Clemson Tiger tennis

Scores at time of delay:

1. Andrews leads Maden 6-0
2. Harrington leads Monaghan 4-3
3. Hagar leads Augusto 4-2
4. Covalschi leads Johnson 5-2
5. Schnurrenberger leads Ansari 5-2
6. Lett leads McCoy 4-2

Lett and Harrington need to hold their advantages and we need a rally on one of the other courts. I'm looking at Augusto. He really should beat Hagar and is the most likely player to dig in and rally.

Very bad performance today from the Tigers. Didn't even give it a fight in singles. Only Harrington and Lett did well today. Clemson should have been the more motivated team as well considering they were playing for hosting in the NCAA tournament while Notre Dame wasn't playing for anything really (in theory a chance at an ACC title but they aren't beating Virginia and they know that). And to come out like that and get plastered when Notre Dame is missing their #3 player from the line-up? Really discouraging result.

Particularly discouraging was Ansari,Johnson and Augusto. Yes Dom Maden got blasted but he was playing a top 25 player. Augusto getting routined by their usual #4 player. Ansari getting easily beaten by their usual #6. And Johnson making no inroads whatsoever in his 2nd match vs Covalschi. Ansari has now had a string of bad results, losing 6 of his last 8 all of which except 1 by easy two-set scorelines. Augusto and Johnson are also fading a bit though.

Hosting is out now especially since Texas Tech and Virginia Tech failed to finalize their would be upsets. I'm betting we will be sent to Florida or Kentucky now. Luckily will remain high enough ranked to avoid being sent to Georgia and it would not make sense to send us to Duke being an ACC team and all. It will be Florida or Kentucky.

Clemson will be around 21 in the rankings. Meaning they shoukd be paired up with a team in the 12 range. Taking into account regionality Clemson will probably be sent to Kentucky and face probably Louisville as the 3 seed. Could possibly be sent to Florida as well, if they don't wait to put another SEC team in Gainesville and since Cal went there last year. I'm hoping for Florida because if we were to pull the upset, would rather face Oklahoma than Virginia again in the round of 16. Florida and Kentucky are basically even so even chances of advancing at each.

I don't think they would send Clemson anywhere other than those two spots. They avoided conference match ups last year in the pairings so unlikely to be sent to Duke. Too highly ranked to be sent to Georgia(that will probably be NC State's destination). Sending Clemson to Columbia or Illinois doesn't make much since or to somewhere like Texas or A&M considering there are more regional close teams in the 20s for those spots.

Team reacts to tournament selection

Harrington says Purdue is always a solid team, ha well they haven't the tournament since 2002 but its good to give them respect because it won't be easy. Purdue is the heavy favorite at 6 right off the racquet as Mateus Silva has dominated there all year while Clemson has struggled there.

The Kentucky description of Clemson is a mess

The Clemson Tigers, who will be the No. 2 seed in the Lexington Regional finished the season 20-8 overall on the 2014 season, and finished in the top half of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson racked up non-conference wins over Ole Miss, Auburn, Princeton and Boise State, with all but one of those matches coming at home in Clemson. The Tigers also got big conference wins over Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Boston College in ACC action. Clemson advanced to the 2014 ACC Tournament quarterfinals, where they fell to Notre Dame, 4-2.

Clemson lost to Boise rather than beating them. And only one of those matches was at home and that was vs Auburn, not the other way around as this says. And why mention GT and BC as "big" ACC wins? Surely beating FSU and NC State were much bigger wins than beating the two worst teams in the ACC.

Silva actually finished the season with 3 losses and a DNF. Notwithstanding that though, nothing about Clemson's performances at 6 this season suggests that he'll go into that match as anything other than a heavy favorite...

Purdue's strength is 3-6. Clemson should be able to win at 1,2 and doubles and then just take one of the remaining 4 courts. It will not be easy but I expect a win over Purdue.

Focus on Kentucky after beating Purdue (UK better focus on Denver too based on what Denver did last year to Florida). But I think Kentucky made a mistake switching Roberts and Lai.

Denver graduated Bonin at #1 and is weaker this year. They lose almost all road matches, lose almost all non-conference matches against anyone decent. Lost 5-2 at Nebraska. Researching their record led me to pick Kentucky in the bracket challenge (i.e. sure bet in round 1, shaky in round two vs. Clemson, so pick them now).

Do you know if a guy named Clint Greene played at Clemson back in the late-80s? I don't know if you have access to such records. He was a pretty good player in VA, probably ranked between 5 and 10 in the state in the under-18s. I know he went to Clemson and became a teaching pro after school, but I'm not sure if he actually played at Clemson. I don't know how strong Clemson's program was back then. Those records might be relegated to a filing cabinet in a warehouse by now...

