to relate to people in a non-violence/non-threatening manner. maybe she needs anger management help. there's obviously a problem here somewhere. however, not every young tennis "phenom" ends up pulling a knife on they significant other so to say that jenjen is merely a product of the system she was in seems to be a bit farfetched.
