Australian Open director, Craig Tilley, said the tournament organisers had listened to feedback and were “excited to deliver a solution to minimise late finishes while continuing to provide a fair and equitable schedule ...

The additional day will achieve this, benefiting scheduling for fans and players alike. The first round will now be played over three days instead of two.

The day session at Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena will feature a minimum of two matches, down from three, to limit the potential of late finishes. The schedule will stay the same for night sessions – a minimum of two matches – and for John Cain Arena.

The tournament will now start on a Sunday, running from 14 to 28 January, with tickets going on sale next week on 12 October.

Of all the majors, the Australian Open is probably the one I associate the least with late finishes. But that may just be because my time zone is out of sync with them so I don't really notice it.

The AO did have a problem a while ago with late finishes, but they largely solved that. An extra day does mean extra attendance, so that would be the major consideration.

One extra day will not solve the problem of late finishes unless they start the night/evening matches an hour earlier, but unfortunately broadcasters won't agree with that schedule. RG with their new found roof has gone crazy with their regular 1am finishes.

A ****ing killing joke!
It took more than twenty years to schedule the semifinals on the same day and Tiley's two best mates have had the benefits of having playing all or almost all of the matches of the same edition in the night session, in addition to sometimes playing indoors when it was not necessary, the most obvious example being the 2018 final.

The first to 16 days would be revolutionary. That's three weekends!
Roland Garros has been played on three Sundays for more than a decade.
More than revolutionary, it would be even more profitable for Grand Slam events if this comes to fruition.

Hahahahha so now it's even less likely to see the "best" players when you fork over 100 dollars per ticket on Rod Laver.

Another great money making scheme boys *INSERT SCARFACE MONTAGE

The new Opening Sunday is going to be called "Djokovic Day"

Anyone who says they like Djokovic gets in free that day
