The Ernests' Earnest Journey Towards Elitism!

Saw them live at The Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park with the London Symphony Orchestra. Total trip of an evening, sitting front row for that!

Wow...front row!

I've seen them three times, unfortunately after Trower left the band and BJ died. Did see Trower a few times with his trio. My big bro turned me on the them when I was 14, and he got to see them with Trower and BJ. I hope they make the Hall of Fame next year!

Well, he did do well on the grass courts of Boodles, even after being chased by women too old to be called cougars, so I think he will be OK.

WOW< am i genius or am i genius ? i predicted Ernie would NOT do well on Grass and he is not doing well against Stako.................:)

Gulbis has to change coach, who obviously didnt tell him to just block returns back and deep and not to play bouncy balls on grass!!!

I think Gulbis has a great summer on the hard courts ahead of him, Wimbly was never going to amount to much.

Bad draw for Gulbis. Anyone would have struggled against Stakhovsky today. Top 4 included.

Really? Did Stak look that good or did Gulbis just try to assume his way to a win?

Is it possible that Ernie needs to hire some of those "vampires" to help him get mentally prepared for every single match on the grind that is the tour?!

I'll first say that I didn't see any of the match, but I did hear one of the analysts on ESPN (can't remember who) say that Gulbis had "one of those days." Take from that what you will.

LOL, thanks, I will assume from this that many racquets were sacrificed to the vampire gods.

I was going to say that this shouldn't surprise us, how long was Gulbis' form going to last, this is simply Gulbis' typical "great performance followed by mediocre performance" character.

But, Stakhovsky on grass is no joke, so it's really not a bad loss at all, even if the result (2nd round exit) looks bad on paper.

Watched the match, he had an uninspired performance.

Perhaps he still only wants to play the big guys, can't be bothered with someone who's not ranked high and it shows.

Anyway, poor movement on the grass, poor shot decisions. Just wasn't there. Glad grasscourt season is a short one. ;)

he just doesnt seem very comfortable on the grass.

I think he will have a good summer though, if his mind and game stay as it was before grass season.

he played crap: Even 50% of backhands went long and that is to say. Stakhovsky was in total control, Gulbis screwed every possible shot. I noticed that Gulbis cant take on low bouncing balls.

And his serve is maybe strong, but bad placement resulted in that Stakhovsky just blocked it back right under Ernests legs and you know the result.

Yahoo sez he had right shoulder and back pain that contributed to his nine double faults, but I think the vampires just sucked the life out of him. :(

Considering the way Stakhovsky played to beat Fed last year, not that surprised that he beat Gulbis comfortably.

On grass the ball comes on much quicker....... those are going to be hard to hit with that penguin forehand of his ...you know where he spreads his arms and looks like hes about to flap his wings and fly away :D

Yes, I agree.

They look much better than Gulbis tennis.

Definitely worth some extra practice with no strings attached...

Still, maybe some TT statisticians can tell us whether there are many threads with so many posts about players with so little tennis merit?

I watched most of it. Gulbis looked fine for the first set and a half, but simply didn't have a game plan to counter Stakhovsky rushing him all the time. Stak was excellent at the net and went there at every possible opportunity.
Gulbis serve percentage was a bit low and he didn't have many looks in Stak's service games -> first BP was late in the third.
But the Stak of today would have troubled most players, including the big 4.

Staks averaged 1 lost point on serve per game and had single digit UEs. That's top shelf stuff!

It's disappointing the Philosopher King must step down in the middle of his lecture but I will listen intently for further musings from him this summer!

Gulbis seems to hate playing net rushers. Didn't Lopez also crush him in Queens last week?

No...he canoodled at the Boodles instead.

Oh yeah...forgot he lost in the 1st round to some dude named Kenny. Another loss down the rabbit hole.

Heh....I'm female and I think they are too long in the tooth to be cougars, but if you show up at the Boodles next year with a bottle of champagne, you'll probably get lucky.

The Vampires misunderstanding.. while I enjoy Gulbis' free wheeling attitude as anyone here, the reality is that most of the other ATP players don't have the luxury of not having to be sponsored because money is a non factor. Who can say money is really a non factor? Gulbis - sure. Who else on the tour comes from big money that they can say whatever they want and not give a f*ck about losing sponsors and revenue? Okay there probably are those who fall in the grey area there, but surely the money thing with Gulbis is a factor why he's in position to speak unrestricted.

they look to be around 40-45 max is that old?

I dunno, is it? A seven year old would think so, but a seventy year old would not.

Judging on just the Gulbis grope pic, I'd put them at high 40s to low 50s, but that's just a guess; I'd need a forensic team to be sure. Maybe they drink too much (cough cough) or have 12 kids or don't use sunblock and are actually in their 30s.

Ether way, if you find them attractive, go for it! They're probably already married to some rich guy in his 90s, but I think it would be easy to work around that.

Excellent point. The top players have plenty of money, too, but they also have huge entourages and have to worry about protecting their "brand." Ernie's comments are a breath of fresh air, at least when they are coherent.

Not much activity lately on the Gulbis front, but he's back in action at Toronto! He won his first round match vs Joao Sousa 6-3 6-4. Toronto does not seem to have a great deal of love for Gulbis though. His 2nd match vs Benneteau, is again not scheduled on a show court.

He is defending quarter final points in Toronto.

I would say that I think he'll lose to Raonic again, this time in the 3rd round, but I have a feeling he'll lose to Benneteau today.

Losing today would be quite bad. Raonic will certainly be though. Roanic will be the slight favorite for me. However he has been playing a lot of tennis the last 1 1/2 week and therefore might not be at his very best.

If Gulbis can win vs Raonic, Berdych is probably waiting in the quarter final.

Bennie a serving god or is Ernie gifting on return games? He's won two points in 5 return games???

Benneteau wins the 1st set tiebreak 7-4. I don't know, I just had a feeling this would happen. It's not just because of Gulbis being unpredictable, though. It's also that Benneteau also looked really good against Hewitt.
