Pacific NXS

After the Tecnifibre play test, I decided to try another. I love Pacific's strings and they have a high end multi, NXS. It comes in a 16L and possibly the single coolest color ever, Iguana. I obtained a couple of sets and herein lie my test results.

Initial Comparison with Tecnifibre

The TF string was a 16 and I commented at the time it felt thicker. Pacific NXS is listed as a 16L (1.29) and as with all Pacific strings, to me it felt a touch thinner. Stringing, while the TF string was like yarn, NXS has more consistency. It by no means has a ton of coil memory, but it is more substantive. Both were a pleasure to string.

I will update this thread once I play with it.

This string is better than the TF test string, IMO. I found it to play firmer yet still retain really good comfort. The string bed was nice and crisp, but pocketing and comfort were really nice, especially for the first time out. It definitely isn't mushy like the old TF 515 and NRG after a few outings. This string is very very predictable and not jumpy at all.

This string's best quality is its control. I thought it had considerably better control at tension than the TF string. From all areas of the court, I was able to put the ball where I wanted it. The control was way better than I remember having with an older generation multi.

Touch was also outstanding with this string. Around the net, I was hitting some really nice angles and put aways. The string bed really lent itself to building confidence that the ball was going where you wanted it to go.

Spin generation was better as well. The string really had more bite as evidenced by the amount of fuzz on the string after we played.

We'll see how it holds up durability-wise, but right now I am much more impressed with this string than the TF string, which I liked. Thanks to Max Ply for piquing my interest in high end multis. If this string continues to perform, it may well be my new go to string.

Thanks for the update on this string, Rabbit. I was looking for a good multi to use and also one to put with a gut hybrid. This might be one I will try out. Please keep us posted for any updates on this string. Though at $25 a set it will have to be a REALLY great string. If not you might as well just keep using Pacific Classic gut.

Speaking of which, have you played with Pacific's Premium Power X -- their $20.00 solid core synthetic? Another is the long list of great strings from Pacific. If so, comparison to NXS would be welcome.

This string is really nice. I much prefer it over the TF string. Durability is fantastic, feel remains a strong point along with comfort and control. Control, IMO, is more an attribute than power with this string.

After two weeks and about 10 matches, NXS is holding up amazingly well. The only real change, which mimics natural gut, is the improvement in pocketing and feel. It thus far just keeps getting better and better. Notching is minimal.

I haven't tried the Premium Power X but it is on my list now. I am so impressed with NXS that I may put down natural gut in favor of this string, it's that good!

I just ordered two sets of the NXS -- thanks again for the review on this. Never knew it existed. Well, my wallet may not be as enthusiastic. However, I have never found Pacific to under-deliver in any way. Ever.

Yeah, I agree. The recent thread I did on natural gut just reinforced that notion. I tried most everything and came back to what I already knew!

The TF play test did lead me to try the NXS and that was definitely a great thing. I swear that string is as close to gut as anything I've ever hit with. And I've played twice more and it's still not notched and playing great. It is also remains firm yet comfortable.

String one up, if you don't like it, send me an email and I'll buy the other one from you!

Thanks, but I am sure it will not come to that. Same goes if you hate the Premium Power X.

Hello, anything new on your testing, I have tried your gut /nrg2 combo and it
does play great on my becker /volkl 18/20 pattern frames ,as good as or better than full gut . What is your thoughts on pacific nxs as a cross with gut,sounds like it plays pretty good in a full bed , always looking for something
special , anybody else testing with nxs ??

that's not a bad idea! I'll give it a whirl when next I restring. I suspect it would do fine as a cross.

Glad you like the gut/nrg combo. I really like it as well. I bought a couple of reels of NRG 17 at a heavy discount at a local salvage store, so I'm using them up. I do also think that natural gut mains and multi crosses seem to last longer than straight gut.

I will be stringing NXS pretty soon (there is still life in the Premium Power). Did you string at your usual tension, and would you recommend any adjustments to normal multi tension?

Normal tension was perfect

Nice review, thanks! I'll have to give NXS a try as I agree that Pacific strings are top quality. As others have said, the price tag is high.... but if the strings hold tension and don't break too quickly - while providing those results - they might be worth it!

Hybrid with Poly

I used to play with multifilament and gut string for a long time but it has been a while and in the last few years transitioned to full poly for the most part with some hybrids. I have played with multis from all of the major producers, including Pacific, and decided that overall, Tecnifibre was the best of the best and have pretty much only used NRG2 and X-One since then. I am currently playing with the Six.One 95 16x18 and Six.One 95S. The Six.One 95 is much closer to what I prefer in a racquet spec wise, and for feel, power and control. I am trying the Six.One 95S because it is in the Six.One line and not totally dissimilar from the regular Six.One 95 but lighter and more spin oriented with less control on heavy shots.

I am currently using a full bed of ALU Power in the Six.One 95 at 52 lbs for the Summer months in Ohio. I love a full bed of ALU Power in this frame but I know that it will play well in a hybrid setup as well. Because I have several packs of NRG2 and X-One in various gauges, I will probably start there first but I am very curious about this new NXS string. It looks like you play gut multi hybrids exclusively but do you think it would hybrid well with poly? I generally do not get more than 10-12 hours out of a set of full poly before I want to cut it out, sometimes as little as six hours if hitting against strong players. I am more interested in playability than something that will last for 50 hours.

No it's different. I thought TW had it, but if they don't it can be found.

@Rabbit I'm wondering, since nobody else chimed in about this strings, do you uphold it played as good as in your initial feedback or was it a "honeymoon" experience sort of thing?
Disclaimer: I'm simply curious because I wouldn't buy any multi at such a horrific price - as far as I can see it's still being sold but it's even more expensive than TF X-One!

@Automatix well it's been a while. I can say that I think there are other multis for less $ that play as well or maybe even better now. I've strung up some Head Velocity after reading the glowing reviews of the string. I can let you know after I hit with it some.
