Pro's Pro Red Devil review

It's been about 2 weeks since I first strung up my racquets with the red stuff and I have to say it doesn't really feel like Red Code. I would compare it to Kirschbaum super smash instead, except it is a lot more comfortable.

Stringing: Strung both racquets without any problems, weaving crosses was a breeze because of the very slick nature of the string. Notching during stringing was almost impossible because of how slippery the strings were, which was awesome. The one thing that irks me was how much the strings pulled after pulling tension, at 60lbs I had to re-tension it about 3 times before it settled down. Other than that, it was very pleasant.

hrlffm.jpg

First day of play: Very unforgiving and lacking a bit of power, that was only about 30 minutes in before I started to get used to it. From there I started to really love this string! Groundstrokes were penetrating the court easily and I could control any shot, especially the slice backhand which I killed my opponents with. Volleys and other touch shots were amazing, very soft and I could feel every ball. Serves were okay, didn't really have any pluses compared to shaped polys or more powerful strings. Enjoyed the slice outwide.

Day 2-5:

169gpq1.jpg

Felt amazing after the initial tension loss which felt like I lost 3lbs in tension, which really helped. Nothing changed since the initial tension loss and everything was fine until I broke it on a framed shot at the top. 12 hours in, not a bad string wish I could have played it a little more but that's enough hours to come up with a conclusion.

Conclusion:
Stringing: 10/10
Groundstrokes: 8/10
Serves: 6/10
Volleys and touch shots: 8/10
Price: 10/10
Tension maintenance(12 hours): 8/10

Very good string for the price, I would suggest getting the 1.24mm(17g) string because the 1.19mm string is insane. At around $40 a reel this a great slick colored poly to play with.

Cool, thanks for the review. What racket did you use? How spin-friendly was the string?

Racquet used was a ProKennex 90 and the string is fairly spin friendly, not as much as you would get from a super spin oriented string like Tour Bite but it can hold it's ground in that department.

The string is actually quite nice. It's my kind of poly: comfortable, soft and with good spin (not exceptional). Tried on my Prince TT Graphite Mid a few months ago. Also plays very nice in hybrids with syngut. I compare it to Topspin CyberBlue but with more firmness.

Don't think you can really complain about this string, ive used it has a full bed and hybrid

Preferred it as a full bed. Its seems really soft and comfortable to hit.

Great String

Great String

Agreed its cheap, holds tension well, comfortable enough in a full bed, comes in a wicked color, and is a slippery poly which I really like.

how is red devil compared to signum pro poly plasma , babolat pro hurricane tour ?

power , comfort , feel ( crisp , spongy ... )

i now play with poly plasma 1.23 . i will finish a reel in 1 month and I tested Pro Hurricane Tour. I rate the Pro Hurricane Tour above the Poly Plasma but the Babolat is more expensive and a little harsh on the arm. I want to avoid any arm problems

I've played with all 3, I was a long user of Poly Plasma 1.23 (5 years), tried Pro Hurricane Tour briefly, and now I am using Pro's Pro Red Devil exclusively. My opinions:
Pro Hurricane Tour: stiffest of the 3, lowest power, crisp, not comfortable, good spin.
Signum Pro Poly Plasma: medium stiffness, decent power, somewhat crisp but muted feel, rather comfortable, most durable of the 3, best spin.
Pro's Pro Red Devil: very soft and arm friendly, pretty good power, very muted feel, good ball pocketing, very comfortable, least durable of the 3, good spin.

I switched from poly plasma to the red devil and couldn't be happier, it has better feel, way better ball pocketing, and arm friendly. Only downside is it doesn't last long, but I got my own string machine.

i might give this string a try later. Also, i have the same place where the string break with my Vendetta 1.20. does that makes us shankers?

It's strange, I have the opposite experience.

Strung a full-bed with it on a Mantis Pro 295 (98 sq inch head size) and hated stringing the last few crosses with it.

Strung at 21 Kg (or thereabouts) and the stringbed feels much tighter than that (comparing to say... 21 Kg on a 93" POG Mid) and harsh.

During play, it's ok confort-wise but has no power at all.

Still using it as cross for my natural gut mains, great feel. Red Devil has the best feel out of every poly I've used, power is pretty good but not great. Finished 1 reel, still has a reel left, going to order some more before the price increases. I think the key is to string it low, because I once strung this at 58 lb and it didn't feel too nice. But below 52 lb this string is just amazing.

I just switched over to Red Devil from Solinco Outlast. I haven't played Red Code so I can't comment on how close those are, but Red Devil and Outlast feel very similar to me, with Red Devil being just a touch softer. I had to tension a couple of times because of how stretchy the string is, but otherwise super easy to string, tie off. Overall (cost and performance), Red Devil is tough to beat.

Interesting, I never tried Solinco Outlast, but I've played with Tecnifibre Red Code, and Red Devil and Red Code play very similarly, with Red Code being a bit softer. Having used Red Devil, I've been wondering why Babolat/Luxilon polys cost so much, since they don't play better than $35 a reel polys :( In fact, I like the feel of Red Devil over almost any poly.

