Clemson Tiger tennis

Need to beat South Carolina tomorrow. It will make it very hard for SC to make the tournament if we take care of business tomorrow. Would be so nice to put them out of their misery.

The weather is colder and cloudy but should still be good enough for this match to be played outdoors.

Likely singles matchups:

1: Hunter Harrington vs 55 Tsvetan Mihov

2: Dom Maden vs 112 Andrew Adams

3: Alejandro Augusto vs Thiago Pinheiro

4: Austin Ansari vs Kyle Koch

5: Luke Johnson vs Chip Cox

6: Robert Dudley/Fernando Sala vs Andrew Schafer

doubles is effectively a toss up and will be very important.

Clemson is the favorite at 1(based on form) and 5. SC the heavy favorite at 6. The match will be decided at 2-4. #3 looks like it could be a long 3 set match and may be the determiner.

USC is Top25, why they not should make the tournament if they lose today? Otherwise i am looking forward to this game today. Good matchup !

They are ranked #40 right now. if they lose to Clemson there goes a chance to move up. 45 is usually around the bubble. They will have to pull an upset in the SEC or two because the losses will begin to pile up.

ah okay, i not saw they are lower. Okay, then it could be a problem, even if they can win vs LSU/Ole Miss/Arkansas, it is worth nothing. And when i look on their results so far, this team really could miss Ncaas. They ve only Harvard as a average-plus -win , and they barely survived San Diego and MTSU (only can hope Harvard or San Diego can pull some good results and jump up their rankings)

according to livestats, both teams are putting in a surprise entry at #6

I can't help but think that is a mistake made by livestats. Maybe that is an exho or something and the person running it wrote that down.

Gotta be a mistake. Schafer is in at doubles as is Dudley, so no injuries.

I'm gonna have to just relax and live with every 15 minute updates.

Tigers dominate court 1, 8-1. Harrington and Maden will be in the rankings next time. Undefeated so far at #1 doubles.

Gamecocks up 7-4 on court 2.

Tigers need to close on court 3 where they lead 6-4.

Big big doubles point!

I still think #6 is a listing mistake. I cannot fathom why either team would play those guys in that spot for this match.

You know what would be nice? If Clemson Tigercast showed tennis. They show baseball and volleyball so why not tennis sometimes? I contacted them about this last year and they gave me some run around reasons. It would be nice for sure.

Augusto goes from 0-2 to 2-1 in the first set. That's quite a comeback. :)

ugh I know the exact people who are doing these updates. I can just imagine them sitting there like bumps on a log.

updates once every 10-15 minutes are too frustrating.

also looks like twitter has decided to call it a day

I'm so nervous. 3 courts firmly for Clemson and 3 firmly for SC. I'm very concerned about court 3, I can definitely see Pinheiro digging in here and rallying. I don't see on which of the 3 courts SC is winning that Clemson can rally, maybe Ansari but I am not betting on it.

Why on earth is Dudley not playing 6.

and now Dom Maden with a big rally to take the first set 7-6! This is what I cal fight from the Tigers.

Would be huge in Ansari could pull out this tiebreak.

Lett sinking without trace on court 6 as expected.

edit: Yes yes! Ansari and Augusto take the first set!

it would be really big if Johnson could finish this in 2 at #5. It's effectively game over if he does that.

Ansari has now won 8 of the last 10 games.

Harrington wins!

Ok Tigers we can now do this the easy surgical way or the hard way. Johnson and Ansari need to close here and it's game over, go back to Columbia see ya next year. But if Cox can win this set then we are in for a battle.

Knowing Pinheiro he very well could have pulled a Wagland. Either way though huuuuuge tiebreak there. Gamecocks would have had momentum on all 3 remaining courts if Pinheiro had won it. Augusto was down 1-4 in that set!!

Neither website report has the tiebreak scores.

Also no comments from Goffi this time. I guess beating San Diego will be the emotional high of their season.

still hope USC will make NCAAs , they clearly deserve it, other teams are not better. They were little unlucky about the tiebreakers this time.

I certainly don't hope they make it.

I'm quite happy about the win yesterday. To be honest I had a bad feeling about it but the team really showed up. Austin Ansari gets the game ball because the big momentum shift on his court was key in the match. You knew SC was going to make a run at a court or two and Clemson needed a response and Ansari made that response.

Harrington will certainly be in the rankings next singles release, that's a solid win over the #55 player even though Mihov is going south fast.

Augusto really fought hard. Pinheiro is a fighter and a grinder so I am very impressed that he out fought the Brazilian.

I'm still baffled by the decision to play Lett at 6. Dudley and Sala didn't have the best blue gray tournament but Lett obviously isn't the answer there. Hopefully #6 does not become an issue as the season progresses.

Ok so Miami tomorrow in a bizarre 11 am start time. Weather not looking so good so it may be indoor.

Miami gave us a very tough match last year that needed Rigsby pulling out a 3rd set tiebreak to win it. The team is up after beating SC and with FSU on the horizon next Tuesday this is the perfect time for a letdown match. So hopefully the team will be ready and take care of business.

always interesting to see how well almost Tigers are doing.
Jao Chi-San who is playing #3 for Tulane this season was very nearly a Clemson player. He probably would have been a tad better than Dudley and Sala and would be locking down #6 right now.

Vs FSU today in about 2 hours. This is going to be a tight one. Last year the FSU match was probably the most entertaining of the year and the one where Clemson grew the most. Lost doubles and 5 of the 6 first sets but has stellar comebacks from Ansari,Harrington and Rigsby to get the win plus Yannick Maden's win over Cotrone.

FSU is a very familiar opponent to Clemson. Personally I now know the FSU team better than Clemson's because I have only seen 3 of the current Clemson players play before (Harrington,D.Maden and Ansari).

matchups:

1. Hunter Harrington vs Dom Cotrone - Harrington is in better form despite the tough loss to Aly. Cotrone looks to be lost in the past two matches. Harrington likes to dictate points with his big forehand, which is bigger than Cotrone's. Cotrone mainly just sits back and tries to pound through people. I like Harrington in this match.

2. Dom Maden vs Blake Davis - These two met 3 years ago in Clemson when both were Freshmen. Maden won that one 6-2 6-2. Maden can punish weak serves with his powerful returns, which is something Davis does a lot of. I expect Dom Maden to win this match.

3. Alejandro Augusto vs Christian Gonzalez-Mendez - CGM is playing the best out of any FSU player right now. Augusto has been clutch recently and been playing well. However I have to give the slight edge to CGM here and say he will win this match.

4. Austin Ansari vs Marco Nunez - Nunez beat Ansari 6-4 6-3 in their one meeting in the fall season of 2012 when Nunez was a UGA player. Ansari is a much better and mature player now though and Nunez is in bad form at the moment. I expect Ansari to win this match.

5. Luke Johnson vs Michael Rinaldi - This match will probably decide the match. Johnson couldn't close the door against South Carolina against Chip Cox so hopefully that will not be playing in his mind in what is bound to be a very tight match and what will probably be the decided on court 5.

6. Robert Dudley vs Grayson Goldin - Goldin has a very good record at 6 this year. Dudley has been pretty solid but also had a few losses vs comparable opponents. I expect Goldin will win this match.

Doubles: FSU is favored in doubles at 2 and 3. Harrington/Maden have not lost so far this year, Davis and Cotrone will provide stiff competition. I expect FSU to just edge the doubles point.

Clemson must have come out really flat in the singles. Looks like they lost 4 non-competitive first sets with the other two still in first set TB's. They need to get those TB's and get some momentum back on their side.
