Federer/Nadal doubles team - thoughts?

My thought is Fed's game obviously translates practically 100% to doubles, but Nadal's doesn't (serve and passing shots definitely, but I dunno about anything else). Doesn't seem like he poaches much if at all, and it doesn't feel like he's aggressive enough.

dream team!
but seemed like nadal was lost positionally, didn't s&v, didn't poach as much, etc,...

I thought Fed played pretty poorly, especially at net. His serving wasn't anything to brag about either. Rafa was much better at net and better overall, seemed like he had an abundance of energy and Roger was just flat. It was really fun to watch! Nadal plays more doubles than Roger and seemed more comfortable, even on a court which doesn't favor him. Rafa seemed to really enjoy it, his body language and enthusiasm were great to see.

I have said the last few years, when both are ready to retire they need to just be allowed to compete in doubles at events they choose. Good for the fans, still good competition, and good $$$ for the ATP.

Nadal is certainly the more accomplished dubs players, but I think he wasn't exactly sure between the two of them where to apply himself or position. Still...so awesome to watch.

Interesting to watch. Main takeaways;

Nadal is much better at the net than Federer (who missed a lot of sitters and easy putaways). And a better volleyer. Nadal is so clinical at net. You almost never expect him to miss or not get a shot over.

If they played together a few more times to get each other's rhythms, they'd probably be unbeatable as a doubles pairing.

They weren't great, but who cares? That was awesome to see, and they clearly enjoyed the hell out of it, and the crowd seemed to also. It was a moment, and I'm glad it happened. They're both long past their best, and playing at the end of a season where they've picked up a pair of slams apiece, nobody can have expected much more than we got.

They were actually decent tbf. Looked like there's a lot of potential for them to be even better with more practice.

Would like to see them together again maybe at a masters. I feel they can do damage.

And more importantly, both of them wanted to play alongside each other.

It is funny isnt it ?? They are long past their best but still the only real rival they still have is inform Djokovic.

Fedal was fun to see!

Loved Fed’s nerd emoji as he contemplated being excited to play w Rafa:

And more nice stuff on Fed’s twitter. As well as Nad's.
Obviously - they had a blast.

The Bromance is good for humanity and such a needed call for sports after McGregor/Mayweather.

(And good for this forum.)

This match is proof that Rafa is more gifted at the net than Roger. Not a popular idea but thats what it is ı am afraid.

You judge their volleying skills based on one match in a meaningless exo when Federer is 36 years old? Try watching young Fed volley against Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001 and you will change your mind in about .00000001 seconds. Or watch old Fed at 2015 Cincy beat peak Djoker by SABR-ing him and volleying him to death.

Its kind of funny-sad to see folks on here focusing intensely on who was better "Rafa or Fed" on the one day we have a chance to see them together and not competing.

We are slaves.
They are free.

That’s because they’re pressed and live vicariously through Roger and Rafa. I don’t like Nadal the player as a Fed fan but even I can see their friends and enjoy each other’s company.

Nadal is the main reason they won this match. Fed was absolutely horrifyingly bad. It seems that he didn't practice playing doubles much at all. Nadal on the other hand knew exactly what he was doing at the net.

This was nice to see [emoji4]

I don't see how this tournament has much of a future once Fedal retire. I can't see the top pros committing to it if they don't even commit fully to a much more historical and prestigious Davis Cup.

Maybe Fedal will come back to coach / host? But you may be right.

Would be nice to see some of the team World guys develop into top 5 players and make it more of a competition.

Rogie’s serving is affected after back injury , and I think he’s losing sharpness at net with age .. He even stated that Rafa will have to carry him in the match and I think that’s what we saw ..

Also jack sock’s net play needs a mention .. he really played some good volleys .. good to see that

Horrifyingly bad, lol. Talk about hyperbole. Buddy, you need to get a life. Every post I see you make is about your sour grapes that Federer has surpassed your hero Sampras. It's old news already and you won't change their records by b*tching about it so stfu.

We had two legends of the game playing doubles together and both of them were fabulous. What's to b*tch about? It was entertaining as heck.