Just got my reel or Red Devil today and strung up a set. It stretches like a multifiber when stringing so i imagine it'll be a softer feel. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow. Oh, and I only ordered it Wednesday. Can't beat that kind of shipping.

Where did you all get the string?

there's an american distributor of the strings (he also has an account here). Google it or look through the Pro's Pro strings thread. As far as I can remember, the Pro's Pro distributor commented there. Shoot him a mail asking for details.

8 Month Review of Red Devil

This is my 8 months review of Pro's Pro Red Devil 1.24

I've tried this string in a full bed from 40-57 lbs. And for my racquet BLX Tour 90, I think 45-48 lbs range has the best feel. Nowadays, I use it mostly with Natural Gut in mains (used Wilson Natural Gut once, and bought a lot of Global Gut later for hybrid uses with Red Devil). In a hybrid, I string them mostly between 48/45 to 52/49 lb for best feel.
This string has a very soft and lively feel, but not overly powerful like Polystar Energy, nor is it muted like Tecnifibre Black Code, Yonex PTP, and SPPP. Its main features are good ball pocketing and comfortable feel. Because of good ball pocketing, I had good precision with it when placing the ball. The spin potential is pretty good, but not excellent like other polys (Solinco Tour Bite, SPPP). Compare to the string it was trying to copy, Tecnifibre Pro Red Code, the Red Devil is a tad softer and more powerful. For that reason I like the Red Devil more than Red Code. It's especially good when hybriding with natural gut mains, as I've used SPPP and Alu Power Rough as cross string for natural gut before and didn't like them as much as I liked Red Devil.

Other than Wilson BLX Tour 90, I've also used the Red Devil in Pro Staff 85 and Head Graphene Speed Pro with good results. On Head Prestige Mid though, the string didn't sing like it did on other racquets, probably because it's such a low powered racquet and with the tight string pattern, an 18 gauge string maybe better.

Downside is the tension maintenance. The tension is gone after ~8 hours most of the time in a full bed, and in hybrid with Global Gut the tension is gone after ~10 hours. It will still keep going, but the soft and comfortable feel is gone after that.

Recommendations: absolutely a must try string if you got a string machine and you like soft/powerful/comfortable string. For the price I paid ~$32/reel shipping included, you really can't go wrong with it. I bought from Pro's Pro UK distributor.

Happy hitting

How is the Red Devil 1.19 working for ya ? I normally use 1.24 because I am afraid playing with 1.19 will lose a lot of control that 1.24 provides.

I'm using it (Red Devil 1.19) with NG mains (currently it's crossed with Klip Legend 17) and so far so good. Comfortable with plenty of power and feel, IMO......Only hit with for about 4-5 sets. Only other Poly I've used in NG hybrid so far has been Co-focus 1.18 (with natualgutwholsale 16g natural). They feel somewhat similar to me. I've never been super picky about strings, but normally us/used full bed syngut/multi/NG.

I pulled the crosses twice, letting it sit for ~20 seconds on first pull before re-pulling. It has lots of stretch for a poly, IME. I don't (haven't in the past) used/strung lots of poly but it has always been 17g and much less stretchy (usually Pro Line 2 17g for friends/clients as well as some other cheap poly's, Polylon SP, etc).

What racquet do you play with. I can't imagine 17 guage gut w/ 1.19 Red Devil lasting long in my racquet ?! I personally use 16 gauge Global Gut w/ Red Devil 1.24mm.

It's a new setup so not sure about the longevity yet. But I like how it plays/feels/comfort.

glad you like your setup.

Has anyone tried Red Devil as a cross in a shaped poly main/smooth poly cross hybrid? Specifically thinking of trying it as a cross with TB in a 16x19 frame.

not a good idea IMO. You want to have the softer strings in the mains, as the softer string notches in a hybrid and it string moves better along the stiffer string than vice versa. Red Devil is pretty much the softest polyester string you can find and Tour Bite is quite stiff. You'll be losing a lot of spin with that setup.

Makes sense. However, I think TB 18 is actually quite soft for a poly. According to TWU data it is at 162 lb/in. Is there any data for Red Devil a la TWU stiffness rating?

I strung up some Pro's Pro Blackout (Tecnifibre Black Code copy) and Red Devil in cross in my Head Graphene Speed Pro, it's not working so well lol. I am not sure if the racquet is too stiff, or is the main string too muted :(

I hate black code as a mains string to be honest. Too muted and low powered.

TB will still be "harder"/more dense IMO. Also, using a thin and shaped string will saw through the softer string in the hybrid quicker than pretty much anything else. I don't think the setup would play well. Give it a try, what can I say.

Unfortunately, there is no data for Red Devil. However, many people say that its one of the softest polys they have played with. I would only use Red Devil in the crosses with a soft multifilament or gut in the mains.

Yeah Black Code (Blackout) has a love or hate feel, some people love the muted feel of that string (a lot of my string customers) and the string is very popular among poly users. And some others (like you, or me) hate that muted feel.

