Novak Djokovic has a lot to prove on Monday if he loses he is NOT number one.

Novak Djokovic's career seems to be mirroring Ivan Lendl he's reaching a lot of grand slam finals BUT his record isn't great 6-5 so far.

Novak is actually the underdog in this final for tomorrow, Nadal is clearly the favourite he looks invincible, it would take an incredible performance by Novak to beat Nadal tomorrow.

If Novak wants to be taken seriously as the number one player he needs to win the US OPEN final tomorrow. Novak does well in Australia, but he's only won 1 Wimbledon and 1 US OPEN so far. It would also be humiliating for Novak if he goes 1-4 in US OPEN finals, it would underscore he can't win outside of Australia.

I jumped ship at Wimbledon when I saw his stupid Del Potro match. The problem with Novak is the guy gets too tired for the finals and flames out like he did against Andy Murray he got TIRED due to the long semifinal.

Novak has a lot to prove here, it is terrible that the number one player in the world hasn't won an ATP Tour title since APRIL!

If Nadal wins he is true Number 1 even if by some chance Novak ends YE#1.

Just like Vilas was World Number by fans in 1977 for his 2 major wins over Connors big zero that year.

I don't even see how that's debateable. Tennis is all about slams and the guy who wins the most slams in a year is the man for that year. I don't care if Nadal doesn't lose another match in 2013...if he loses to Djokovic tomorrow night, Djokovic will have had the better year with his two slams.

It seems like you may have a problem with the ranking system rewarding sustained high performance levels as opposed to rewarding players who take off several months to rejuvenate themselves before returning to play again only after they are perfectly ready to go on (white hot winning streaks for a few months on) fresh legs. Nadal is the in-form player at this moment, but his total number of weeks at number 1 is very likely going to be eclipsed by Novak's within the next month because holding onto number one takes sustained excellence, while a path of highly irregular performance peaks and valleys is not going to help anyone wishing to remain at number one, regardless of whether he happens to be the in-form player of the moment.

its not. it never was, it never will be.
its everything for those who are pretty much casual fans and just tune in for the big ones/finals. those who just like to throw around the numbers.

if someone wins 1 slam 8 masters and a wtf compared to someone who won 2 slams you would say the guy with 2 slams had a better year??

I wouldn't say I don't care who finishes #1, I do find year ends at #1 important, it shows a consistency of high level performance throughout a prolonged period.

However, I agree that slams are it in tennis (far above anything else) so whomever wins this final is definitely the best player of the year in my book as well.

2012 for instance. The majors were split between the Top4. That's when the ranking comes into discussion to determine who's the POTY.

Nole won the WTF to finish the year at #1, hence he was the best player of 2012.


Now let's pretend like Nadal wins the US Open, bails out for the rest of the year and Nole somehow sustains his #1 ranking. Yeah pretty unlikely but possible. In that case Nadal's still the POTY in my book, cause at the end of the day majors are what matter the most. Just my 2cents.

Novak has done well this year but he needs another slam title or else he is a hollow number one. He needs to show the world he is the man to beat on hard outside of Australia.

Indeed. Someone taking 8 months off -- allegedly unable to train for at least a significant part of it -- due to claims of a serious injury, and then coming back miraculously "invincible" and better than ever . . . that should be raising everyone's eyebrows.

I disagree with that. Of course, barring some extremely unusual developments, Nadal will most lkely finish the year as number 1, as he can only add points from here to the end.

But if for whatever reason Djokovic ended up first, I would consider his record to be better. And please note that I am a Nadal fan.

I've always disagreed with this notion of just counting slams and leaving it at that, especially in a case where a player has reached 3 major finals and one semifinal. The ranking system is fair and it's there for something.

Further, those who insisit on going by slam performance alone, are vulnerable in this case to anyone pointing out the obvious fact that Djokovic has won 5,120 points at majors this year, while Nadal won 4,010.

The number one this year will be the one who ends up with the most points. Simple and fair.

I appreciate your opinion, but I'll gladly take the 2 Slam year over the 1 slam year regardless of my ranking.
