No Connors in this decade? I would place Jimmy above Cash, Kriek, Noah, Gomez and Teacher in the '80s, consider his two US Opens and he was always a force until the last couple of years of the '80s. Unless you are deliberately not repeating names in more than one period?

Career-wise, I place Edberg above Wilander and Becker, but I suppose if isolating the decade, Wilander places above (not convinced about Becker).

Edberg belongs in this decade as well. Unless again, it was intentional to not list anyone twice.

Edberg vs Becker

I know that people argue either way about Becker vs Edberg - but for myself I can't understand the reasons by anyone would put Edberg ahead of Becker.

Becker is wildly dominant in the head to head (25 to 10)

Becker has more titles

Becker has many more major indoor titles - 1 WCT + 3 Masters Cup + 1 Grand Slam Cup - vs just 1 Masters Cup for Edberg (and this is a fair comparison since basically they were both natural fast court players).

Becker has dominant Davis Cup record vs Edberg - Becker won all 3 of the matches they played - 2 of them in straight sets.

The only thing that I can think of is that Edberg beat Becker 2 finals vs 1 at Wimbledon - but Surely Beckers 3 vs 2 Wimbledons carries that vote (and 7 finals vs 3).

Despite the H2H, I think Edberg's overall career was better. He was much more consistent throughout his career. He had far more weeks at #1 (72 to Becker's 12).

In addition to his 6 major singles titles (2 AO, 2 Wimbledon, 2 USO), he had 3 major doubles titles (plus 2 more finals). Also one more major final in singles than Becker. He was actually just two points from a career grand slam when he nearly won the French Open - funny that had he done it, there would probably be no argument that he belongs ahead of both Wilander and Becker. Yet he was closer than either of them to the career slam.

He won the junior GS. He participated on more winning Davis Cup teams. He won bronze medals in both singles and doubles in the Olympics, plus won the gold medal in the '84 Olympics (as a demonstration sport that year).

I admit the trio of Edberg, Wilander and Becker are very close and many people argue their rankings. For career, I rank them Edberg, Wilander and then Becker. For the decade 1979-1989, I agree with Wilander on top, since all 7 of his majors were pre-1989.

Boris Becker has better carrer percentage than Edberg.Better at the masters Grand Slams,Davis Cup Head to Head etc.

Becker against top tenners 121 65
Edberg 97-114
Edbergs Carrer,
806 270 .749 42
Grand Slams 0 0 .000 178 47 .791 6
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 0 0 .000 108 42 .720 4

Becker,

713 214 .769 49
Grand Slams 0 0 .000 163 40 .803 6
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 0 0 .000 97 43 .693 5

He won 13 atp super 9s Edberg 7.

Being more weeks number 1 is not that relevant. If so Kuerten and Hewitt would be better than Becker.

Susan, you are right, I used a premise of not including a player in 2 decades, allowing other players to fit in.Of course, it is biassed, but is a criteria. If I didn´t follow it, then I´d certainly rank Jimmy in the top 10 of 1980.He and Borg would rank inmediately, IMO, behind Becker and would rank above Edberg. So Stefan would be nº 7, Cash nº8, Kriek nº9 and Noah nº 10.

Same for 2000´s, Sampras and Agassi would still be top tenners, even if way past their prime.

Boris vs Stefan is still one of the most dramatic, yet controversial rivalries. They played each other from the mid 80´s to mid 90´s and none seemed, career wise, to have a signifiant edge over the other. But, I agree with you, Becker was a little bit the better player ( although Edberg was nicer to watch IMO).In any case, I think Becker is not too well treated in these boards. He didn´t last longer at the very top but he is one of the very few players I have seen (Laver,Borg,Mac,Sampras,Fed or Hoad) that were unbeatable in those rare ocassions he reached his peak.

Peak Becker, wether you like it or not, is one of the best peaks ever.

Becker,Edberg and Wilander were a great trio, just sligth below Laver,Rosewall,Gonzales or Borg,Mc Enroe,Connors but a very good one.Possibly at the same level as Fed,Djokovic and Rafa

No argument there. Becker was one of the most exciting and entertaining players of that era. He was just wildly inconsistent, but certainly rarely boring.

at 30 or so, it would take the best ever Sampras to beat him IN 5 SETS, with 3 or 4 tie breakers on a fast indoor surface. This speaks so loud about Sampras stature.
