How would you define this term "pigeon"

What are your criteria for a player to be a "pigeon" for another player and (controversial) would you say Murray and Federer are pigeons of Nadal?

No Murray and Fed are not pigeons of Nadal. That is incorrect usage of the term.

Berdych and Ferrer are pigeons of Nadal. i.e. players who often do not try their best vs particular opponent and give them free pass, instead of playing hard and fighting for the win.

My interpretation of it is someone who can be controlled and tamed into doing what they want, like a pigeon. Sprinkle some bread on the floor as bait to lure it in then pounce on it before it realises what has happened. Or in Tennis terms, draw them into a baseline rally and then come up with a winner out of nowhere to win the point.

I think we use the term a little too easily in tennis sometimes but there are matchups that really stress the point of someone having no idea what to do against a superior player. Thus, they are a pigeon of his.

Berdych and Ferrer are also pigeons of Djokovic.
Funny you mention Ferrer who beat Nadal 2 times recently on hardcourt and clay, while he didn't beat Djokovic for ages.

The double standards of Chico, nothing new

No they are not. They always give 110% vs Djokovic, but barely 50% or even give up and retire (Berdych) vs NAdal.

That is the difference of Pigeon vs Non Pigeon.

You are both misusing the word. A pigeon is not someone who losses most of the time to one player, but one who gives up before stepping on the court or intentionally doesn't play hard vs particular player.
Two quite different things.

EXACTLY!
Can you believe this guy?! Just because HE says so, Ferrer & Berdych are Rafa's pigeons even though Ferrer has beaten Rafa a couple of times very recently, and Berdych took Rafa to the 3rd set at WTF.
Whereas the same players who haven't been able to beat Djoko, give their best against him?!

This guy is getting more & more ridiculous by the minute. The trolling & inciting is off the charts! When will the mods see through his posts?!

But he still tries his best.
Does not lay down roll over and surrender or intentionally lose or retire like Berdych.

Berdych has given djokovic a fight in their last 3 matches. Beat djokovic in rome, 7-6 6-4 6-3 win for djokovic at Wimbledon last year and davis cup was also a tough match for djokovic 6-4 7-6 6-2. Yes I know the scoreline is one sided but if you watched the matches you would know it was not easy at all.

WTF are you talking about. Berdych is Nadal's pigeon. Not Djokovic's. He always plays more than hard and gives 120% vs Djokovic. Vs Nadal he just rolls over. So I don't get your point.

Also once more. I beg you don't fall into their trap.

Apologises my dear chico!! :)

so why did you mention Ferrer for Nadal ? Ferrer is not his pigeon.

Berdych for Nadal = Tsonga for Djokovic, that's it.

Tsonga does not send love, adoring and worshiping messages to Novak over twitter.

Tsonga plays hard vs Djokovic - RG 2012 for example.
Berdych is happy to hand a match to Nadal on a silver platter every time.

Quite different.

Ferrer beats Nadal only when Nadal decides to tank. i.e. has no chance of winning a slam (USO 2007, AO 2011), or on not important tournaments where Nadal wants to preserve energy (Bercy)

As said. You misuse a word "pigeon" here.

indian wells 2013. A joke of a match against djokovic. Shanghai 2013 Close to a joke. Roland garros 2014 I wont even talk about that. Ok Wimbledon 2014 he put up a pretty good fight but 3 out of the last 4 have been pathetic performances against a player djokovics calibre

Only because Djokovic was that much better than Tsonga, who was in bad shape and form. Tsonga did try his best on the day to beat Novak. Go back and watch their RG match this year. It was all brilliance of Djokovic, not that Tsonga didn't try. He did try but Novak was just that much better.

Berdych on the other hand...

Of course. Djokovic was brilliant, but IMO that's not the attitude to play Novak Djokovic. For me he looks like he doesn't believe he has any chance whatsoever

There is no difference to any reasonable poster. I honestly believe that you are not trolling and that you truly believe that the above is true...but your extreme bias for Djokovic clouds your ability to see the truth once again.

I define a pidgeon as someone who is perfectly capable of beating another player - usually someone higher in the rankings than he or she - but still loses most of the time, likely because of some self-imposed form of respect or a mental block.

He literally cannot ever be wrong. I think the opposite of you. I often think he HAS to be trolling because nobody can be that biased and not be aware of it.

I think he is just dense and doesn't realize that his bias for Djokovic is about as strong as anyone's bias for any player. On other topics besides Djokovic and Nadal, he is reasonable.

Sad to say it, but Hewitt and Roddick were Federer's pigeons.

Is this the new "Nadal only loses when he's injured" thing?

"Nadal only wins cause players don't try against him"?
