Nadal is not human

Physically the guy is a monster, the most gifted endurance athlete tennis has ever seen. People who insinuate he is on steroids haven't got a clue what they are on about. Steroid bloat the body and cause a very different physicality than he has. He is a one off. Like Usain Bolt.

It is fair to say that the grand slam is very much a possibility this year, if he can manage the transition to grass better and survive the first week of W.

I cant fathom someone in the past who would be able to match up to Nadal in terms of concentration and focus.

Vs Dimitrov in the QFs, he was down set point in the third set on his serve. I would have been ****ting myself due to the overwhelming pressure, but he somehow is able to play his best.

Today against Fed in the third set. Anyone else would be thinking of the final already, but the look of concentration on his face was just amazing. Mentally he's like the toughest athlete in world sports today. Or at the very least among the top 3.

Steroids do not "bloat the body" look at Korda, Carl Lewis, Alex Rodriguez, Roy Jones Jr., Lamont Peterson. Not saying Rafa uses PEDs but PEDs do not bloat the body.

Rafa reminds me of a great white shark, those deadly black eyes, the facial expression, the teeth he likes to dig into trophies. Would not be shocked if he poured shark hormones on his oatmeal :)

He is as tough as you say - though world of sports, I don't know. But the Dimi match, was really more a case of Dimi being non-clutch rather than Rafa being so tough. As Rafa said with a grin about how he escaped with the third set: "I was so lucky!"

btw - how is it going with your predictions? He should have lost six times by now according to you. Expecting another 1-6, 1-6, 1-6 defeat vs. Wawrinka in the final?

You have no proof that Usain Bolt is clean - bad comparison.

It's funny that you should mention all of the qualities that point to PED usage i.e

"Physically the guy is a monster" & "endurance athlete tennis has ever seen"

Post-Armstrong, post-McGwire, post-BALCO, and post-Biogenesis, this is a fair assessment -- especially when it's the physicality and endurance that's predominantly responsible for someone's career accomplishments.

It may take a while, but one day someone will spill the beans.

Nadal is the best of his era, without question.

His era includes Federer. 4 years 10 months difference is not much. Not saying you are, but some are trying to redefine era's for tennis players. Federer's defense is still top notch and we know Nadal's has nagging knee injuries so it equals out. Rafa just counteracts Federer's game plan the best.

The guy who blew two straight tournaments to Nadal with Double Faults on Match Points?? RG 2012, Rome 2012. The guy who was riding on a wave of momentum in last years US Open final and still ended up in a 4 set spanking??

Greatest mental strength-->Novak ??? Comedy Gold

I think Novak in 2011 had insane mental strength. It's as if he felt he could do no wrong. But aside from 2011 he is not quite as clutch.

Nadal has been quite consistently mentally strong. He often plays his best tennis when he most desperately needs it. Compare Nadal's 5th set in the RG 2013 Semifinal with Djokovic's 4th set in the USO 2013 Final.

I kinda see your point. Def some truth to it. But Novak is in a bad place right now and he might not get out of it.
He is a totally different beast when he is playing Davis cup. The Serbian Fans inspire him like I have never seen a player get inspired before. Play Djokovic in Davis cup you will lose no matter who you are.
Getting that passion outside Davis Cup is the big obstacle now.

Is there any way to block every comment and thread with the words GOAT in it? It is completely subjective and an exercise in mental masturbation to try and determine the GOAT.

That said, Nadal is an excellent player, a complete machine. I'm not a fan of his style, but his results speak for themselves.

Which wave are you talking about? Losing the RG semi, losing the Wimbledon final or losing the two Masters leading up the US (including one in the third set TB to Rafa)? Rafa surely was the man with the momentum. And the mental strength in that US Open match for that matter.

I've been a Nadal fan since he came on the tour. Rafael Nadal has inspired me to be a better tennis player more the any other player I've been a fan of. Vamos Rafa!

That was my first ever sig here :) "Nadal is a beast.... a machine.... he's not human!" :) thanks for the nostalgia. 7 years later and he still delivers more entertainment than anyone else.

No doubt that he is great mentally but at least within my industry (sports science) he is viewed with great scepticism by many. There is a strong possibility that Nadal will eventually be stripped of many of these titles when all is said and done.

Why is he viewed in that light?

Who knows whether he is doping or not, but I think most tennis fans here are total chumps who think players are doping just because they are ripped or muscular or can play some amazing defense. And lets not forget the fact that nadal is just confident playing Federer, his mediocre performances against his early round opponents were certainly not " too good to be true".

Nothing Nadal did last night was "too good to be true". Federer was hitting the ball to Nadals forehand on groundstrokes and volleys and he had to pay the price for going to Nadals strengths.

The player with the most physical and injury prone game ever is winning slams for a decade now, something even Fed and Sampras didn't and noone not even Nadal fans predicted it. Not to mention, Ralph is winning without a stutter.

When Armstrong came back from his testicular cancer and won Tour de France, everyone was calling him the ironman of sport who has unlimited strength and an unbreakable will, we saw how that went.
If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

In that case, Federer, like his fans, is a chump.

Spot on. Mud slinging is easy. It just requires an enormous lack of scruples. Anybody who thinks Nadal is a muscular monster is either physically abnormal or an idiot. Nadal is not that muscular, really. He has well defined muscles and a good bone structure (thick arms and legs) but nothing suspicious. Federer on the other hand has thin arms and a slight beer gut.

I keep wondering what has made it possible that the person who has had a long-standing back problem (at least since 2003 when he was deemed unfit to fulfill the military service obligations), has won 17 GS titles!

How quickly you forget the year that was 2011. IIRC Nads' "mental strength" was nowhere to be found as he racked up seven consecutive losses while becoming Djoker's pigeon.

How devastating would losing the French to him too have been? And he really was two or three key points away from losing it to Fed too.

One of the things that's common to all the great top players we have right now is their ability to put disappointing losses behind them, even if eventually.

Bwahahahaha!

I wasn't aware Fred had a long-standing history of citing back problems after losses and missed tournaments from 2003-2012!

But that prompts some unavoidable questions:

Why did Fred apparently cease whatever "made it possible" from January 2008-May 2009, March 2010-March 2012, and January 2013-January 2014?

Why, given that BALCO and Biogenesis were US-based, aren't you "wondering" about Roddick and Isner?

And, if this doesn't stem from pure partisanship and malice, why aren't you "wondering" about that fellow you keep on worshiping??

Whence come Nadal's fearsome topspin forehand, strength that allows clean winners from the way behind the baseline on either side, boundless energy?

If you think a physique like this is "too good to be true" than I don't know what to say. Maybe get a gym membership or just go outside.

Too bad Igor Andreev didn't have a better career despite taking more PEDs than Nadal.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ICvpj--VG...1Q/U3HIjzQm9no/s1600/Igor+Andreev+%285%29.jpg

My "too good to be true" comment you keep harping on has nothing to do with anyone's physique.

It has everything to do with physical performances.
Clear? or should I say the "cream and the clear"?

He's the best in the world. If you think the human race can't produce somebody capable of doing those things naturally, you must be joking. Kate Upton's tatas are also impressive, but you won't see me accusing her of doping.

Play some tennis for hours, do cardio as well, go to the gym........maybe your obese appearance will improve as well and give you "boundless energy".........

Of course not. That procedure wouldn't involve doping.
