Australian rock band AC/DC is set to announce their retirement, media reports say.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told Melbourne radio station 3AW on Monday that the band many never perform or record again.

Perth radio 6PR says the split is the result of illness, amid speculation that Malcolm Young is unwell.

Ford later tweeted that more details on the split would emerge shortly.

Comment was being sought from the band.

AC/DC was formed by brothers Angus Young and his brother Malcolm , who migrated from Scotland to Sydney when they were children, in 1973.

For more than three decades the band has consistently performed at sold-out concerts across the globe.

One of the group's best-loved works is their successful and influential Back In Black album, which has sold in excess of 22 million copies in the US.

Late last year front man Brian Johnson said the band was gearing up to celebrate their 40th anniversary as a band with a new album and a world tour this year.

Johnson told DJ Andy Preston from the station that the band had been keeping a low profile of late because one member was unwell.

"One of our boys was pretty ill, so we didn't like to say anything," Johnson said.

"But I think we'll be going into the studio in May in Vancouver."

The singer added: "It's been 40 years of the band's existence, so I think we're gonna try to do 40 gigs, 40 shows, to thank the fans for their undying loyalty.

"I mean, honestly, our fans are just the best in the world, and we appreciate every one of them."

I really liked their songs "Stairway to Heaven" and "Dark Side of the Moon" and for that, these guys will be missed.

new reporting, doubting...

http://www.noise11.com/news/acdc-to-retire-speculation-started-on-rumour-20140415

“AC/DC To Retire” blurted headlines all over Australia today but the entire story is based on one anonymous rumour emailed to a Perth radio station.

The story started with an anonymous person using the name ‘Thunderstuck’ emailing Perth radio station 6PR with the rumour of the band’s retirement. The radio station reported the rumour prompting a flurry of activity across Australian media then reporting the rumour as fact without confirmation from anyone from the band.

The word was founding member Malcolm Young is seriously ill as was unable to continue with the band. That, according to ‘Thunderstuck’ meant the end of AC/DC and to Australian media quickly became fact and reported as news.

But lets think about that for one moment. In 1980 lead singer Bon Scott died. Four months later AC/DC released the Back In Black album with a new lead singer, Brian Johnson.

AC/DC continued then because, according to the band, it would have been Bon’s wish. Is it Malcolm’s wish that they break-up if he leaves?

While the Young brothers have been the one constant in AC/DC the band lists 13 names in its ex-members list.

AC/DC is not exactly a prolific group. In the past 22 years they have worked for 5. The band has been inactive since June, 2010 when they performed the last of their Black Ice shows.

The Black Ice tour grossed $441 million. AC/DC is a corporation. Regardless of the various members activity or lack of, the business will go on. The corporation does not stop when the band takes a break.

Rock writer Iain Shedden, who is known for having his finger on the pulse a bit more than ‘Thunderstuck of Perth’ wrote in The Australian after the media tsunami that AC/DC are still booked to go into the studio in Vancouver from May 1 for six weeks to work on their next album.

Right now, published stories of the break-up of AC/DC are based on unsubstantiated and unconfirmed speculation out of Perth. When official news is announced we will report the facts then.

Brian Johnson speaks...

AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson has told a British newspaper that rumors of the band’s impending breakup are only that.
"We are definitely getting together in May in Vancouver," Johnson told the U.K.'s Telegraph. "We're going to pick up some guitars, have a plonk, and see if anybody has got any tunes or ideas. If anything happens, we'll record it."
Reports that the long-running Australian rock band would be calling it quits revolved around news that guitarist Malcom Young, lead guitarist Angus Young’s older brother, is seriously ill.
In the interview with the Telegraph, Johnson did confirm that one of the band’s members has “a debilitating illness” that could affect how AC/DC moves forward.
"I wouldn't like to say anything either way about the future,” Johnson said. “I'm not ruling anything out. One of the boys has a debilitating illness, but I don't want to say too much about it. He is very proud and private, a wonderful chap. We've been pals for 35 years and I look up to him very much."
The band subsequently released a statement identifying that band member as Malcolm Young, 61.
"After forty years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health,” the statement said. “Malcolm would like to thank the group’s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support.”
Johnson also told the Telegraph, "AC/DC is such a tight family. We've stuck to our guns through the Eighties and Nineties when people were saying we should change our clothes and our style. But we didn't and people got it that we are the real deal.”
