Welcome to the 3rd event of the 2015 ATP Sudden Death League season: Claro Rio Open

Rules of the game:

1. Every day of the tournament that day's OOP will be posted. You pick one player who you think is going to win. It's a knock out-system: if the player you picked wins, you're through to the next round. If he loses, you're out.

2. You have to pick one player per round.

3. You can pick a player only ONCE. Obviously it's important to make smart choices in order to get far. If you have no picks remaining, you're eliminated from the competition.

4. You can't pick a player from a match that has started already.

5. NEW RULE - You cannot advance to the next round via a walkover since it is hard to know exactly when someone announced they were pulling out HOWEVER this rule does not apply once you reach the semifinals

6. Since you can no longer win a match by a walkover it is highly advised that you make a back-up pick to your main pick - when listing your picks make sure you specify which is your back-up.

7. If the player you picked retires during the match, you're out. If he retires before the match, your back-up pick will be used.

8. NEVER edit your pick. If you want to change your pick, please quote your old pick and choose a new player. Edited posts will not be taken into consideration.

SCORE FOR THIS TOURNAMENT
1 correct pick: 45
2 correct picks: 90
3 correct picks: 180
4 correct picks: 300
Winner: 500

What do you think the rule should be if the opponent of your pick pulls out before the match and is replaced by a LL - should we make that match void to choose from since it'd be a last minute change and therefore your back-up pick would come into play or should your original pick stand regardless of the opponent?

Like a little feedback from the group on which way to go - I'm thinking it'd make more sense to make the match void since that may change the dynamics of the matchup.

I think the original pick should stand. People are going to be annoyed either way if they end up getting burned, but I think it would be significantly more frustrating to have my primary voided, especially if he ends up beating the LL and the backup loses. I think the possibility of an opponent's withdrawal is simply another element of chance that we have to either accept or take into consideration when making our picks. I feel like 9/10, I'd want to stick to with my primary pick anyway. What would happen in the event that the backup had already lost? If the original pick were voided, you'd be eliminated (or there'd need to be another contingency plan to support this contingency plan).

Just my two cents.

Although, I suppose this change would be consistent with the new rule where you cannot win by a walkover. In that case (for later rounds), an opponent's withdrawal voids your primary, so this would be along the same lines, in the sense that an opponent's withdrawal voids a pick. I don't like the no walkover rule, so maybe that's why this one rubs me the wrong way as well, but I feel that in the event my primary pick plays, the pick shouldn't be voided.

I'd probably go with having the original pick stand as a default, unless of course the poster explicitly requests otherwise. Due to the very nature of being a LL, it's logical to assume that in the vast majority of cases a LL will be an equal or lower-quality player than the original opponent of the pick. Therefore, it seems logical to assume that a poster's confidence in their pick to win would usually be the same or higher if they face a LL instead of their original opponent.

In like Pablo Cruise, "When I go to Rio..."

A win vs a LL sub should stand. It's not a walkover, which the new rule was adopted for.

In for my first clay tournament of the year.

Primary pick vs LL sounds good to me unless the posters changes his pick.

Agree with this logic. I understand rationale behind new rule regarding walk overs was implemented because it's difficult to determine when a player withdrew - that is not applicable here as a primary pick still has a match to win.

It is a tough opening round. The specialists are out in full force. Funny, given the current topic of discussion, because Leonardo Mayer is a pick a lot of us would not like against a clay-court specialist LL. It's a pick based purely on the matchup. Still, I'll eat that sword when it comes and stand by my assertion that the pick should not be voided.
