Matches where you've supported somebody else over your favourite?

Why exactly did you support Roddick in this match? I don't get it. I think that was Nadal's best chance to win a title in Miami. He wasn't going to lose to Berdych in the final.

Because Roddick is my 1st favourite player and also because of him I started watching tennis. But even when Nadal is playing Dimitrov, I always support Nadal. It's just that in this particular match I cheered a little bit more for Andy.

I became a Nadal fan in early 2010.

Well I guess you didn’t support someone over your favourite then!

Was happy when Delpo won the 2009 USO, Fed had won enough that year, had his comeback and completed the career slam. And I always liked Delpo's game.
Davydenko beating Roger the very same year at the WTF was one of those cases as well.

I've never supported anyone over Federer since 2003. I did support Agassi in his matches against Roger prior to that. The only time I wasn't especially disappointed in a Fed loss was the 2012 Olympics singles match. I don't care about the Olympics and wasn't sad to have Andy win that one.

Your comments are a bit confusing. You said Roddick was your first favorite player and you became a Nadal fan in early 2010 (basically around the same time this match was played). So my question is did you abandon Roddick sometime before 2010? If yes, how does that happen? If not, you were probably still a Roddick fan during that Miami match in 2010 although you were slowly moving towards Rafa. You don't just dump one player and join another without any reason. Also Nadal was not a new player, he was a seasoned pro by that time. If you are starting to favor a new player it's somewhat understandable, but Roddick and Nadal were almost contemporaries, Roddick won his slam in 2003, Nadal 2005; not a huge difference.

I don't think Berdych would have been a cakewalk. Nadal was just playing average tennis at that time and Berdych was in form. Nadal didn't reagain his top form until the clay swing of 2010. His form from RG 2009 to Miami 2010 was just average to below average.

Wimby 2009, I rooted for Arod.

lol seriously? I mean I can understand feeling sorry for Roddick after the match or being in a state that you would have been okay had Roddick won that match but it's hard to believe that a Federer fan would root against him at a Wimbledon final. Like at what point did that happen? During the match or before?

I would have supported Andy too probably had Fed won the 2008 final.Otherwise, I didn't wanted to see Fed losing the 2nd Wimby Final in a row.

There's absolutely no way a Federer fan would root against him in a slam final, period. After the fact sympathies don't count. There is zero chance you would have rooted against Federer even if he had won the 2008 final. I also don't believe @NatF

The only Federer fan I believe here is @duaneeo His justification makes sense.

Yeah, I edited my message because I remembered that 2009 was Fed's only opportunity to win the Channel Slam.

I've never even supported my own countrymen over Fed. This ain't no football.

However the one and only time I didn't celebrate a big win was 2009 Wimbledon. Unless you're a psychopath you just had to feel sorry for Roddick.

I guess I’m a psychopath then!

Seriously Wimbledon 09 was a great win for Fed. He overtook Sampras in the slam count and became world No 1 again.

I can’t say I really felt sorry for Roddick either. I remember Fed being asked whether he felt sorry for dispensing Lorenzo or some other journey man in round 1 of Wimbledon. Lorenzo or whoever it was has not yet progressed past the first round of a grand slam despite being roughly Federer’s age. He replied not really, we all train hard, it is what it is. So I put it to you, why does Roddick deserve more sympathy than Lorenzo or for that matter Sureshs when he loses a box league 23 match?

Because Sureshs only loses as a mercy to his opponents.

During the match. Roddick was my second favourite at the time but by the end I was just really sad to see him lose. In hindsight the loss is even sadder lol.

I was a Roddick fan before I was a Federer fan. Anyway your belief isn't necessary.

Uhh W2009 final comes to mind, but it deserves an asterix as I gradually became more of a Fed fan over the years. In the earlier days it mostly depended on the situation and the match up who I was rooting for. Nowadays I'll always root for Fed. Maybe if a lower ranked player that I really like (Chung, Griekspoor) plays him in a relatively unimportant match.

Davis cup semi final in Glasgow a few years back. Sir Andy vs Lord Delpops of Argentina. I couldn’t help but support the tower of tandil, much to the annoyance of the jocks sat around me, and much to the embarrassment of wifey sat next to me.

Given that Delpo's victory enabled Argentina to win their first Davis Cup after several near misses, I was certainly able to live with that. Andy had already won DC for GB the previous year and already beaten Delpo in the Olympic final so it seemed a fair quid pro quo. Gotta give the 'Gentle Giant' something!

I'm more a fan of tennis than a particular player.

Federer is my favourite current player, but I wanted Dimi to win their match at the USO this year simply because Grigor was playing great tennis and I want to see him make a comeback and do more of that. When Millman had a sniff I wanted him to beat Roger too. John is from the same city as me and we sometimes see him on the practice courts. Seriously nice guy who works his arse off and deserves some home town support.

If Switzerland play Australia at the ATP Cup in a few months, I'll sledge the sh1t out of Roger until security tap me on the shoulder, even if he's playing Kyrgios (but I'd draw the line at Tomic).

By far the biggest problem with this discussion board is people who blindly support a player, rather than appreciate the game.

That doesn't mean you were supporting Roddick to beat Federer. Federer was going for the slam record, Sampras himself was present there which was extremely rare. I have a hard time believing that a Fed fan would support his opponent when so much was at stake. Yes we get that many people, including many Fed fans felt sorry for Roddick, who wouldn't given the circumstances? but that's different from supporting him during the match. It's most likely a "hindsight" thing.