I have used Red Devil extensively, and I did a long review on this thread. It's very soft, but not overpowered. I've been using 1.24mm extensively. It goes very well as cross for natural gut, even better than SPPP, and way better than Luxilon Alu Power IMO. Because softer polys compliment the natural gut's feel, instead of making it feel too boardy.

Interesting comments yanster. I am just waiting on my global gut to arrive, already have the red code 1.24. What level do you play at? Any recommendations for GG/RD hybrid? My current setup is APR/OGSM at 54 indoors, APR with 15g smooth poly cross at 54, switching to 52lbs with that setup for out doors, but keen to try gut hybrid. I play Blade 98 18x20 stock mostly, and also have a couple Blade98S that I've been trying out last little while. 5.0 level.

I play at 4.5/5.0 level, moderate spin on both wings, 1hbh. I've been using Global Gut/Red Devil 1.24 for nearly a year now (9 months), string it between 48/45 lb and 52/49 lb. The feel of the combo is very good on my BLX90 Tour. If I were to string it on a Blade98, I would string it at 51/49 lb because tighter string pattern produces less power, so maybe a little higher for you since you prefer higher tension.
My concern is since Global Gut is a little bit shorter, I had difficulty stringing it on a 18x20 string pattern (Head Graphene Speed Pro). I don't know if it will be long enough for the 18 mains on that Blade 98 ?
It will be a lot softer than your Alu Rough/OG Sheep combo for sure, a lot of power.

I have Red Devil 1.19, do you think it would be good in an APD or PD to soften it up? I'm not really a string breaker. What poundage would you recommend for these racquets?

Yeah Red Devil 1.19 is quite soft, maybe I suggest 50-54 lb on APD/PD ?

Been using Red Devil in my Graphene Prestige MP at 52lbs in 1.24mm for the last two weeks. I'm a coach so have been using it almost everyday. Love the spin potential and soft feel. Was expecting it to have snapped by now so very impressed with the durability. Got Dunlop Black Widow in my other identical frame at the same tension and thickness and definitely prefer the Red Devil. Also looks slick with the Graphene Prestige paint job.

Fantastic recommendation. Love the setup on Blade 98 18x20. A lot more power, but so much more feel and control. String bed still playing well at around 4-5 hours. What tension would you recommend for GG/RD on Blade 98S (18x16)? Can't seem to keep string on the frame for longer than 3-4 hours. Best setup so far is Blackshark / SPPP at 52lbs.

Well the 98S does chew through strings very fast ! I recently strung Global Gut/Red Devil on my Prestige Midplus @ 53/50 lb and it feels great for me.

Thanks for the recommend! I tried 53/50 last night but it was rocket launcher on the 98S, way too soft of a bed for me unfortunately. Instead of cutting out the gut, I've just put in lux 4g @ 52 to firm up the bed and lose some power.

Will have to try the GG/RD combo at a higher tension next time! Maybe 55/52?

how badly were you overfiring? You usually have a feel for how much higher tension is needed based on that (and it is something we cannot judge).

Hey SpinToWin,
It was match play, so I didn't really keep hitting out the same, to find out how much id be overfiring. I ended up putting a lot more margin on the ball. The major challenge was adjusting to how long the ball was sitting on strings.

Compared to blackshark/SPPP at 52lbs on the 98S, the GG/RD at 53/50 felt maybe 20% softer and 20% more powerful? Compared to GG/RD at 51/49 on the Blade 98 18x20 ball feels like it hangs on strings 20% longer?

I think I'll see how this GG/4G at 53/52 plays on the 98S. My guess for next time will be to try GG/RD at 55/52, or GG/ALU at 54/50 or GG/4G at 54/50 98S?

First outing with Red Devil 1.24 yesterday and it held up like a champ! Strung fb 56/52 in Prince O3W. Easy stringing. Super elastic. Little coil memory. Reminds me of Discho Iontec yet softer. Comfort √, Control √, Spin √ in that order and its has controlled power. Not low powered like a first gen poly but enough to pop a winner when the opportunity presents itself. I probably put in 4 hours yesterday on and off with the string and hit with two big college hitters and my DT reading went from 47 off the machine to 39 when I got home. So the real downside looks to be the tension maintenance. With that said though I was still finding excellent depth control even towards the end of the day. So for what I want out of a fb of poly Red Devil 1.24 was a very pleasant surprise! Some pre stretching will help with tension maintenace but other than that this is my best price/performance string to date.

Not sure, but it's gonna lose a lot of tension so start out accordingly.
I'll kindly disagree - Red Devil doesn't lose tension in some extraordinary way. It stretches a lot during the stringing. These are different things. After it's strung, behaves itself quite ordinary for a soft poly, even better in comparison to some more expensive others.

I find it to hold tension pretty well, but he was talking about 1.14 (18g), so I'd assume it would want to stretch abit more than normal. I use the 1.19 (17L) for what it's worth and I've gone to keeping it in until my natural gut mains break.

I also pull mine twice, letting it sit for 10 seconds or so on the first pull before re-pulling to give it a sort of "pre-stretch", if you will.

I'll soon have a WISE tension head so I will likely use the prestretch function.