That was before my time (I was born in 1990). I looked through this media guide. Page 84 has historical line-ups and I see no mention of Clint Greene there.

so like Clemson guys practicing super hard now for the tournament. what kind of drills are they doing ? to preapare

Will Clemson's recruiting class solve the problems they've been having at 6 this season?

This year was the big recruiting year so next year we will have 2 new players at most but likely just 1 in Hampton Drake, 5 star recruit from Hilton Head,SC. Clemson loses Dom Maden. I'm thinking Drake could fit in at #5 next year. A year should improve the batch of Lett,Kennedy,Sala and Dudley. Whoever improves the most out of that batch will take #6 and likely be better than they are this year. I think that Kennedy and Sala have the most upside of the 4.

vs Purdue tomorrow

Clemson should take doubles fairly easily.

Clemson should easily take 1 and 2 as well. It's the weakness of Purdue and both Harrington and Maden have played good tennis this season.

After that it's a little less clear. Purdue is strong from 3-6 but it will be very hard to claw all 4 matches away from Clemson. Silva should get an easy win at 6. I expect Augusto to get a win and clinch the match with Johnson close to finishing the match as well. Ansari will be down when it ends.

4-1 Clemson

Maden wins the last 4 games of the match to win 6-0 6-4. Medinilla was falling over on almost every shot. Very odd to watch.

That is strange. Watched Medinillia at the ITA's in the fall and was impressed. He's one of those freshman who had a very good fall, then fell off with an average spring.

ok so the big day of reckoning is tomorrow. It will make the season either a very good one or a decent one. This is a 50/50 match in my book. Only the home court gives Kentucky an advantage really.

Doubles: I expect Clemson to get the doubles point. UK struggled vs Denver today in doubles and Clemson easily took the point vs Purdue. 1-0 Clemson heading to singles.

Singles:

1. Harrington vs Jomby - Harrington typically does well vs players who play a similar style to him as Jomby does. Big Serve, big forehand etc. If Harrington serves well he can win this match, its a good matchup for him. However I think Jomby will be very tough to beat at home as a senior and he is slightly better than Harrington at net. I will go Jomby in 3 or two close sets like 7-5 7-6

2. D.Maden vs Gomez - Senior vs Senior in what will be a slugfest. Two players playing very well this season. I believe this will be the deciding match. Will Dom Maden really defeat Gomez in front of his home fans with a trip to Athens on the line? yes, yes he will because I will be a shameless homer tomorrow. Maden in 3, the clincher (assuming outdoors)

3. Augusto vs Pennington - Augusto has hot a wall here and is not playing that well. If this is indoor I like his chances even less. Pennington in 2.

4. Ansari vs Lopez - Ansari got a nice win today to boost some confidence. Lopez is not a great #4 and I think he is susceptible in this spot. I think Ansari can get the win here. Ansari in 2

5. Johnson vs Lai - This will be the decider if this is indoor. It will be a 3 setter between two strong #5 players. Both are probably more solid that the #4's on their own teams. Johnson wins close matches a lot. If he does not bet blown out he is likely to win the match. So I think he will get the 3 set victory here for Clemson.

6. Lett vs Roberts - Lett has been playing ok lately but this is a bridge too far. Roberts in 2.

I hope this stays outdoors. I will be in Austin anyway so would not be able to watch the streams. Indoors favors Kentucky more I think. They are a better indoor team than outdoor.

Wow. Don't want to win that way. Hate that for Jomby.

If it was 3-3 and that was the decider I'd agree that'd be a tough way to win it, but with it being early you take that point and put it in the bank. Luke Johnson needs to win his match in straights or it could get hairy.

Gifted a 2-0 lead with an unfortunate injury and cannot win. Dom Maden shows up with an impressive win like usual this year but his teammates fail him. Especially Ansari who was an almost sure loss in the later parts of the year and Augusto who faded as the year went on. Straight set loss to Pennington? I expected it but c'mon. Ansari blasted in the 2nd set, putting much more pressure on Johnson. I am not even blaming Johnson because Lai is a great player and all the pressure was on Johnson's. shoulders. Lett wins 3 games vs a guy who went 6-5 in the SEC. That's probably the last time Lett will play in the top 6 of Clemson's line-up in a meaningful match in his career because of the better players behind him. Lett really was the 9th best player on this team. Dudley,Sala and Kennedy would have got more games vs Roberts although all would have lost.
